I use ND filters on my cameras ALL THE TIME! They are ESPECIALLY important on action cameras like the DJI Osmo Action for cinematic footage and pro time-lapses! In this weeks video, we take a look at why you need ND filters for your action camera.
Thanks to PolarPro for sponsoring this video and for using magnets that I can't stop playing with.

This was a really good explanation of how ND filters can really change what you're shooting I liked it! For my right now I would use the heck out of the for timelapses myself and for the documentary I'm shooting. I'm shooting a doc about another person from my town who is rolling a 230 pound tire around that says "Cancer sucks" to raise awareness around cancer research, make connections with others in our community, and show a different way to get your workout on and stay fit. Sticking an action cam on his head with a ND filter to keep the light looking great while he rolls the tire would just take our project to the next level.

Hey man, thanks for another informative video. Just a question, is the camera still waterproof when using the ND filters? Feels like the magnetic connection would ruin it, unless it’s actually waterproof even w/o the protective lens all together.

I have Freewell ND filters and they do come in handy for the Osmo Action. Now if they could just fix the issues when shooting in 4k at 24 fps and 1/50th shutter speed. Man it can look horrible as it tries to implement Rock Steady at those settings. Nice time lapse!

So do you put the clear DJI cap back on, when you're not outside or do you just leave it off (unless you need the protection)? I suggest getting this geni.us/actioncambase and then you can screw on a normal baseplate or 1/4” tripod screw into the bottom. Then you can use it with a gorilla pod or regular tripod. I also use it with the suction cup (link is in the description). Hope that helps!

Hey guys, I am curious and cant seem to find an answer for this question. Most rules are for FF. So does the 180 degree rule adhere to apsc or does the crop factor need to be factored in. I ask this because when taking a rule for stills such as the reciprocal rule (min shutter is 1/focal length to prevent camera shake) the crop factor does need to be applied. Cheers
@dunnadidit

Hey! Crop factor doesn’t play in this situation. No matter the sensor size, the 180° shutter speed “rule” is still the same.

Hi Dunna! I just found this video...I want an action camera but not really for extreme sports...maybe some biking! but more for unique angles or sometimes for POV angles (using a headband attachment for example) and my "vintage" gopro hero 3 black is not cutting it anymore! Of course i have good cameras such as a Canon 90D or a sony a6400 but I want something really compact that is like a everyday camera-reliable, stable, no overheating (I won't record in 4k for hours! no but a few minutes at a time maybe) that i can use as a C camera etc...so I was thinking maybe the Osmo action (now with the latest firmware it has hyperlapse and the LCD screen lag has been improved I think) or the GoPro hero 8 (I don't care about the 7 at all)...I would like to get semi-cinematic shots that I can combine with footage from other cameras so dewarp or linear angles is a must and good stabilization. Another reviewer complained that the Osmo looks artificially oversharpened and that there is no setting to lower the sharpening intensity whereas the GoPro hero 8 has a setting to lower it...but some early reviews (hopefully only a few) of the hero 8 complain about overheating/lockups/corrupted files already...I was hoping the Hero 8 fixed the problems the 7 had (which I bought and returned last year)...what would you recommend? Just tell it like it is! Pls! thanks so much!
@dunnadidit
@dunnadidit 4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately I haven’t had the chance to use the hero 8 yet, but I returned the hero 7 almost immediately and I’m quite happy with the osmo action. All that said, I don’t use it much just because it doesn’t fit my style and workflow, but regardless, I think the osmo action would still be my choice!

@@dunnadidit hey hey...how is Edmonton is it? Thanks for sharing your knowledge man! I kept my a6400 and I got the 18-105mm f4 lens..totally worth it. I confess that I purchased the Canon 90D in a moment of weakness! but I also like it a lot...now I want to get a niche camera...I was set to get a gopro hero 8 new ($529 Cdn plus tax!) but there is a chance I could get a gently used Osmo Action here in Toronto for $400 flat...seems like a good option...I just dont want the "best" camera for now...until the next one gets released! @@dunnadidit BRRRR....no more one-wheelie ( or whatever that black wizardy thingy is called!) for you mister! I have enough trouble just crossing the street on foot! anyway... I don't expect either the Osmo or the GP 8 to compete with a DSLR but I would like a camera that I can have with me all times and get usable shots-from timelapses-day and night to some POV, to some general establishing shots-so it has to have linear mode so that I can use the footage in longer videos shot with DSLRs....both Osmo and GP8 do this-not the 7 (not in 4k at least) and a camera that is reliable and stable-no lockups/overheating etc...If I can get a Osmo "previously enjoyed" (aye caramba! English can be cute sometimes!) for much lower than a new Go PRo 8 I may go for that. I hope I won't be missing much or anything. Thanks and get ready for a great Canadian Winter!

You’re not the first person to mention that... why is that, something about the shutter speed?
@TaskForceMediaGroup
@TaskForceMediaGroup 5 жыл бұрын
Dunna Did It I believe Dji’s Rock Steady stabilization uses the shutter speed to assist with its stabilizing. I have experimented with and without ND filters. If I manually control the shutter speed I get a lot of jittery stuff happening in my footage. I mostly just leave the Osmo Action in auto mode and set a max iso of 1600. I recently tried using my ND filter while still leaving the Osmo Action in auto mode. It helped keep the shutter speed a little slower by fooling the camera. Only problem was it shot the iso a little higher than I would have liked. I may try setting the iso max much lower and see how that works.
@justonbrazda3846
@justonbrazda3846 5 жыл бұрын
Please address something that most of the nd filter reviewers do not. What do you do about the fact that using lower shutter speeds, has an effect on the digital stabilization, as they rely on the shutter speed for stabilization. Thanks.

Dunna! Buddy! Take it from someone who lost a GoPro Silver 4 after attaching it to my Jeep...and recovering it because of some honest hikers. Leash that thing down in addition to the suction cup. It will come off at some point. Also, if it comes off and strikes another car, cyclist, or pedestrian, it could cause a wreck or bodily harm. That being said, I got some cool video from the Million Dollar Highway in Colorado and also an offload trail...and even some cool video of the person who found my camera and left it in an obvious place for me.
