There’s usually a closed of section for away fans (5-10%) . Often they are escorted through the city by police to prevent them with interfering with the home team

They usually reserve a really small section of the stadium for the away fans and its completely surrounded by police in riot gear to protect those fans. The rioting and violence is extremely rare for the most part. The passion is very real but if violence was a regular thing then fans would be banned from going to the games by either UEFA, FIFA, CONCACAF, CONMEBOL, etc.

Most of the time the result of the game doesn't even matter, unless it's derby. The biggest difference from US sports, is that for us it's not just a spectacle, like it is in USA, it's passion, it's life and it's transmitted from one generation to the other.

The Ultra thing is tied up in rebellion against strict governments(sometimes unfair) and the Football clubs are mostly 100+ years old so they are woven into the communities, , blend that with gang culture , and your bro said it about Braveheart, there is a huge part of that primal aspect in there. There are some bad people involved with this stuff but also some good people, and many football clubs fans are targeted by officials(police and sport) in many countries because they are community hubs (in the more brutal regimes) and also because they blend with organised crime. Away fans between two rivals are accepted in general, but it's always really high security. Basically, the visiting fans have their own section of the stadium so they never get into fights with the home fans. But there are some exceptions. In the Netherlands, the biggest rivalry between Ajax and Feyenoord (clubs from Amsterdam and Rotterdam), has an away fan ban since 2009. It's one of the biggest hate matches in Europe.

To put it short , this goes on , on and off the pitch , every city has a team , each team has 2-3 if not more firms of ultras , firm is like a "gang" to put it lightly , during off season and even daily firms fight each other outside the stadium for power , money , and different "activities" that benefit your firm if you're the top firm of a certain club but , on match day we unite , we put aside our shit that goes on outside the stadium and we come together against the opposing team , it's a "controlled" chaos for most part , each firm has a firm leader , that firm leader has pulls and connections with most of the rival firm leaders and stay in contact to make sure everything goes well , there are certain rules if a fight breaks out even outside the stadium at random , you never kick someone who's down and you never use weapons , with some exceptions but no fire arms . Most ultras do not become ultras over night , it's been running down in the family from father to son for generations and what is even better is that these rival firms come together whenever there is a match against a team from another country , that is the ultimate exception where we all come together and unite against a rival country , you've got to understand that most of these rivalries are based on history , wars and oppression , one of the most feared and most renowned firms are from greece ,atleast in the eastern part of europe , mainly because of the rich greek history . You have cheerleaders, we have ultras. Clubs represent the town. The fans want the team to win. As you saw in the video, there are some not-so-friendly people out there. People don't usually look kind to them.

Football clubs are supposed to allow space in stadiums for traveling fans, even here in the United States. Obviously football in the U.S. is on a way smaller level but Major League Soccer requires all teams to sell a minimum of 100 tickets for the fans of the traveling team. There was 135-150 of us in Fort Lauderdale this weekend to watch NYCFC play Inter-Miami (I made a day trip out of it. Landed in Fort Lauderdale by plane at 11:30 AM, was back in New York by 11:30 PM that same night). Edit: however the rules for flares and smoke grenades are similar to Europe, basically it's not allowed. However since it's smaller in numbers, when we use em, it's easier to be caught, possible arrested and banned from going to games for it. Home fans tend to be allowed to use smoke grenades in one part of the stadium here in the U.S. but that depends on the team. My team (NYCFC) cause we play at Yankee Stadium (yes the baseball stadium) do not allow any type of pyrotechnics, smoke grenades included. Many people have been banned in the teams short history for using them in Yankee Stadium. Fun fact. Only been following NYCFC since 2018, club I grew up supporting was Junior Fútbol Club (they play in Colombia, my father's hometown club).

The sport is only a few hundred years old. Yet, the chanting is a much older part of this culture. Some historians believe that the Romans would use it when soldiers marched during their long journeys to keep up the mood. While Barbarian tribes would use it to motivate their warriors before going into battle, which is even thousand years eirlear then when Braveheart happened. Now in times of peace this culture is kept alive in the stadiums.

Me and my friend was recently in Gothenburg 200 km away from home to watch them play against Stockholm. We accidently marshed with the ultras from Stockholm which was the away team. The police was escorting us and we even had to take a different way into the arena so we don't clash with the home team. Really fun hahah

In some cases they must report at the police station at the time of each match. The ultra's are only a part of the fans, they usually have one or two stands in the stadium. The rest are regular supporters of the club, many families, groups of friends or amateur (youth) football teams, also tourists and so on. So you can visit a football game very safe, no worries! Normally in a stand you have a major group wich incorporates all other smaller subgroups of ultras\hooligans\casuals etc. All do coreographies together, chants and things related to the game itself. outside the stadium is where they differ the most from one another. Tipically Casual\Hooligan groups go to away games alone and without police escort so they can find home groups and fight each other, this firms are more about the honour and "stand your ground" mentality, they want to defend their colours and city. Ultras on the other hand organize big numbers of fans in buses or trains to travel to the away game (mostly they go with police escort, but some smaller more hardcore ultras choose to travel alone aswell). They are the ones o ocupy their free time to paint flags, banners and tifo's, they create the chants and are allways with the team no matter the result of a game. Both set of groups support their team with all forces, but demand good results from the team, if the team is not performing well in the league ultras and hooligans will act, and sometimes things can get violent. This set of fans are the last romantics in Europe, and try to maintain an ancient way of life, tribalism.

Streetmasks are there for a multitude of reasons, mostly to stay incognito. Ultras often do choreographies involving pyrotechnics, bringing them into the stadium is illegal, and with modern technology and cameras around the pitch you'd get identified easily, so the skimasks prevent that. Also ultras and hooligans are 2 different things. Ultras are hardcore football fans, they're the ones planning the choreographies and such, hooligans are often only out to fight. There's overlap between these groups too but they're not technically the same.

I've been to a number of games where we've been chased on foot to a car, or bricks thrown at us away from home. I remember one derby game at home against Manchester United and literally every corner of the Stadium had a fight in it. After the game it was chaos and I know a United fan that got chased over a few miles in foot. Tbh even before the game the atmosphere was electric and everybody was waiting for United's Coach to come in. It kicked off after one of their players gestured our fans.

When we play against our rivals in my city in Germany (against our neighbouring city, called a local derby), the fans gather in different places in the city and march to the stadium separately, usually escorted by police. They have separate entrances and sit in different sections of the stadium as well. Same on the way out.
