In this week's video we (Tim and Sam) spoke to our friends Josh and Ember about their Dutch Barge and how it compares to a Narrowboat. It has an amazing living space and they were kind enough to give us a tour! They really have an interesting take on boatlife. They feel more comfortable on rivers than we do!
It's over 100 years old and is kind of like an historical widebeam. Looking at the costs, we think it's the best alternative to a narrowboat.
Keep chugging,
Tim and Sam

I love Ember and Josh's barge, I love how they have something that was once a work barge and instead of it being thrown on the trash heap or cut up for scrap, it's been re-purposed and re-used to make a home! In this single-use throw-away society, we need more of this in our lives. Yes, I could live on a Dutch barge but being from the coastal region, I wouldn't be living on the canals even tho narrowboat living on the canals appeals to me, I would only live in the canals on a narrowboat but I could see myself living in the coastal areas on a dutch barge. I am in awe in their space as I am with a narrowboat like Mary L because I live (part-time) on a 26 ft Pearson sailboat in coastal North Carolina here in the States.

From the bow shape and the squared off stern I think that is a type called 'Kagenaar' first build in the area around Leiden. They started off as pure sailing barges for agricutural products, both produce going to market or peat and manure going to the fields (not at the same time) whenthere was little or no wind these were poled, pulled or pushed by the mate. When engines became more available and reliable the back cabin was sacrificed for placement of one. although smetimes as a in between solution small auxilliary engines were clamped to the side not unlike one of those Thailand long tail engines...

Great episode, Ember and Josh seem nice people. A friend of ours has a Dutch Barge on the Regents Canal up past Mile End, says it is nice to live on. I was talking to a guy from Newcastle who was living on a "yoghurt pot" moored up in Paddington basin he told me it was nice and snug even for a small boat, so just believe it is whatever suits your needs, and what you like living on.

Hey Josh! I'm so jealous of your awesome Nederland Boot, ('Dutch Boat'). I'm an American living in Emmer Compascuum, The Netherlands. I have always wanted to own and live on a Dutch Boat (or even a narrowboat). I use to live on the same type of pontoon boat that you lived on and loved it! I have one huge obstacle which is keeping me from buying a Dutch Boat, my lovely Dutch wife! lol. She hates boats, which I just don't get! There is nothing quite as freeing as living on the water, and having a boat to keep you from getting wet is a bonus! lol.

Narrowboat. The dutch barge has its charms, but the narrowboat seems way more practical. That said, I have never been inside one and can't wait for the Crick boat show 2022 which I plan to attend. It's the slow life I want, and if a narrowboat turns out to be impossible due to my physical form (1.95 meters tall and a bit overweight) a widebeam would be the next option. I am really looking forward to the next vlog though. A narrowboat race? That's kind of a conundrum or a really, really slow race: "Oh look, he's diving down the inside! I'll have dinner and in an hour we'll see if he can make the move stick!" 😁

Well HELLO! I had been wondering where you had got off to. Great to see a new video! As far as a narrowboat vs a dutch barge vs a wide beam vs.......what? A yogurt pot? No to the yogurt pot, right off the top. For a day out on a lake, sure. Otherwise? No thanks. If i had the choice, i would live aboard a dutch barge and rent a short narrow boat to travel the aquaducts. Why, you ask? Oh, that wasn't you? Huh. Gonna tell you, anyway. As much as i love the idea of taking the narrowboat out to the lake district, into London or Manchester or Liverpool or York (yes please) or taking her out in the country where the cows or sheep or horses are all the company i need or want when i am weary of noise? A narrowboat is stuck in the UK unless you lift her out of the water and you can't even roam up to Loch Ness or further to see the Norther lights, to cool off in the summer or moor up in Edinburgh for the Tattoo. But on a Dutch Barge, I can go up along the coast then turn into a river or canal in Scotland. I could take her across the Channel and spen a year or two on the rivers and canals in France, keep going into Germany or wander back over to Denmark if i like. I would not be comfortable on the ocean in a barge, but i can island hop and hug the shore as much as possible. If i was going to spend much time on the ocean, i would consider a bigger catamaran or a self righting lifeboat conversion. But a Dutch Barge seems awfully comfortable with hrr tall ceilings, the large rooms, the wheel house just above which i would also use for an office and studio with all of the windows and the wood. The large deck areas for music, fireworks, festivals and enjoying the night air. I am in the market for a narrowboat because I want to do the canals and the pubs. But if i had the wherewithal or if i didn't spend much of my pension on food, coal and licenses so that i could afford a barge? I would go with a barge. If i had the money, i would start with a narrowboat and graduate to a good sized barge. Fun video! Thanks and i cannot wait for the race. What will your brother be racing on or with?

Sometimes the right person lives next door, and sometimes s/he doesn't. My good wife had been back in Japan for some time when we met via (what in my grandparents' time would have been called) a lonely hearts club, but she had lived and worked for a few years in Toronto, so had some idea what California would be like. No Internet in those days, we corresponded by mail (hundreds of letters each way) augmented with a small number of (very expensive) telephone calls. Going on 39 years now and she hasn't thrown me out yet. Glancing through dutch barge listings, I see that they seem to have beams of about ten or eleven feet, which should be reasonably comfy. I grew up in an area of moderately low temperatures and high humidity; I don't miss the mold and wintertime condensation one bit--one learned quickly not to leave leather shoes at the bottom of the closet--but it is very pleasant going along with Sam and Tim on their travels.

Hi guy's Do you know if Dutch Barges in general charge their batteries and get their electric power from the engine, off boat generator or inboard generator ? Personally I don't understand why so many "live on board" narrow boaters use their main engine to run the alternator to charge batteries and so on. I have more or less decided to go for living on a boat but there are so many pro's and con's for a narrowboat, wide beam or maybe even a Dutch Barge ! I have to admit that I am hesitant about going for a narrowboat because of the lack of width but there will only be me on it so it may be easier to handle. Before I make that final choice and seriously start searching for a boat to but, I will be going for a holiday on one (me alone) and hope that will allow me to make that final choice. If you have any friends who live on their boats, I would really appreciate it if you could put them in touch with me, especially if they have been living on their boat for eighteen months or less and it's their first boat as my biggest fear is making a huge ***** up and getting everything totally wrong leaving me with a mountain of issues to resolve ! TIA guy's

Hi Peter, thanks for your comment. We think a holiday is the best option to help you realise what you need and what you don't need. The waterways are very friendly, you can get chatting to other boaters and ask questions about what they do. That should help you make your mind up. Thanks for your comment :)

Hi Yellow, it's an interesting idea. With a boat being a big purchase I feel the buyers will often do some research. It's quite a lot less dangerous on the canals because of the low speeds. We cant imagine they'd create a mandatory test in the near future. Thanks for your comment 😁🙂👍👍🏾

Hi Border, yes they do restrict the canals you can go on but they are happier on rivers. Thanks for your comment! 🙂😁👍👍🏾

A rose tinted look at life theses vessels come with lots of problems ie repairs they were inherintly built thin at 100 yeas will be iron and repair cost are extreamly expensive the small ones are known as tulip bages also the historical thing is a missnoma most people cant afford to repair thrm buyer bewhere i would say you video is this informative and lacks any substnce very few of thses boats are in reasonable condition and would not survey well

Love the Dutch Barges and they are certainly built heavy and strong. They seem to be an oddity on the market though, in my admittedly limited experience, they're either disconcertingly cheap or prohibitively expensive, but undoubtedly gorgeous. If we had the luxury of time, it might have been something to consider but as it happens we put a deposit on our future home yesterday and she's a 67ft Semi Trad Narrowboat so happy days on the horizon!
