Algae are good because they appear to make us aware that we are doing something wrong.They also prevent the tank from crashing. I encourage algae to grow on purpose by keeping the light on for 12 hours and by overfeeding a little from time to time..but yet I never needed to clean my glass...O have algae eating fish and crustaceans.Ever thought of that?.😂😂

Algea isn't bad. It's there to help you because you have a different problem. The algea is eating exess nutrition. You over fed most likley.

Or just add more plants and do a waterchange. Dim the lights or dont keep them on for 12 hours. No reason to punish your fish with total darkness 😂

I like the algae on my hardscape it is nice and green and healthy and it is just another plant that keeps my tank healthy. I don’t like the brownish red stuff that forms on my glass but I just take care of that stuff with a toothbrush that I only use for my tank. If I had hair algae I’d probably do this but the other stuff is just fine.

Problem on that tank was obvious: insufficient sand layer, not enough plants. Possibly overfed too, as tanks like that tend to be.

I think better way is to lower light to minimum 6h, stop feeding, remove algae with hand as much as u can, raise temperature.

Would be good to include the need for supplement ingredients air. Due tonthe algie dieing itle stop producing oxygen and also take some oxygen as it dies. Along with the plants lack of photosynthesis. This can lead to a dangerous swing on DO levels.

This is *something* like putting a tarp over your whole lawn for 3 weeks to keep from mowing it. Get an algae eater crew, and plants in substrate and out.

Add fish or shrimp that feed on Alage. That will help to maintain your tank.

Not all algae is bad. Now a massive algae bloom can be problematic and indicate a problem with parameters or light etc but some algae is good

the worst thing you can do to your plants is take away their only method of carrying out photosynthesis and acquiring nutrients, algae exist because your plants have bad healths, algae are underevolved compared to fully evolved plants so will die if your plants are healty

...what? Just minimize how many hrs of light your tank gets. If you black out the whole tank...but keep your lights on 12hrs +....uh...it's pointless. But if you have a planted tank and black out the tank...your plants will start performing aerobic respiration, and pulling ALL O2 out of the tank. In 3 days...your fish might die...er and some plants maybe.

Your plant is fine because they are low light plant and lucky but, if you do blackout to a Dutch style or medium-hight light plant they will not survive.

I have been fighting algae in a small planted Betta tank for SO LONG! I think I'm just going to have to tear it down and start all over😢

TLDR: if blackouts, extra co2 or even algae fix doesnt work it might be a toxic bacteria called cyanobacteria Few weeks ago I thought i was dealing with string algae in my neocaridina tank so i left it for them to eat… well they didnt eat it so i did a 1-2 week blackout and it hadn’t changed so i started doing some research and found that it was cyanobacteria commonly known as blue-green “algae” even though its a toxic bacteria i felt so bad for my shrimp making them live with the toxic slime (i guess fish and shrimp know better than to eat it) but still i felt bad and my plants were not doing good so i ordered some bluegreen slime remover and well see how it works

Killing the Algae is not a good thing. As it kills off micro Fona. Best to get something fish related or snails and such to remove it. If you are desperate use a small dose of Peroxide as it is from alot of oxygen in the tank and not enough plants to remove the food from Algae.

Nah I rather rebuild. That's more clean up to do and not guarantee to eliminate the problem. The best solution is have enough bacteria in the filter and substrate and dense plants to counter it...and for fish sake stop dumping food in the tank 😂.

So instead of putting a sheet over your hobby like these aren't living things. You could plant more plants, do a few water changes, feed fish once a day instead of everytime you walk by the tank. Give them a smaller portion of food...or you know actually invest time into the animals you brought into your home instead of randomly purchasing them and letting them sit in a glass box for clout.
