He was such a great heel in UWF , it was Eddie who discovered Sting there and provided superb angles and matches. I recorded a tune for Tommy Wildfire Rich that pays tribute to Eddie that I think he plays at events he attends.

Served as the perfect bridge between old school Memphis lunacy and a young Federation eager to find its footing once known as E(astern) C(hampionship) W(restling). Eddie Gilbert's Feud with Terry Funk was an early moment embossing those three infamous letters on the Pro Wrestling map!🤔🎤🎼🎸🤼‍♂️B.W.

Eddie was one of the legends, a great wrestling mind. He actually started ECW. Some of his Memphis angles were legendary to this day, such as running over Lawler with a car. One of the funniest promos ever was him talking of having to face Lawler and he was putting up his MOM's car!!! Absolutely hilarious...."now they are coming for my mother!..." I was rolling in the floor.

I got to see Eddie wrestle live once in Philadelphia for Tri State Wrestling against Cactus Jack! They wrestled a best of three matches: a no DQ, falls count anywhere & a stretcher match! Eddie was one of the greatest heels in wrestling. Such a shame he was never able to rise higher. What could have been…

@@pooddescrewch8718 Eddie Gilbert had done a lot in the business for a short time period of his life. He used to developed a lot of skits that ECW and WWE Attitude Era later used. He was the one that discovered Sting and Shane Douglas. He help started the old ECW promotion when it was Tri-state. He was one of the earliest or maybe the first to start a wrestling shoot interview when kayfabe were still strong. Yeah, I understand he didn't stay long in one promotion and wasn't a Ric Flair or Hulk Hogan. But he sure as hell pioneer a lot of stuff that came later in wrestling. So in the wrestling community, he was a legend.

@@pooddescrewch8718 I understand the term legend is over used a lot. But when you hear people talks about old school wrestling especially from mid 80's to early 90's, Eddie's name usually pops up a lot from that category. Legend doesn't mean a person had to win a world title, be a main eventer, or plaster their face on every logo. For me in wrestling, if a wrestler made a name for him or herself before 1998. I considered most of them in that category. But after 97, we don't really don't acknowledged many wrestlers under that term because that's when wrestling lost it's prestige value of it.

As one who was in the Indy scene for 35+ years, and also suffers from bi-polar disorder, I can tell you firsthand that pro wrestling can be one of the worst careers someone with bi-polar can be involved in. It's a great thing when you're up, but can also be really devastating when you're down and wawy from home. The way your spot on the card is so volatile, you're always second guessing yourself. It can get very dark, and scarry. Oh, and by the way, it's very real. I worked heel. A lot of my insecurities manifested in anger and contempt for those who booed me. I was primarily a manager. It got me into more dangerous situations than the role normally entails. I didn't actually feel "normal" until I retired and went back to being a fan for a few years. I still love wrestling, and have a lot of friends because of it. But I've always told rookies "You gotta have balls the size of watermelons, and titanium skin." You have to have those two qualities, or the business will eat you alive. I'm lucky. I was able to get through it. Others I know we're not as fortunate. Love the podcast, Dutchman! Hope to meet you the next time you get up to SICW here in St. Louis!

Are there any 3rd Generation Gilbert(s) in the Pro Wrestling business??? The late " Hot Stuff" Eddie Gilbert & the late "Flying/Loose Cannon" Brian Pillman would have both been absolutely perfect bookers for AEW. They would have been in there late 50s or 60s and both would be tempted to put themselves over.

My theory is since he was kind of smaller then the big guys he didn't see himself as being as huge as other popular guys inn pro wrestling and what happened between him and Paul Heyman. With the ECW .He over dosed himself. But thats just my opinion. Plus after he suffered a broken neck during the early eighties . that caused him to take pain pills not giving himself time to recuperate. From that through out his wrestling career . Just multiple things. .When you read a lot about him but then again. Just my opinion. RIP Eddie Gilbert

Up and down, Eddie was Bi-Polar unfortunately, dad said he was in the Carolina NWA back in the 80's and he was teamed up with Missy Hyatt. Eddie's problem was like a lot of the other 200-215 pound wrestlers at that time, he was too small when the wrestling was idolizing the roided up giants.
