Very nice Graham, ended up buying a moonlight box late last year from your recommendation on another video. Can say I'm very impressed with it, no dust at all. Might be a bit pricey but poor man pays twice, glad you were able to share this info with everyone.

@@great_offroad_adventures yes 100%. From what I've seen, unfortunately half the issue is purely bad practices...seals folded over, cheaper non-oem filters, incorrectly maintained oiled filters. Then the other half is warping of the plastic box due to heat. Either way glad there's a trusted solution for it.

Picked up my cruiser yesterday after waiting just over 8 months for a new motor and fitting. Did the same as you Graham and replaced everything including every hose etc. just waiting on the Moonlight air box as no way I want to part with any more money. Considering your costs 2+ years ago now mine went to $34k. Definitely a keeper after that hit and only 154k on the odo. Keep safe out there.

Cyclonic pre-filter can take up to 85% of the dust out. Ram intakes have been shown to struggle with dust and water. Check what all earthmoving equipment designers and operators use. Australia would also have one or two laboratories that will be able to give you good scientific comparisons of filters etc against industry standards. Tuff luck, but doing changes to a vehicle is always a risk of getting the engineering wrong and the salesperson / engineer is not paying the for the risk, so good knowledge / experience is valuable - thanks for sharing.

One of the first things I did was to put a Moonlight Airbox in. I was shocked at seeing the condition of the inlet tract after purchasing my 2nd hand 200.

I can't believe that Toyota hasn't modified the airbox on the 300. There are literally hundreds of people on YT complaining about dusting issues on LC 200s. Donaldson has a nice looking filter housing too, with a really big oval shaped element. Did you fit an auxiliary transmission oil cooler to your truck? I think that's a worthwhile mod for towing too.

I purchased a new 2020 model VX and installed the Moonlight airbox straight away because I had a 76 series previously and noticed the standard airbox let dust through. I didn't want to risk dusting the new 200. Travelled along the Gunbarrel hwy, including the abandoned section last year in convoy and as you showed in your video no dust at all on the clean side.

@@great_offroad_adventures well to be fair it's not a lesson a 200 series owner should have to learn. Clearly not a premium airbox from factory, dropped quality on such a vital component for an Australian climate. Shocking how distorted and out of shape they can get. New box surely works a treat 👍

With the Moonlight airbox it concerns with the lack of wing nut fasteners on all but one edge. Where it pushes into the brackets at the back of it, how does it tension the filter seal?

@great_offroad_adventures
@great_offroad_adventures 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Lee. Around town to work and back around 13.5L/100km (our 200 is obviously far from stock), towing the camper we average 17-18L/100km and that’s cruising at 100kph it can go up to 20 if in hills or with a headwind.

Nice video some good info, just wondering are you making that power from a dyno tune only or are you remapping it as well? Thanks Ant.
@great_offroad_adventures
@great_offroad_adventures 2 жыл бұрын
Remap/ Dyno Tune mean the samething…I’ll try and explain. Remap - is the new “map” / file/ tune that your ECU now uses to run/ control the engine. Dyno - is the actual tool used to measure, power, torque, AFR (air fuel ratio), boost, speed all that. Dyno Tune - is the process of putting the car on the dyno and running it standard, observing things like AFR level, boost level, etc…..then a new tune/ map/ file is put into the ECU and it is run on the dyno again, differences are observed and you continue making tweaks/ changes and refinements until a fine tune/ file/ map is completed and then left in the car as its new tune or ECU remap. Obviously in that process it’s very important the person who is doing the tuning, understands what adjustments to make & how to keep everything safe, that’s why it’s important the tuning is done on a dyno because the tuner can observe and measure the differences as they go…..you don’t want a tune loaded off a laptop in a carport and sent on your way….because how do you know it’s safe, how do you know it’s been checked on a dyno to ensure it best suits you car. Tuning is an area where you want to ensure your using someone reputable, with alot of experience and that knows what they are doing and can explain the changes they are making to you.

I believe you did the right thing Graham. I love my 200 too. Question, does the moonlight fab box still fit the standard filter? I have 2 K&Ns and love them ( some people disagree lol ) Cheers Steve
@great_offroad_adventures
@great_offroad_adventures 2 жыл бұрын
No it won’t take a standard filter and having seen some people run a standard filter in a steel box, it’s still seen dust get through, hence why I went with a box that takes a different filter. So it takes a duramax 6.6L filter, and as the yank tanks become more popular, these filters will become easier and easier to get whilst travelling all that being said, I start a trip with a fresh one and take 2x new ones with me as well.

Well said! I’m another one that has a dusted 200. 150k, barely been on a dirt road and have been waiting 6 months for the new engine that arrived last week.
