Actually I'm not surprised. I use third generation as my daily car and results reflect my experience. I drive mine off the beaten track from time to time in moderate terrain and indeed, if at least two wheels have some traction car moves forward, no matter, if it's sand, snow or mud. The only problem is with relatively low ground clearance, on the other hand it shines on solid roads.

I've got a 2014 CR-V AWD and it's been great in the snow thus far. I've been impressed how quickly it'll send power to the right wheels when it sense's traction loss. I don't think they changed anything from 2013-14 so I'm a little shocked to see it do so badly here.
@4x4.tests.on.rollers
@4x4.tests.on.rollers 3 жыл бұрын
There's low friction cooficient on snow, so not much torque is needed to spin the wheels without grip, that's different situation, much easier for the clutch-pack. Another thing is that the system should send the power to the right wheels before traction is lost, Honda was advertising it as proactive, not reactive.

Not really sure what the issue is with 4 gen AWD. Have read dozens of comments herewith. Supposedly two main reasons for 4 gen low performance are: 1) AWD system's software/firmware, and 2) clutch pack is weaker as compared to 3 gen. I used to own 3 gen of 2006, 2.4 litres, US edition. My first crossover. Loved it indeed. It had about 175 000 miles on clock when I decided to sell it. It ran fine, ageing anyways though. Engine would be not that silent when cold only. Now I own 4 gen. 2.4. It is known that this gen 2.4 engine is a bit different: torque slightly higher as well as HP. Power steering is electrical, not hydraulic. I think electrical steering saves a bit of power and this is one of the reasons why 4 Gen takes off a bit easier. I like the 4 Gen's performance more. On the highway the RPM is less at the same speed. As for the relative off-road capacity: drove 4 Gen to mountain ski camp on a slippery road. Driving was confident, no issues with slipping. In the city as well - setting off on an icy road uphill from the traffic light as if on a dry surface. Also noticed on 4 Gen the Stabilization system working when driving on icy road. Never noticed the same on Gen 3. Btw, on Gen 4 I am using the same winter tires I had on Gen 3 (kept them when sold the 3 Gen:)). They are Maxxis SS-01 Presa SUV. They are now 5+ y o, still grip quite well.
@4x4.tests.on.rollers
@4x4.tests.on.rollers Жыл бұрын
From my research - it's not about software and not about the clutch-pack, which is the same as in gen 3. The reason is the size of rear diff - it is way smaller than in gen 4. There were a few versions of it but none is able to hold high torque without falling into pieces.
