For the launch of this year’s Next Billion Dollar Startup list, we wanted to go back to the companies that successfully climbed to the ranks of unicorn and ask their leaders: what have you learned.
Luis von Ahn is CEO and cofounder of Duolingo, the world’s most popular language learning app, and a 2019 alum of the Next Billion Dollar Startup list. The mobile app crossed the $1 billion dollar mark In December of 2019 after a funding round from CapitalG. Von Ahn spoke with us about the challenges he and his team have faced along the way, as well as advice for younger entrepreneurs.

I randomly decided to look into you guys, and honestly your worth every penny! I began learning Arabic as a random personal challenge, today is day 15 and I can (read and write) 100% Arabic. Reading what I just wrote, sounds like a complete lie 🤣 15 days ago I would think so but no, the app is very crafty. Crafty In the way that it drills forms into your to memory. Anyway I’m at a loss for words! How ironic! I’m continuing… Hope the rest is as effective as the alphabet learning portions. Thanks for a great product!

I tried this app back in 2016 to learn Russian. It was fun but my schedule was so busy so I stopped using it. Maybe I'll give it another shot now.

You have to be disciplined to keep learning, that's not the app's responsibility, that's your responsibility

They charge to take off the ads, not to learn! So it's your choice if you can take the lessons and don't mind the ads or pay to take them off. They do not charge for the use of it and learning, because that's their vision (free learning) .

How is he a conman if his product is legit and its value is legit? Maybe you should learn something instead of assuming you're smarter than a dude who owns a billion dollar company
