Today I have decided to share with you my late 1980's Dutch-made Spartamet motorized bicycle, powered by a Sachs two-stroke engine, also known in Germany as "hilfsmotor". These motorized bicycles made by the Dutch bike manufacturer Sparta in colaboration with Sachs, used to be very popular in Western Europe a few decades ago as they provided cheap, simple and reliable transportation. The Spartamet is a very clever design with the engine mounted low near the hub of the rear wheel, allowing for a very compact and pleasing package. The engine itself is very quiet in operation and thanks to it's low oil to fuel ratio (1:100 recommended by the manufacturer, but a lot of people used to pre-mix in a ratio of 1:80 to extend the engine life) does not produce a lot of smoke. Today these bicycles are slowly becoming collectable items as the last one was produced in 1999, more than two decades ago.

I've fitted my late grandpa's old Gazelle with this Sachs engine and 5 speeds. I use it daily for getting to school and it's an absolute blast.

Wauw, this brings back memories! I've sold and maintained so many of them when i worked in a bike shop. They were very reliable and practical bikes and often used as work horses. The only minor flaw was the bearing between the clutch and crankshaft. Carbon deposits on the bearing could make it feel like the clutch engaged when the engine was idling. Your SpartaMet is in great condition by the looks of it and very original!

Thanks. I have tried to get one that is as complete and original as possible and i try to take care of it. I guess during their time most of them were treated like utilitarian tools so a great number of them perished...

a very fun vehicle indeed, i daily drive mine to school! it’s also pretty fuel efficient from my experience. currently experiencing some rattling coming from the engine when im starting to accelerate, and when driving at slow speeds.

@@isographer that could be a possibility, but also i forgot to tell you that as i accelerate after standing still i hear a clang/bang from the engine, and then i literally fly forward, so it could be something else

@@demoknight4822 You can still get replacement parts, the best way to find these parts is through finding listings for example ignition coil and other parts of the bike and then ask the seller if he sells the clutch kit which is relatively cheap and he may not have it listed, but they do sell when asked. they can also possibly ship internationally, best to find a local seller for it to take advantage of low shipping cost. if these options are unavailable there are engineering shops that specialise with custom built clutches for motorcycles and cars and can make custom clutches of the exact fitting and can replicate the part to OEM specifications when you send them a sample of the part you want to replicate. when rebuilding the Sachs 301 motor there are some parts on ebay mainly located in Europe which they can sell bearings and gasket kits aswell as a gasket maker for resealing the engine after rebuild.

@@georgewashington7687 hi and thanks for your reply, i live in the netherlands and over here there are still quite a lot of people who own these bikes, so parts for them aren’t all that hard to find, im still trying to find out what problem i am facing with my sparta, i think i have a rough idea of what it could be.

I'm surprised they didn't power the lights using the engine magneto, although I suppose they wanted it to still work while pedaling.

I would think so. Plus, i suppose the magneto is very small, has minimal windings.

I always see videos on these kinds of bikes and although I looked to buy something liek this I could never find anything for sale as when I got the internet at my house in 2005 all the neat moped stuff had pretty much been discontinued.

I have a lady's model from 1991 spent 3-4 months restoring it in the living room. Every bolt, nut and part had a nice clean and polish. It looks like it came from the factory now and i will hopefully keep it for ever. Its in my living room now, warm and dry and in the summer months i will go for nice trips. Can't wait! Where did you buy your Speedometer? Im very curious as they are very rare. I cant even find the aftermarket digital ones from sachs anymore. If you do know where i can find one please let me know. Its the last part i want to add to my spartamet. (Analog or digital both is fine) I still want to buy a original Spartamet with the old mix frame and 099 motor but they are starting to get hard to find because collectors keep buying them up.

Hello! Congratulations for your restauration efforts. Regarding the speedometer, i have bought it from a second had bicycle shop, it was attached on an older Dutch-style bicycle and convinced the seller to sell it separately. So i guess it was a lucky shot :) The only place I know where you might find something similar is ebay. (maybe ebay Germany in particular) . As we speak, there is one NOS unit for sale. Search for the following on ebay.de "VDO alter Tacho Fahrradtachometer duo altes Fahrrad 80er Jahre NOS OVP Vintage" and you should find it. It is an auction and it expires in 3 days. Alternatively, search on ebay.de for: "vdo fahrrrad" and you should see many variants of vintage VDO bicycle speedos. Good luck!

Did you ever post fuel economy findings of your heat coil for the car?
@isographer
@isographer 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I posted something about that in that video's comments: Here is my original comment: " Hello, i did got the chance to measure the fuel consumption and there is indeed an improvement. I did not have the time to make a video of it though. I have made a couple of longer trips with this car and I averaged below 4 L/100 km ( 3,8-3,9). Before, I was getting about 4,2 L/100km, in the same conditions. Mind you, these results were obtained using a few hyper milling techniques (which were used both before, and after installing this fuel pre-heater), but they do confirm a lower fuel consumption. I do suspect however, that due to the fact that the engine being already a small and frugal one ( 900 cmc, 4 cylinder) any fuel consumption benefits will be in small increments, because the design of the car is already optimized for fuel economy from the factory. I do suspect that a larger engine (let's say a 2 liter or larger) from the same period (1990's , early fuel injected) will see a much more substantial increase in economy after applying this mod. " -- So, to sum it up: ~5% (that is percents) better fuel economy, better throttle response and smother running engine.

Basically you have the part that goes on the wheel, which comprises of rotating discs connected to the cable drive to the speedometer. You install the discs like a washer, together with the wheel and it's hub, between the front fork of the bike, and one of the discs has a protruding tab oriented inward towards the center of the wheel which gets touched (hooked) by one of the spokes of the wheel, as the wheel rotates. Is a simple system, it can be installed in any bike, but it seems to be reliable.
