FYI for those interested, Duraseal is Leslies branded, but is chemically identical (made in the same plant with the same ingredients) to Olympic Zenon, but is usually $20-$30 less per gallon.

This video is So helpful. We had a pool that had epoxy then had some left over so we gave it another coat to freshen it up. Wife wanted different color so we did it again the next year. We did NOT use a primer on the previous epoxy thinking that it was fun. Now it's flaking off big time so I have to do it again. This time I will use this primer and see what happens

Yes you might want to also give it a light acid wash before you add the primer to give you a clean surface. It does not have to be a heavy acid wash. A simple light wash with minimal Muriatic acid should do the trick. That way you can eliminate all of the left over flakes and leave you with it a solid clean surface. Thanks for your positive comments, they are greatly appreciated and i am glad to hear that you found it to be useful. Best of luck with your next epoxy application. Let us know how it turns out.

Nice video. I just painted my pool with this paint on Friday. Its been cooler weather in nor cal so condensation is occurring during nights and mornings. The surface is still tacky. Is this normal? Also, I noticed I missed complete coverage on some spots. Can I re apply paint to those areas? Thank you in advance.
@Socalepoxypools
@Socalepoxypools 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Robert. Glad you enjoyed the video. Condensation at any given point during the dry time period is never a good thing and tends to happen quite often. My question to you is did you apply the first coat of epoxy primer before you applied the epoxy paint? If not then I would definitely recommend you go back and start over by applying a coat of the epoxy primer. If you did follow the steps and apply a initial coat of primer, then I would recommend that yourself a few more days in hopes that the top coat will dry itself out completely. At that point I would go back to the area’s that have been affected by the moisture (the tacky areas) and sand those areas down so that you have a smooth surface again. Then you can go back and re apply another coat of primer and paint in the affected areas only. NorCal tends to have a lot of rain and moisture during this time of year so to be on the safe side I would recommend you tarp up and cover the pool after you final paint application to allow for it to dry completely. Very Minimal moisture in the air after painting your pool is okay but heavy moisture, rain or any other condensation will definitely ruin your project. Hope this help you out sum. Thank brother & Good luck . Let me know how it turns out.

No failures just a few challenges with pools that require better preparation prior to using this product. The idea is to prep your pool as best as you can, make the surface as flat as possible and then apply this product. Using both paint n primer will give you the best results for a smooth top coat finish. It’s a great product to use as long as you follow the procedures I noted on this video correctly.

Would you use primer on top of really old epoxy paint? In spots paint has come up, rough plaster below. I planned to use the rough prime in those spots… should I buy more? It says not to use their primer on previously coated surfaces. Mine is so old the blue paint looks white and chalked. Thank you!
@Socalepoxypools
@Socalepoxypools Жыл бұрын
I would first Acid wash the pool to get a clean slate. It will also eliminate the risk of having any more spots pop up where the old epoxy may be worn out or where it may have not been applied correctly. If any new spots are going to come up you will see it happen during and after you acid wash your pool. Once acid wash is complete then go and apply new coat of primer and the the top coat epoxy paint. Trust me it’s extra work but will save you lots of headaches later.

Cool video. If I have small tiles in pool steps how tonpaint around them?
@Socalepoxypools
@Socalepoxypools 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the comment Nuno. Much appreciated. Whenever small tiles are embedded in the pool surface I usually try and cover the tiles with up masking tape or painters tape and then use a small knife or razor to trim out the edge of the tiles as best as possible leaving only the tile and the layer of tape. I always try to leave those areas until the very end so that way I can peel off the tape right away just soon as soon as I have applied the top coat layer of epoxy paint since the paint tends to harden very fast and you don’t want the epoxy to stick or bond over the tiles. So the best way is to paint and immediately peal off the tape so that the epoxy settles into the crevices of the tiles as it dries and bonds to the floor. Hope this makes sense and helps you out some.

@Socalepoxypools
@Socalepoxypools 2 жыл бұрын
Either or should be okay. The purpose of the acid wash is to give you a clean surface and to remove any algae, dirt or severe on the surface of your pool. If you are going to be changing the tile, I would probably change the tiles first to avoid having to go back and re-clean the surface after installing tiles since they’re is a good chance that debris from the tiles will fall into the pool while swapping those out. Drain the pool and then Do the tiles. Once tiles are in then acid wash your pool. Personally That’s what I would do in a situation like that.

Hello, I noted you mentioned waiting about 2 months to add chemicals to the pool after painting with epoxy. How long do I have to wait before filling the pool with water and how do I keep the water clean while waiting for the epoxy to bond?
@Socalepoxypools
@Socalepoxypools 10 ай бұрын
Hi Arlene 2 months is a bit of a stretch. I would say 1 month should be enough time for epoxy to cure. In the meantime you can always just try adding a floater with Chlorine Tabs to help maintain the water. At first you won’t need it because you will have fresh clean water but as soon as you notice the water start to change colors then I would add the floaty and perhaps try and take a water sample to your nearby pool supply store so that they can test it for you. Let them know you recently filled your pool with new water and see what they recommend. Typically a fresh water starter kit is always a good idea but each pool is different and the atmosphere and setting also varies depending on where you live. Climate and pool usage also varies so the best thing is to have your pool water tested in your area by a local pool supply specialist so that they can point you in the right direction after you notice change or discoloring in your pool.

How long in your experience does this type of paint last? more than 5 years? also, does this paint hold up well against regualer pool chemicals?
@Socalepoxypools
@Socalepoxypools 2 жыл бұрын
Product manufacture suggests 7 to 8 years but personally I have only been using this product for a Lil less then 5 years and so far it has held up great. Chemicals in your water should not really be a factor in how long the paint will last but I always suggest not to use any pool chemicals or chlorine products in your pool right away. I always suggest to wait a minimum of 2 months before my you start adding chemicals to allow for the epoxy to cure and bond appropriately. You may also benefit from adding a additional coat of epoxy paint to strengthen the length of your top coat which is what I have in my ow personal pool and like I said it has held up great. Great question btw. Hope this info helps.

Paint manufacturer suggests 2 days but I would say it all depends on weather. If it’s cooler weather then I would recommend a minimum 5 days. With Hot weather, I would recommend a minimum of 3 days. Most of my projects range between these days for allotted dry time but I live in Southern California so again it all depends on your location.

Eddie. How many days after the pool preparation do I have to wait to paint the pool .I guess I didn't wait enough time because the painting is peeling off . After I empty the pool I did noticed some water coming trough the pipes that bring the water to the pool I was no able to stop the water leaks .I did wiped the water and did the pool painting and the result was bad because the paint is peeling off. Could you please let me know how could I fix this problem. Thank you so much for your help
@Socalepoxypools
@Socalepoxypools Жыл бұрын
Hey Eddie sorry to hear about your project gone bad. Unfortunately the only way to fix it would be to sand down or grind down the areas that are coming up with regards to the paint and start the process over in those areas. You would also have to drain the pool if the paint is peeling near the bottom or the floor surface. The good news is you wouldn’t have to paint the entire pool again. Removing the peeling paint layer and beginning the process all over again and only the areas affected should do the trick. Water lines tend to ruin projects like these quite often. I always make sure to cap off the waterline or fill it with some type of Putty or water resistant gelcoat that can withhold the remaining water that remains in the reservoir from spilling out. I then cover it up With tape and mark it so I can go back n re open the hole once I finish the project. But that’s just my method of covering those areas or holes. I’m sure there are many other ways to go about it but yeah any pre-existing water or water condensation prior to applying both the primer and the paint will run your job and unfortunately the only way to fix it is to re do the affected areas. You may want to take a look at my other video that I have here on the same KZfaq page titled “how to fix epoxy in a swimming pool” that should give you a clear understanding I’ve had to go back and fix it so that you can finally get the pool back to looking as it should. If you're going to put hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid) on a pool make sure to use an actual mask with a rebreather on it, like you would for painting. It's possible for there to be a reaction with the acid and organic lipids or oils that can be on the pool and have it release fumes that if you breathed them in would be like breathing in mustard gas. It's like 30 bucks for a mask - do yourself a favor and don't risk it.

@Socalepoxypools
@Socalepoxypools Жыл бұрын
Hey Raymundo. I believe I used approximately 8 primers and 14 of the paint but only because the owner requested 2 coats of paint on this pool. 1 Coat is always more then enough as long as you apply it thick and you use sufficient primer (also apply a thick coat of primer for best results. If your pool is about the same size as this one, go with 8 epoxy primers and 7 epoxy paints. That should cover your pool nicely.

How long does this product last if done the right way or does replastering the pool and not epoxing it last longer
@Socalepoxypools
@Socalepoxypools Жыл бұрын
Life expectancy as per manufacturer is any.where between 7 to 8 years. As far as which is better Replaster or Epoxy, that would all depend on the current condition of your pools floor surface. If your plaster is really bad and is breaking away from the surface all together or you have major damage in areas that may be too much to try and patch up or cover then you may want to go ahead and replaster your pool before you attempt to cover it up with epoxy. Although it may possibly hold for some time if you choose to epoxy your pool, you want to make sure your existing pool plaster is at the very least still intact and not falling apart before applying this epoxy top coat. However your pool floor is in okay shape and you want to add something that will hold is color and make your pool look amazing then epoxy is the way to go. Price difference in having your pool replastered or choosing epoxy is also a huge factor in making a decision on which of the two may be best for you overall. On average a pool re plaster service will run you easily over $15k. Epoxy application and resurfacing service is way less then that a , little less then half the price of what it cost re plaster a pool to give you a more elaborate idea between the pricing for both. Re plaster service may be more expensive but if your pool really needs it then it’s definitely worth the investment. Anyway I hope this helps you in making a choice. Great question by the way. Thanks

Just found this video and thanks for the upload and information. I am in Australia and currently restoring my fibreglass pool. So far I have acid washed it, then ground out all the osmosis & blackspots. I have filled in all the parts that I have ground with megapoxy P1. Letting that cure for 24 hours before sanding down with 60 grit flap disc. I have been video recording the different stages and will once finished upload them. One question I have is. I have epoxy primer and then epoxy paint for 2 coats. How thick is the primer & paint once painted, is it pretty thick? Thanks.
@Socalepoxypools
@Socalepoxypools 2 жыл бұрын
It depends on how much paint n primer you decide to use when you apply it. I typically use more of the primer then the top coat paint. The thicker the primer base coating is applied, the easier it will be to apply that top coat epoxy paint finish. I have done projects in the past where the customers requested two top coats of epoxy and it turned out great. My only suggestion is that you allow 2 to 3 days for the first initial top coat to fully dry out, before you go and add the second top coat of epoxy if you choose to go that route. If first coat is still wet or damp and you apply a second coat it will take forever to dry and it can ruin your project so make sure to allow for sufficient dry time every step of the way. How thick of a coat you want to add is entirely up to you. Hope that helps answer your question and good luck w your project.

Yes the wait time is fine as long as the surface remains dry and free of water condensation or moisture. As long as the final topcoat is applied on a “completely dry surface” waiting one week after initial primer application will not harm ruin your project. Just make sure that it is completely dry and of course remove all debris Before adding the next step and you should be good to go

Should I wait to put the second coat after the rain passes or try to get the second coat on 24 hours before the rain? Theres only one day next week where we expect rain and the rest of the week is dry. So difficult trying to find a long break in the weather in Ohio :/
@Socalepoxypools
@Socalepoxypools 2 жыл бұрын
Ooo that’s a tough call to make, seeing how you have already laid down the first of two initial top coats. And because we all know that rain is like kryptonite to epoxy it definitely creates a challenge. Personally at this point I would probably go ahead and lay the second coat down and follow it up by placing a large tarp over your swimming pool in a attempt to avoid water seeping thru and into the pool surface during the rain storm. However if you have a few days before the storm is scheduled and you can get it to dry a minimum of 3 days before it begins to rain, then you should be okay once the storm passes as 3 days should be enough for the epoxy to set it in. Personally again I would invest in the tarp, it makes more sense, will give you peace of mind and allow you to finish your pool In a much more practical way either before or after the storm with out ruining any pre existing work you have already accomplished. Great question btw. Let us know how it turns out.

Will the primer fill fine cracks in the plaster 2 coats?
@Socalepoxypools
@Socalepoxypools 2 ай бұрын
It depends on the depth of the cracks, if they are small and fine like you say then it should do the trick as long as you apply a thick coat of primer. If it does not fill in the first time a second application over those areas that are still exposed might also be a good idea. However if the depth of the cracks are deeper then 1/4 inch then you may want to add Pool Patch Plaster Repair before adding the primer. Also keep in mind that there are different variances of primer with the same brand. For a pool with moderate to rough surfaces you would prob want to add the Rough Primer. For smooth and not so worn out pools. Prime It primer may be a better Fit. It just all depends on condition of pre existing surface.

I own a professional sprayer. Can this be sprayed on? Or should i roll the epoxy and spray the paint?
@Socalepoxypools
@Socalepoxypools 3 ай бұрын
My preferred method of applying this is to roll it as I feel it is more convenient for me in saving cost in the long Run. This epoxy paint is very thick and dries fairly quick. Having a sprayer may be convenient and may help speed up the process of applying it, however it might also clog or damage your spray gun which may or may not be something you are willing to sacrifice when applying this epoxy paint. Nonetheless, I do believe there is an option to spray it on. Which you can probably find out the manufacturer website, however, personally I have never done it myself. Decide to do it. Let me know how it turns out. Would love to know how it turns out.

In my exoerience it is best to to habe a few different size rollers so you can cover all aread. I typicall use a 12" or 14" wide roller for the walls and a 18" wide roller for the flooring so to cover more area. A 1" to 1 1/2" nap will typically get the job done and you can always use a paint Brush to cover mssing areas as you paint alongvthe way. It’s always a good idea to have 23 or sometimes even for the same type of roller or paint brush as the paint tends to get thick n dries out very fast after application. Once you have used any of the paint tools chances are you will have to toss them out so be prepared do use multiple paint brushes and rollers a long the way

I believe it was a total of 9 for the primer and 12 of the epoxy paint but only because the owner requested a second coat of paint. Otherwise it would have only been 9 primer and 8 paint. Also restored the jacuzzi which was fairly large.

How long does it normally takes to dry ?
@Socalepoxypools
@Socalepoxypools 2 жыл бұрын
It dries overnight if you applied the epoxy primer coat and then the epoxy paint top coat however I always recommend that to allow 3 to 4 days of dry time. Warm weather is good but too hot is no good. Cold weather is good but extremely cold weather, snow or rain is also no good. You kind of have to check the forecast and make sure your not expecting any extreme hot temperature in the days ahead, same goes for expectancy of cold, rain or snowy days ahead. Good weather is anywhere in between those two. Thanks for your question and Good luck n best wishes w your pool project.

One Last Call , Man I wish I would have found all your information way sooner!!! Leslies pool never recommend the primer just acid wash and paint. this pool I've been working on has been a nightmare! long story short , pool was initially just down to the white plaster surface upon arrival, acid washed it , used the water based paint zero primer smh filled 24hours later bubbles everywhere! drained , dried , sanded the entire pool down to the plaster , used the smart seal prep wise ,prepped it again smh ! keep in mind Ive been using Leslies products the whole time , then went with the epoxy paint this time around and just painted it again with ZERO PRIMER!! now after watching this video I know its gonna be a failure again!! now my question is this can you put a layer of primer over the already painted and dried epoxy paint and then throw another layer of epoxy paint on that if that makes sense considering the situation I'm in idk lol !!!
@Socalepoxypools
@Socalepoxypools Жыл бұрын
yes you can just make sure your surface is completely dry and free of any water condensation. Be sure and purchase the "Ultra Seal Rough Epoxy Primer" for greater results. It lays down thicker and will set in nicely over the existing layer of epoxy paint you previously applied. Once primer is dry you can go ahead and add the Dura Seal Epoxy Top Coat Paint and you should be able to get that flawless like finish. Also if you want to make your surface not so slippery, check out my other videos. There is one titled "How to avoid or prevent slips and falls with epoxy" that will show you how. Great question btw. Thanks and good luck with your pool restoration.

Dam bro. Freaking Leslie’s said I only needed the epoxy paint. Just acid wash the pool let it dry and start painting. I just completed my pool yesterday. Also I picked a light sky blue color and they recommended “ice blue”. They said that’s next after white. And it’s darker that what I expected.
@Socalepoxypools
@Socalepoxypools 2 жыл бұрын
Damn bro sorry to hear that I don’t know why they wouldn’t reccomend you using the epoxy primer along with the top coat but I’m guessing A lot of the sales reps that work at Leslie‘s have never actually gone out to restore the paint any swimming pools themselves and have no knowledge of how to go about it. Not using the Apoxsee primer first does make a huge difference with regards to the length of time your new paint will last and how long it will hold up. If you already painted it then it’s really up to you on whether or not you want to go back and restart all over again I know it’s a drag but it would be a smart choice in the long run. It will look good for a bit but don’t be surprised if the paint starts coming up after you fill the pool. I know because it happened to me the first time I painted mine after about 6 months. From experience adding epoxy primer makes a huge difference but hopefully you get different results if you choose to leave it as is. This epoxy paint is expensive and so is the labor plus the length of time it takes to to repaint a pool after you just finished painting it. It’s a tough call to make but which ever way you choose to go about it I wish you luck brother and hope it works out for you.

Its because their calls go to Philippines etc. I tried calling before ordering online and they guy asked me to spell epoxy lol so I just said thanks have a nice day. I'll just order aquagaurd they are out if florida and actually help u to mix the products and set time etc. I'm wondering is the epoxy paint a 2 part or just the primer? Online no info on products or sq ft it covers per gallon. Also do you thin ur first coat of pool epoxy with xylene? Aquagaurd says acid then do primer one thick coat then 3 coats of pool paint in 20 hr increments then next day pool ready to fill. Says last 10 to 15 years

@Socalepoxypools
@Socalepoxypools 2 жыл бұрын
@@lisaloprestodehart1606 hey Lisa I’m just reading the second part of your message with regards to the application of this product. Typically I do acid wash first, then pool patch (only if required which in this case I follow up with sanding down the areas where I laid out the pool patch to make surface even and clean) next step on the following day is the 1 coat application of epoxy primer which comes in 2 separate gallon containers Part A - Primer and Part B Epoxy. Let dry over night and then apply 1 coat of Dura seal super epoxy pool paint. Dura seal super epoxy pool paint also comes in 2 part containers Part A - Pool Paint and Part B- Epoxy. Note that each product has its own version of epoxy catalysts. The epoxy primer and the epoxy paint proxy’s are two different kinds but that is how I work most of my projects. I have never used the Aquaguard brand but if they are saying it requires 3 separate applications to achieve and complete the project, personally I would try and seek another option as a good quality epoxy paint brand usually lays down thick and you shouldn’t have to re apply it so many times. Again that is my own opinion though so everyone’s projects are different. If you are finding that the Dura Seal brand is not suitable for your needs then I would consider using another brand like “In the Swim” which is another great brand of epoxy pool paint manufactured in Illinois. If not then let us know how it goes with the Aquaguard brand as I would love to hear how your project turns out.

I used primer and the epoxy and it started peeling off in 10 months
@Socalepoxypools
@Socalepoxypools Жыл бұрын
There could be a number of reasons why your epoxy paint is peeling. But the 3 most common reasons are the following: #1. You did not properly acid wash or clean the base of your swimming pool. The acid wash cleansing of your swimming pool can be complicated, especially when you are applying acid over existing plaster that has been saturated in chlorine water and that of other pool chemicals that may have kept your pool clean, especially if it is a older type swimming pool. Finding the right balance of Muriatic Acid and Water to apply when Acid Washing a pool is a delicate process that pertains to various conditions of your pre existing pool. If you use too much acid it can damage the base of your pool and even burn thru your pool plaster creating craters even after rinsing the acid away with fresh water. Even though you may not be able to see the acid seeping into the plaster it can still cause damage if not properly cleansed or neutralized. Making sure you properly acid wash, neutralize and give it sufficient dry time before you apply the primer is key and must be accomplished properly. Otherwise it can cause the plaster to flake or crumble causing the paint n primer to also crumble and or rise up from the surface of the pool days, even months after you have finished painting your pool. #2. You added too many pool chemicals to your pool too soon. Or your pool guy decided to try and balance out the ph levels of your pool and added harsh chemicals to "brand new pool water" shortly after your pool was re filled. Adding harsh chemicals to keep old swimming pool water is a must because your old pool water is just that old. In most cases that same water has probably been recycled, re filtered and re used for years and so it requires weekly maintenance, But when you refill a pool, the majority of time new fresh clean un tapped and un recycled water is used which eliminates the use of harsh chemicals because because the water is that " Brand new". The problem is that because it is something most people are used to weekly pool n chemical maintenance, they assume that it is routine to continue to add chemicals as scheduled. The problem with that is that in doing so it does not allow the epoxy paint to settle in to the foundation properly and so the use of heavy chlorine and or other chemicals can often time damage fresh new epoxy paint and even stain it or keep it from curing properly. In other words do not apply chemicals in your pool right away. You have fresh new water that will need a lot of maintenance right away. So give it at least a month before your begin adding chlorine and all the other chemicals that people use to upon keep a swimming pool. #3. Dry Time - A swimming pool must be completely dry with Zero water condensation before you apply the primer. After the primer is added. It must be completely dry before =e applying the epoxy paint. Any minimal water or condensation that is not removed or dried properly will cause the epoxy paint and primer to fail and you will see this problem occur. There a few other reasons why this my occur but these are primarily the top 3 I have encountered. Hope this info helps and sorry for the long explanations but I like to be thorough.

Can you use acetone to clean/prep if it's been sanded already.
@Socalepoxypools
@Socalepoxypools 9 ай бұрын
I have never tried using acetone but your best bet is to just add primer before you add the paint. If the surface has already been sanded down then I’m sure the pre existing algae or potential junk build up on the surface has already been eliminated after sanding it down. I would say no need for acetone but a simple acid wash to re cleanse the foundation is never a bad thing. I have another video on my playlist that demonstrates how to acid wash a pool. Take a look at my videos on my channel and hopefully this helps
