On Tuesday, June 11, Wednesday, June 12, and Sunday, June 16, 2019 (for one shot), I chased the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. These few days were some of the best days of my life. I had fantastic weather with an awesome show from all of the locomotives. The locomotives featured in this video are 473, 482, and 486. The main locomotive in this video is 482 followed by 486 and 473 with the least amount of shots. I really had a great time in this beautiful part of the country! Enjoy the video!
Disclaimer: I apologize for the lengthy video. I did not want to cut shots because all of them are important to me, and there was not a natural break that would keep the flow of the video. If you choose to do so, watching this video in multiple segments would be a good choice. However you decide to watch this video, I hope you enjoy it!

Rode this train when I was a kid back in the 70s. Changed my life. Thanks dad wherever you are :) I still have the souvenir knife made in Germany my dad bought me in Silverton. Can't even imagine living somewhere where there aren't mountains now.

@@MPT_Productions , That makes sense, or you could call it a heritage railroad since it doesn't have any diesels pulling passenger trains, at least from what I've seen. By the way, when I said "commercial service", I meant like trains running on existing time tables, just to to clarify.

The sound of a steam engine whistle is almost a spiritual experience for me. I saw my first steam engines (5 total), NYC 4-8-4's pulling a coal drag near my house when I was about 4 years old. Now I'm 74 and the sounds of a steam locomotive still give me a thrill. Thanks for your wonderful video of one of my most favorite rail roads. ;-)

We oldsters have many fond memories of playing around steam engines. I remember way back in the mid-1950's, putting pennies on the tracks near our home to see the steam engine flatten them.
@josesantodomingo8011

@@emsnewssupkis6453 and Robert Weldon, same here. I have been fascinated by the steam engine locomotive trains since I was a 5-year-old boy in in the mid-1950's (I'm 72 now). Our house, which was gone long time ago was beside the train station (very small with 2 benches for waiting passengers and a small ticket booth) in Agdangan, Quezon Province (4K-5K population), a small town 179 Km. or 112 miles south of Manila, Philippines. I could still vividly remember that every time the cargo locomotive trains (I called them "choo-choo" trains, because of their noisy chug-chug sound) passed by late at night, our house was shaking as if there was an earthquake, getting me awaken from sleep, LOL. Yes, I (and my naughty playmates) had the same fond memories of placing some 1 centavo (Phil. 1 cent coin) on the rail tracks to be flatten by the locomotive train passing. In addition, whenever a passenger locomotive train stopped at our station, we would ride the train and dis-embark while it was slowly departing. In a nutshell, the steam engine locomotives or choo-choo trains will remain to be one of my life-time memories to be remembered. My sincere thanks to MPT Productions for posting this article/video in KZfaq.

Having worked in HOLLYWOOD for 40 years I congratulate you on some great footage, however that same great footage would be a lot greater if you edited it into a linear journey that would really highlight the Durango & Silverton Railway! You need to ride the train and show the spectacular Animas River and all the other breath taking scenery, give the video some pace and meaning... For 25 years of my career I was at 20th Century-Fox, and we had an exciting train picture from 1973 called EMPEROR OF THE NORTH POLE... you know the music theme from that film A MAN AND A TRAIN sung by Marty Robbins would fit your great footage of the train coming round the mountain like a glove, along with other music cues. We shot the train robbery on that very same railroad for BUTCH CASSIDY & THE SUNDANCE KID, but many other westerns used it before us like most notably Universal's NIGHT PASSAGE and Paramount's DENVER & RIO GRANDE which actually staged a real train crash between two period locos racing towards each other, augmented by dynamite. A tip I learned from several Academy Award winning editors and cinematographers, is never fall in love with your footage when it comes to cutting, no matter how sentimental you feel about it. If only we had drones back in the day, instead of having to risk life and limb hanging out of a helicopter and praying we got the shot we wanted... best wishes to you!

Thanks for the kind remarks and the advice Graham. I do have a video featuring the ride as a separate video since an all inclusive video would be far too long for KZfaq or would result in cutting some great scenery
@grahamhill6340
@grahamhill6340 2 жыл бұрын
@@MPT_Productions In this age of very short attention spans... what I would do is make a 3-minute video trailer and cut it to the music tempo of A MAN AND A TRAIN. I'm too old for computer software, but seeing what so many KZfaqrs put together with it, well it's just amazing... film cutting, dissolves, special edits that took days, weeks even, now done in seconds... If it's good enough, who knows the Durango & Silverton might want to use it!

@@MPT_Productions Like I said... use the Marty Robbins song and it'll really impress them! Mix the music with your sound I could do it myself with simple straight cuts... but if yours and other HD footage was remastered at 60 frames per second, then the train and scenery would really make the viewer feel like they were there. It's spectacular like first seeing Cinerama or Imax in its clarity, brightness and resolution. Check out some 60fps KZfaq videos like a fan did the opening scene of BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK... others did it for short historical footage!

I took this train in 1970 and if my memory serves me it was very expensive at that time. The trip was rough and the engine smoke got into your cloths.

@@MPT_Productions You know, if you ever get the chance to head up to Alaska the White Pass & Yukon Route RR has a pair of narrow gauge steam locomotives. It's a really beautiful railroad I'd highly recommend it, even if it's only 1 video.

@@MPT_Productions Nice, it's a mostly diesel railroad though, but if your lucky you can find the steam locomotives, I didn't see them when I was up there in 2014, but they are truly amazing.
