SO Metabo HPT/Hikoki released this funky looking D handle hammer drill. It's 36V and looks like a great tool for timber, but they reckon it can also drill 20mm in concrete?? Enter Boltah. Let's see what she can do.

Thanks for the review Boltah! Good to see an actual review on this. I did think about buying this but I don't have a current need 😅 We use these style of drills in metal work, for large drill bits. High torque is what's needed especially through thick steel. Good to see the kickback feature work as you always tend to brace yourself for impact while drilling those types of holes 😅

Yeah that's the sort of task this would excel at, where you're pressing hard into the material for long periods. also core drilling concrete. I thought it might have been some weird hybrid hammer drill they way they advertised it but nope

its a good looking tool. i saw that in one of the Japanese informational pictures they showed the drill being used with a coring bit. Maybe thats why they went with this design

They didn't advertise it with cores here, but I think you're right. Something like that would be perfect

Great look at Hikoki's most mysterious new tool... it does have a strange place in the lineup especially since the normal 36v drills can run a 1" auger easily. And in North America it seems like we got a hole hog/right angle drill instead.

I still haven't fully figured it out but yeah comparing to the normal 36v drill offers some clues. The d handle doesn't advertise a torque value nor do they advertise it for driving anything. So, I think it's intended for larger, lower torque, higher speed applications like core drilling concrete, self feed in timber, maybe mixing, stuff where you just turn it on & hold it for a long time. Ergonomics support that I think

When you slowly pull the trigger of their 36v drill, does it ramp up smoothly all the way to full throttle? Or is there a point where the RPM jumps up during the trigger press? Thanks.

That tiny rotary hammer looks so weird. Teensy. It looks similar aesthetically to one of my first cordless drills - a black and decker 7.2v NiMH one :)

That tiny SDS is really cool! It's the smallest proper SDS around and it's rated for even bigger holes than I did in this video

Do you own a dewalt DCD130 mixer drill? I do, just mixed 10.5 20kg bags of premix concrete with aggregate using a red 140mm spiral mixing bit. Have to run it in reverse to get to the bottom but it ate it up, easy. Also have the DCD470 and have been doing "post hole boring" with it up to 150mm without special handles. That thing is a beast. Used the dcd130 to put an 82mm hole through about 120mm of concrete using a diamond core bit too. That got it a bit warm, but still easy. 600RPM variable trigger onky fixed speed for the DCD130 and 400/1200 gearbox in the DCD470. Would be interested to see your take on either. I love both :-) PS the tamping late settles concrete quick smart too. So glad I made it. Have a draft email sitting there to you. Technical difficulties with attaching pics. Ha ha. Oh man.

BTW I bought the DCD130 to upgrade from a DCD996 that I just about wore out power jacking with OEM scissor jacks. Lifts any car with ease. The 996 in low gear was at its limit really.

No, I try to avoid mixing concrete myself! Sorry I can't comment on the mixers but one thing I see often is guys burning out normal combi drills mixing mud (and drilling with ice augers!) so a dedicated tool is a great idea

@@BoltahDownunder yeah, I would not try to run an auger bigger than 100mm with a dcd996 or similar and even that would be a struggle. This thing soaks it up with ease. You don't get a concrete truck in for 4 cubic feet, ha ha. I mixed a total of 2, 3.5, 5, 3 = 13.5 20kg bags with it and finished this arvo. Will brush finish the last footing later and install the IBC on top mid late next week. :-)

@@fredio54 Yes, the DCD130 is a beast. I haven't actually used it but I bought it and tried modifying it. The inside gearing is made for heavy-duty work. And of course the huge voltage will push it. Do not push DeWalt and Milwaukee drills to their limit. They are VERY powerful even at their limit, but at their limit they are quietly burning up inside and eventually fail. Their maximum power is impressive... but then they stop working. Seems Milwaukee's mud mixer has an electronic shut off, maybe prevents burn up.

@@Jakeisks I can tell you 100% that the DCD130 was not at its limit mixing 20kg of concrete in a bucket - I was - my desk job arms weren't far from their limit :-D even worse on the DCD470 with the auger, it tried to kneecap me with the 15Ah and pinched me between it and something, both operator error, it pisses through a 150 in sticky clay, cannot wait to get 200, 250, and 300 and make some additional handles and see how it gets on. But yeah, I doubt I'll be able to stress the DCD130 or DCD470 much without mechanical help. Concrete coring easy - the grabbing and stalls were the worst, but I figured out a good way to hold it to avoid that hurting me. Concrete mixing was easy - I was slightly scared of blowing out the bottom or side of the bucket, but it survived 10.5 bags without issue, so far, no more work planned. Between the two drills I got the job done.

How about an earth auger, say 100mm? I imagine setting the handle by the left hip/knee to save the wrist. Any hope of digging garden holes with that thing?

I think it's probably not as good as a normal high torque drill. This thing is better for high speed lower torque applications

In normal brick it is way better than the SDS. As the SDS will destroy the brick, this thing just makes a hole as you showed.

Anybody have the Metabo 36 V drill? Is the trigger action smooth? Does it smoothly ramp up all the way to full speed, or does it have any stages? Thanks. I just bought a Flex (FX1271T) drill that has multiple noticeable stages between 0 RPM and full RPM. DeWalt's big cordless drills have a noticeable change in speed at about 3/4 of the trigger press, but the Flex is jerkier than that.

Id guess that all brushless drills would I’ve noticed it on the dewalts but all mine are brushless a brushed tool might have what you want but obviously it’s not going to have the benefit of a brushless tools

@@adamdavis2788 Thanks for the reply. I have lots of Dewalts. Their mud mixer doesn't have stages and would be great except it's just too big for my application (opinion subject to change). Milwalkee's 2903/4 and their mud mixer don't have stages and I have used the 2903/4 until they burned up.
