I just got my fourth backpacking pack and my first backpack in about 16 years. I thought I would do a quick unboxing and first impressions video. There are so many backpacks on the market. I got the Durston Gear Kakwa40 pack because I was wanting to lighten my base weight and my lightest backpack was about 54 Oz. I had been looking for a while and was about to give up when Durston Gear released The Kakwa40. It ticked all the boxes for what I was looking for. Thank you for the comment. I have taken it out on a couple of test hikes and so far so good. I am waiting on some weather that doesn't feel like the inside of a pizza oven to try it out on a overnight trip.

Just received mine this week. The initial impressions of the Kakwa 40 back are favorable. I've done a fully loaded short trek thus far and the packed carried my ultralight gear comfortably. Longer trips are in the planning stay. Happy trails!

It sounds like we have tested ours the same. It has been so hot lately, that I haven't gone on overnights in the last couple of weekends. Thank you for the comment. By the way, Nice first name.

Thanks for posting. Looks like there’s no lumbar pad for your lower back.

I didn't show it in my video, but there is a thin foam pad in an internal pocket, in the back of the pack, that holds the frame as well. There is a velcro closure on the top of that pocket. The Durston video that I saw said that the frame could be removed but was difficult to put back in, so I don't plan on taking the frame out. The frame is an inverted U shape, with the open end at the bottom. This allows some flex at the hip belt. I was a bit concerned with the thinness of the padding on the shoulder straps and hip belt, but after a couple of test hikes, I am no longer concerned. The pack is extremely comfortable. my back did sweat a bit on my test hikes. I think part of it was caused by the hot weather and another factor may be that the pack does not have fancy air vents that some heavy packs may have. I am curious to see how it performs in cooler temps. Thank you for your comment.
