Some singers are technically wonderful but lack an emotional connection to the material. Some singers miss notes here and there but sell the performance with their interpretation of the lyrics. Dusty had it all- flawless vocals and a great storyteller. She truly was one of a kind. Performers nowadays should study tapes like this as a master class on how to simply stand on a bare stage and deliver it.

I got to spend an evening with Dusty Springfield in 1966. She was in L.A. for something and my friend introduced me to her at a little club, where she sang a couple of songs for the audience. It was totally unannounced and completely wonderful. I remember after we left the club we went to Denny's and she asked for a cuppa tea (it was IRIS tea). Someone came up and asked her name; she looked down at the teabag, then looked up at the person and said, "I'm Iris!". What a hoot! GREAT lady. GREAT talent. Gone too soon!!!

1974 I graduated high school. This was such a great song for my angsty late teen years.....and in my heart it was directed to my best friend, who was on the Track Team with me. That was over 45 years ago, and it still resonates.....
