Dustin, beautiful family, the boys look like you and your daughter looks just like her mother. The other downside generally with the lithium battery is no external battery pack. Some regular flashes have the port on them to add an external battery back, which will give you almost instant recycle time, but as you said a second lithium battery could probably outlast the flash even with a battery pack. The v1 looks interesting and you showed what could be done with the dreaded on top of the camera perspective due to the wider dispersion pattern. I wonder if a modifier could be added like some of the soft boxes that would allow you to use this on top of a camera just to see what type of light you could get due to the larger surface area of the round head. Ken Wheeler, The angry photographer, showed his invention for doing this, but like almost always no pictures with results. Great job Dustin as always.

The quality of the light is really quite good, so I think it should work well with modifiers.

I was hired as a second shooter for a Sweet Sixteen event near Midlothian turnpike here in Virginia. The primary shooter had his set up for a flash unit requiring changing of batteries. To make a long story short - he had to change batteries at least three times and my GODOX V1 still had all the bars in full display at the end of the night. When the kids were dancing I kept going around the dance floor shooting at rapid fire. The prime told me that he was going to purchase two GODOX V1s. Well I'm going to purchase another myself where I'd like to use for back lighting, rim , or hair lighting on occasions. By the way I never needed more than 1/64th power for the area and I wash shooting.

I've been happily surprised at how accurate the ttl function is on this unit. With every other flash, I've had to compensate in some way to reduce hot spots. Usually by reducing EV by up to -1. Not so much with this one. Combined with the TCM button on the trigger. I can quickly fine tune my output without the necessity of a light meter. Considering this is 1/3rd the cost of a Profoto. I'm very happy.

The logic behind the rectangular landscape shaped head is that it mimics what is required to best cover camera film and sensor dimensions when using a bare flash. The problem now though is that it is only a matter of time that one abandons the problematic on-Camera bare flash and starts using off-camera modifiers. That’s were the round head excels.

Hello Dustin. Nice review of a very nice product. I got mine a couple of weeks ago and I’m loving it. I already own three of the AD200s, and I got me a couple of the H200Rs to go with them. Buying the V1 has given me the third option of a round head. And I’ve made sure to get three of the AK-R1s. Awesome accessories. Performance wise, I can’t fault the V1. Fortunately for us in the UK, we can purchase a spare battery either directly from Godox, or from PixaPro, which is the brand name similar to Flashpoint. I have used the V1 on-camera as a stand-alone, and on-camera as Master in a wireless setup. One thing I still haven’t figured out. When I use the V1 as on-camera master in a wireless setup, I have the option of setting it to flash AND trigger slaves, or to trigger slaves only (I.e. V1 not to flash). In a situation where I set the v1 to flash and to also trigger slaves, what Group is the on-camera V1 assigned to? And how do you adjust the power? It seems I’m unable to set it in one of the three flash modes (eTTL, Manual, or Multi). Does anyone know how to please? It’s not in the User Guide. Thanks Dustin and all.

Mr Abbot, the other day I was invited to a wedding and the photographers told me they had to switch back to Canon from Sony A7R ii because "TTL just doesn't work" and they need the red-light focusing grid projected by the flash when shooting in dark environments. I have a Godox v860ii and I have to say, I am also struggling with TTL and currently only shooting manually. And of course the focusing red light doesn't light up. Pros and Cons - Why use a round flash head when the camera takes rectangular photos ? Unless you zoom it out you will get dark corners. If you want round just attach a snoot. I never use a bare flash, I always use a modifier and usually bounce it indoors. Outdoors I attach a small softbox to my flash if a larger modifier is not practical. Round or rectangular, a flash head is a small light source and will be harsh without a modifier that creates a larger light source. I own five speedlights, a flashpoint evolv 200 pro(same thing as a Godox V1) and a flashpoint streaklight 360 and a 400 ws strobe . My evolv 200 has a round head and a square head, but once again, I never use it without an umbrella or a softbox or some kind of diffuser, so what's the point. Personally I think the round head is just a gimmick. I love my flashpoint gear but I think I will skip the round head flash for now. That being said, the magnetic attachments are very easy to take on and off, the recycle times are very good, and the longevity of the battery is good, light output can be adjusted down to 1/256 in 1/10th increments, and it has a modeling lamp. There are some nice attachments for this flash that make it very good as a 2nd or 3rd light to light up hair or do special effects etc. I usually double diffuse my flashes so I can't see why the shape of the head would matter. I highly recommend the flashpoint evolv 200 pro(same as Godox AD200). It is a 200 watt second flash so you can double or triple diffuse it and still have plenty of power. It also has a round head available for $59. The bare bulb that comes with it is also round. I use it inside a softbox with a second layer of diffusion or with a dome diffuser when I have to walk around inside a venue. The evolv 200 must be used off camera, but that's the best way to use a flash anyway. It also can be adjusted down to 1/256 power in 1/10th increments. A couple days ago the Flashpoint Zoom Li-on X R2 TTL (same as Godox V1) was on cyber sale for $159 and I almost went for it, but the Flashpoint Zoom Li-on X R2 TTL was on sale for $119 and I bought it instead. In conclusion, the V1 has a lot of very nice features but the light it produces is no better than a rectangular head flash. Its selling point is the convenience and ease of use and the attachments that are very quick to change. It's a nice piece of equipment. If I buy one it will be for it's versatility not because of the light.
@DustinAbbottTWI4 жыл бұрын
It's still a small, hard light source (hence the modifiers), but it does in fact give a softer light spread.
@montygiavelli81254 жыл бұрын
@@DustinAbbottTWI I think the next time it goes on sale I will give it a try, it seems a bit pricey, but it is new and I expect the price to come down in time. Thanks for your reply ! I have a lot of flashpoint equipment and I really like how it all integrates together for a very good price.

If you are using a remote trigger (I use the X-ProS), you can use even more groups.
@reuvenansh52314 жыл бұрын
@@DustinAbbottTWI So you are confirming the V1 has only 3 external groups (and not 5)? BTW, when using the trigger, how do you get the speed lights higher than group E for slave? Don't you need the bridge piece for $20? In any case, very disappointing using less groups than before as not every camera has a PC port for the trigger which you need if you also need the flash on camera.

About a month after I purchased one...my camera was in the vertical position pointing down and the crappy plastic hot shoe broke. Fortunately it didn't damage my Sony camera. I guess it's only useful in the horizontal position. Save your money, or get something else!

I don't see the link for the light modifier you had on it. How does the power output compare to the top Nikon speedlights?

I have an Impact Cruizer monolight with its own wireless remote. Could that fire the Godox flash as well, say to use it as hairlight?
@DustinAbbottTWI5 жыл бұрын
I don't really know the answer to that. It's possible it could take the optical input as a trigger, but I have no way to verify that.

What is the guide number to it compared to other speedlight flashes? How intuitive is the manual settings? I find with canon speedlights, especially outdoors, i have to switch to manual frequently otherwise the flashes would underexpose. Thanks!

The guide number is 92 feet (28m) at ISO 100 and 50mm. I find the manual settings pretty intuitive.

@@DustinAbbottTWI That GN seems lower than i was hoping, compared to the canon/nikon speedlight offerings, but then again, i suppose canon/nikons GN will drop some when measured at 50 instead of 100mm... Thanks for the info, i'm definitely considering picking up one of these.

Hi Dustin, thanks for this very thorough review (as always :0) Is the modelling lamp strong enough to be seen through a soft box so as to be able to see how the flash will light the model ? All the best, David
@DustinAbbottTWI4 жыл бұрын
That depends on how high the ambient light in the room is. In a dim room, yes, but otherwise I would say no.

@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you. I'll probably go with the AD200 pro and H200R head as the modeling light seems much brighter. All the best !

Hi Dustin thanks for the review. Can you share more thoughts on Sony flash metering system? I've used Panasonic and Fuji in the past and now Canon for its much better flash system. With Panasonic the auto ISO doesn't work when using an external flash; while Fuji only meters for the ambient without taking flash output into consideration, resulting in over exposed images in darker situations. With these lessons learned I'm more conservative about buying into other systems. Thank you.
@DustinAbbottTWI5 жыл бұрын
Well, at least with these two particular combinations, I got better TTL function out of the Sony/Godox combo than the Canon/Metz combo. I often use manual flash settings at weddings/groups/portraits for repeatability, but I impressed with the TTL performance here.

Dustin I’m confused. I have a ad200. I have a canon 5d. If I got this flash can I mount it right on top of my canon 5d without any need for anything else. I have a hard time thinking I would need anything to mount on top but you never know. That’s the impression I got from the video. And then off camera controlling with the xpro your saying I would need something else to control it ?

You can use this on top of your camera, yes. Direct flash on camera is often not as flattering of light, which is why I spoke about the X-Pro

@DustinAbbottTWI5 жыл бұрын

@Andrew714oc5 жыл бұрын
That's seriously a problem w/ these godox/flashpoint speedlites - damn plastic design that breaks so easily. I bought the 860 li-ion and after barely 3 weddings it broke. I'm hesitant to buy the V1 cause i see it's also plastic. Maybe the twist lock feature will help? I've moved on to the mini li-ion version since it's less weight but I do miss having the bigger, more powerful flash. I might just pick up a replacement mount from ebay.
