I mean, Tom’s character kind of represents the whole arc of the story. Hoffman’s is obviously important but he’s the “straight man” that Tom plays off and is changed by. Can’t have one without the other. I feel like Tom’s performance was better than a couple of the other guys who got nominated.

Felipe M green book agree...shape of water was a good film, don’t agree at all...get out, another fantastic film...moonlight - easily one of the best films of the decade...12years a slave - again, one of the best of the decade, if not film history....I could list more, but again this was about ‘back then they awarded credible actors’...so Daniel day Lewis didn’t deserve for ‘there will be blood’?..Philip Seymour Hoffman didn’t deserve for ‘capote’?..DiCaprio for ‘revenant’?...mcconaughey for ‘Dallas buyers club?..some performances are Bette than others, yes (and same goes for movies)...but nothing in the Oscar has changed accept they are finally acknowledging a broader range of films...you base your opinion on one year...so let’s take a look at 86 - ‘out of africa’ best picture...really? Over witness or prizzis honor? The point is there were many, many years since the oscars inception mediocre films and actor performances have won awards or been nominated. It’s always been that way. Sometimes they get it right (rain man), sometimes they don’t (Shakespeare in love).
@greggately5782
@greggately5782 5 жыл бұрын
Felipe M and the black guys name is ‘Daniel kaluuya’ and if you watched the film, the trance scene where he literally has tears water falling down his face is reason enough to give the man a nomination. That was all real, and the actors guild respected his talents with a nomination too. Just because someone is an up and coming actor doesn’t mean that should disqualify them from an Oscar nom or win. Sure, let’s keep nominating Meryl Streep for decent - ok performances instead of actors who really deserve it. And by the way, Gary oldman won best actor that year which was well deserved from one of the best actors of his generation.

I have never experienced a more gut wrenching portrayal of such a heartless, cold, callous, self involved character as Tom Cruise's Charlie Babbit. I can almost literally feel it through the screen. I think it was a stellar performance and undoubtedly one of his best. I don't know who else was nominated for best supporting that year nor have I seen all the films that were released then. Even so, if he wasn't at least nominated, that was, to me, a mistake. Say what you will about a person's personal life, the man is and always has been a consummate pro. He always knew his craft like no one else.

You are right ! But I believe tve main aim of the film was to show a new and growing amount of human beings that many other people in the world knew they really exist. And I tell you as a mum of a gorgeous little boy of five with autism. They are lovable. my son can play the piano and his music teacher cant stop cryi g when he realises that a little boy of 5 years that cannot speak can feel the music inside his heart and touch the piano without being tought previously. And not all the people with autism are extrwmely unsociable. But in this film Ray was like that because he was abandoned by their parents without love and the right tratment to succed in life.

Other actors should take a page out of his book and be ever so grateful for their successes as well. 5. Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man- Hoffman is consistent of his portrayal of an autistic savant, it is not anything all that good but it does technically work in context of the film. (3.5/5) 4. Tom Hanks in Big- Hanks gives a good enough romantic and comedic performance. He is charming enough, and some of his man boy behavior is quite well handled, although not all of it. (3.5/5) 3. Edward James Olmos in Stand and Deliver- Olmos gives a persistent, passionate enough performance as the inspirational teacher. It is not anything special, but it is as the part should be. (3.5/5) 2. Max von Sydow in Pelle the Conqueror- Sydow is regulated much of the time to the background in this film. When he does show up he gives a realistic performance, that has some nice moments, but again like the rest of the nominees below him it never becomes anything that special. (3.5/5) 1. Gene Hackman in Mississippi Burning- Hackman gives the best performance of this lineup, which frankly did not take a lot to do. His performance is good on its own. It has an effective visceral power, and does properly establish his character. He also has just some great individual moments that really stand out, the type of moments sorely lacking from the rest of the nominees. (4.5/5)
