I remember the TNA fox sports net days. Raven at the time feuding with Larry Zbysko (who was their on screen authority figure or something) when he was NWA World Champion. Those Fox Sports net days were great. That where I discovered who Samoa Joe, AJ Styles, The Fallen Angel Christopher Danielson, the 3 Live Kru & my favorite TNA wrestler ever, the Alpha male Monty Brown. That guy was freaking hilarious & built like a world champion.

I wasn't a huge fan of it because it followed the formula of TV wrestling from 1980's NWA meaning you didn't really get any matches of any consequence, they were all for the most part squash matches and meant to advertise the the big shows. Plus the 3:00 pm time slot really really hurt em

As a kid, I found TNA through weekly PPV’s as we had a Hacked Black Box so we had free PPV every week, Raven, Chris Daniels and AJ Styles had been the wrestlers I gravitated towards. What you are referring to when Raven got his head shaved, its not the fact it was shaved the wrong way, they used lamb sheers instead of head clippers. So when you shear a lamb, the sheers are stronger so it can get through the thick wool, they are sharper so when they go to cut Raven's hair, they literally scalped him and cut him very badly. You can see when he is selling like he is out, he is almost wincing because it hurt that bad. And it wasnt 2005, it would have been around the 2002-2003 Nashville era and I think Dutch was still in iWA Puerto Rico at that time.

I remember discovering TNA in late Summer/early fall of 06. Right when Sting made his official debut for TNA (not including his one match in 03) including Kurt Angle head butting Samoa Joe and became a fan instantly because it had the names but it was alternative and opposite of WWE. I was drawn more as a fan because of Raven & Abyss with their characters being so different from the actual big names!

Inasmuch as I always say many of the old promoters and wrestlers got it when it came to a lot of things, they were also resistant to gimmick changes and cultural changes, as all older people are. When you're young, usually you're a part of whatever's going on culturally and socially. As you get older, you lose that. Nobody over 45 in the 90s was going to understand the Raven character or what exactly it was about and even if they did, they wouldn't have given it the same legitimacy as one of their old school gimmicks. It's just how it is. The older guys obviously understand psychology, timing and booking better than the younger guys, but that's why you leave booking to bookers and overall presentation of a wrestling promotion to a younger person, because hopefully they'll be able to connect what the booker wants to a contemporary audience. Heyman was great creatively and in terms of presentation, but he needed an experienced booker to tell him when he'd gone too far. On the other side of the coin, an experienced booker would need a Paul Heyman in the 90s or a Raven to help bridge the gap between wrestling booking and psychology with a presentation that most people in the 90s were going to accept. It doesn't matter if you have great matches. If everything looks like it's out of 1980 and it's 1995, you're not going very far. You'll have to buy a bus to take all your fans to a from the retirement home.
