If you're researching purchasing Disney Vacation Club, you've probably heard about the perks that members receive. But some of those perks you don't get when you purchase resale. Today, in this rather nerdy offering, we are literally going perk by perk, talking about what it means and if I think it's worth spending the extra money to buy your timeshare direct from Disney!

We are looking to purchasing a minimum of 400 points at Grand Floridian. Trying to weigh out whether to buy direct or break it up into part direct-part resale. An updated video would be extremely helpful!

But I would DEFINITELY break it up because if you ever decide to sell a 400 point contract will be tough. Disney can also do this for you direct with no problem (2, 200 point contracts instead of one 400 point one)

Over a year ago when we started researching DVC seriously, yours were the only videos that gave any real/understandable information. Eventhough I am not in the market to buy DVC (just because I financially can't at the moment), I have always been intrigued by it. And I want to know more about it. But every time I looked up information about DVC I just gave up basically because it is SO confusing and there are so many rules and restrictions and perks and non perks and urgh... :p So when maybe someday we will be able to buy DVC points....I will watch ALL your DVC videos from the beginning so I will be perfectly informed :)

Had to insert the cruise pic with the Dooney. Love it! Also it's actually over $400 per AP now if you compare public platinum vs. DVC gold. I think that's the most valuable perk by far! Anyway happy birthday (since I'm likely to forget like a bad person)!

Our next contract will be resale. Have to stay at the rest. We have stayed at Poly (home), animal kingdom lodge both Jambo and Kidani and Saratoga so far. We are staying at bay lake next week. Also I think the whole world needs to listen to your advice right now jen. We need to make our decisions based on facts and not on feelings. Thank you so much for the great content. It’s very helpful that you talk about the differences versus just putting the image up on the screen (makes me feel included as a visually impaired subscriber). Be safe

Clearly the KZfaq algorithm has determined I will suffer through long ads for Jen and now gives me mini movies before I get to watch the video!!! And then 2 minutes in, they gave me another set of long ads. I hope you feel the love when I watch that weird prescription medication ad for you. I've never really considered buying DVC direct from Disney, it's just so much more expensive and doesn't really work for the way my family vacations. The ONE resort that might change my mind on that is the Disneyland tower. We'll see...

For us, buying direct for our first contract was important because of being able to buy the annual Gold pass at Florida rates. We book 2-4 times a year and this cost for a family of 4 or 5 has paid off over the years. I would consider buying resale on future contracts because you’ve explained it well it takes some of the fear out of it.

That riviera part is a bummer. BUT i feel like that will be lifted in 5-10 years because they'll be building or revamping something new and then they'll loosen the Riviera restrictions...so imagine if you got a better deal on riviera today and then 10 years from now, that restriction was lifted and you wanted to sell your contract. It could suddenly be a huge increase in value. The problem for me is that they aren't giving enough of a discount for this near term restriction.

Great video! We bought DVC resale in 2014 so we fell in the lucky middle perks wise. We can’t use points for concierge/ABD/cruise but we do get discounts and other perks. Because we go only every other year we don’t have annual passes. We have done Moonlight Magic events at Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom. We did have the park to ourselves feel (perhaps because there were more attractions at those parks to absorb the people?) and for our family of 7 those events were really an $800+ value!

Thanks for another great DVC video! I was thinking about why people would be confused over the top of the world access and thought maybe they are mixing it up with the dvc Epcot lounge? I started with resale and I couldn’t get into that lounge until I purchased my direct contract. Obviously the ‘free’ (or included haha) soda was not the reason we bought direct but it was nice to use on a hot day!

Disney has not bought a contract back since March. Unless you got the deal of the century I would not worry. I just paid $135 pp for CCV.

Staying a future resorts is what gets me to want to buy direct (at some point). We can on our small resale contract but if we buy more it concerns me that now you can't.

For most people the only perks that worth it are staying in future resorts and the speed of the process. Is worth it for a family of five to get passes if they go more than once a year. Similar situation for dining and merchandise, how much and how often makes the difference in this discussion. And even TIW, are the savings for the life of the contract worth the extra?

Most if not all of the shopping and Senses spa discounts can also be duplicated with a no-annual-fee Disney Visa credit card :)

The theme park ticket discount is a sticking point for me. As a direct DVC member, i believe you have access to other AP options in addition to the ones that are limited to non-Florida residents, right? The gold pass? (It’s the gold pass, I just checked the website lolz). That’s big savings! But yeah, you’re right, it’s not a guarantee! This is a tough decision to make! I wish I were making it lol. Have you done the DVC presentation? My first was in 1993 and we didn’t buy until doing another in 2000. Regret not buying in 1993 ever since. But I’ve told everyone that when Disney is done there is virtually no pressure to sign right there. Can’t say that for most timeshares.

Mention that your a DVC member to them. They will probably just give up and walk away. DVC is always ranked the best time share one can buy.

@@jackpast No, I'm not a Disney fan. I think Disney is better than most (especially purchased in 1993), as are the major hotels like Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt, etc. The real question is, if all these properties were hotels, with associated perks, and you divided your maintenance dues by your # of stays, is that a price you would be willing to pay? I've heard of Marriott owners, paying roughly $350 a night, wishing they were in the equivalent Marriott hotel next door, for $250 a night. That's not a scam like Wyndham, Diamond, Buegreen, Grandview, and Westgate. The best timeshare I've seen was private, and ran like an HOA, 2 weeks a year, opposite seasons, and unlimited RV parking, recreational access.

@@thejackalsmith7329 Yep, I've got a presentation booked for Nov 28th, with some scam 2nd rate company. I'll study up the DVC resale market for Old Key West, and come in with all the comparable numbers. Once I did a presentation with Shell Vacation Club (owned by Wyndham), and hid my real travel tendencies. She kept asking, "Do you cruise? Are you sure you've never been on a cruise ship?" Obviously they were eyeballing my FB page, before the presentation!

You are better of renting your points and using that $ to pay for the cruise or a hotel room. You can rent your points between $15 - 18.

Very informative and helpful. New Subscribers here! Question: We booked at Saratoga Springs using RCI Points (non-Disney) for one week in August. Will staying in DVC on RCI Points give us access to Top of the World? Or is that exclusive to DVC Owners (direct or indirect). We stayed at Boardwalk Villas in February and now trying a 1 bedroom villa at Saratoga Springs and thinking about a possible re-sale purchase of points.

We just got a 240 point contract at BLT and for that, going resale definitely made sense. I’d never get so many direct. But we are considering a 100 point direct contract. Yes it will be thousands more but we are very carefully crunching the numbers for the gold annual passes and seeing if that makes it worth it. We know it’s not a guarantee that they will always be a perk but it wouldn’t take too long to break even and then start saving money with a family all getting gold annual passes. We figure we’d be paying extra up front but then the annual pass costs will be a bit easier to swallow every year 😂

Why Disney doesn’t treat you are a secondhand citizen when purchasing: whether purchasing direct or resale, your money ends up in Disney’s pocket either way. They are going to treat you like first class because you are paying to be treated first class. Also, considering the reflections DVC is currently on hold due to the great unpleasentness, do you think Disney will be flexible for Riviera DVC members on booking at legacy resorts?

It is my understanding that if you buy direct from Disney at Riviera, you can still use your points at all of the resorts. It only becomes an issue if you try to resell it. So first owner straight from Disney will still be able to use their Riviera points at Polynesian, but when they go to sell it that person can only use the Riviera. Correct me if I’m wrong.

Good video, I appreciate the level of detail that you reviewed. I do, however, have 2 questions. 1.) Example, if you have 150 DVC points direct from Disney and 50 DVC points from the resale market and you book a stay for a total of 200 points, is that stay considered "from Disney direct" or not - for things like dining and shopping discounts, etc. 2.) If you don't have an annual pass and book a stay with DVC points, are you able to buy park passes at the same value as when you bundle a hotel room and park passes or a similar discount, or are you paying full price for park tickets? Park tickets on a hotel/park pass bundle are a good value, example - my last trip was 10 days, the park pass component was approximately $55 per day. Thanks Jen!

Timothy great questions! Combination of points used makes no difference- you have the perks regardless of which points you use for that trip. And when you stay DVC you don’t qualify for any other ticket discounts like you would with a package so the only way to save money on your park admission is to buy the Gold pass that’s the one only DVC members and FL residents can buy

You forgot about the DVC lounge in Epcot. It is not accessible to resale buyers. Nice place to cool down and have some soda.

I purposefully didn’t because at the time of filming it was not listed on the DVC website. And yes I’ve been there many times! Love it!

Just so you know... I bought DVC on resale. It took months to get through the process. I've been getting lots of messages from DVC now. They want me to auto pay my monthly membership dues... but WAIT!!! I never got my member ID. I emailed DVC member services 3 times now. It's been 10 days and they never answered my 1st email, so when you say resale purchase is not 2nd rate, think again. My personal experience is awful. RESALE MEMBERS ARE LAST IN THE LIST AND DON'T EVEN GET A RESPONSE TO EMAILED QUESTIONS. I also called and they just refused to give me any information on my member ID. All I was told is... yes you're in our system, we can't give you a member ID #. Gosh what a mistake as a first DVC purchase.

Starting to research buying DVC and this video has been very helpful! One thing I do not understand is how to use the hybrid points. If they both have the same use year of Aug and I purchase 150 direct for AK and 100 resale at POLY - how do I combine them when booking? If I’m booking Poly I can only use my 100 pts 11 months out, do I have to wait to add my 150 AK points at 7months? I have read on DIS boards that you should make sure you purchase enough points at each hotel to cover your stay, but that doesn’t make sense for people that have 50 pt contracts. I feel like I am missing something.....

I think you get it - you can only combine the points at the 7 month mark. And yes if you’re hoping to take advantage of the home resort advantage you’d need to have enough points for your stay at one resort. Or every other year and alternate between home resorts.

I've been there (although we stayed at the Marriott next door) and although it's beautiful, Oahu is not my favorite of the Hawaiian islands so most likely wouldn't stay there. But yes, once we are free to travel again, I am definitely heading back to Hawaii as soon as possible! (Kauai is my favorite)

In my experience renting points at Aulani, we could not get any member benefits unless we showed a DVC card. So I doubt you would be able to get into the lounge.

Hi Jen (and if anybody else wants to respond...) - We have 200 pits at Copper Creek and we are looking to add on via secondary mkt. What issues would you find if we add, say, 50 points at same resort? It won’t affect our benefits much if we commingle direct points with resale points in the same trip, correct?

Correct. You will receive all the perks and benefits no matter which points you are using for a particular stay!

Hi there, I’m looking to buy dvc for our family and I’m really leaning towards resale because of price per point which is the most important thing to us, only “dvc direct benefit “ we care about is the totw lounge and Epcot lounge. I’m sorry I’m not sure! There’s no fee to park at the resorts but I believe it’s only free at the parks with an annual pass or when staying in property?

If you buy a contract direct and another via resale, do the resale points get added to your direct points to use? If you buy a different resort resale how do you book using all your points, or is that not possible? I guess I would like to hear how you manage your points from both your direct contract and your resale contract. I am trying to decide which route to take first because I feel like having two home resorts will give us more options. Like OKW and Vero. Just not sure how to jump in. You have such great insight!

If you have two different home resorts, they are treated like two different contracts unless you have the same use year and even then you cannot combine them until the 7 month mark. If that sounds confusing it's because it is!!

@@dummyswife1 Um, not exactly. My point was you can't combine the points and just use them all at the 11 month booking window - each resort has it's own dates for booking. Good luck as you research!

Do you choose which points you want to use (direct vs. resale) when you book? In other words, could you have perks available on one trip but not another based on which points you use?

Yes, you can combine the points, and yes, you have all the perks no matter which points you are using as long as you have the blue membership card (because you have at least 100 points that you purchased direct OR purchased resale prior to the restrictions)

My wife and I are DVC Direct owners, and I must admit I sometimes wish we would have gone resale. However!!! Resale is so much like buying a house and can be such a lengthy process, as well as can be full of many let downs. For my wife and I.... We are HUGE believers in paying for convenience. We see the value in buying things for the sake of convenience and we actually began going through with a resale contract and I remember thinking to myself "this is gonna take a while", plus at that time there were enough limitations through resale that my wife and I were just like "ehhh, okay, we can pay the extra for convenience". I will add, though, I think Disney does a poor job of taking care of their Direct members. Like, we pay thousands extra and resale members get virtually identical perks. Resale members are buying a discounted and limited contract, therefore in my opinion should have a very limited accessibility to the entire membership feel. Just my opinion. PS LOVE YOUR VIDEOS

Well, if we use the real estate analogy, that's like saying that those who don't buy new construction in a sub-division shouldn't be able to use the neighborhood pool (even thought they pay the same HOA's as everybody else). Because it's actually the dues that pay for all the things we all get to take advantage of. I'm glad you like my videos! Having purchased both resale and direct, I see both sides of that but I absolutely think everyone who pays dues should have full access to everything they're paying dues on (pools, resorts, villas, etc).

@@JenLefforge great point. I just feel cheated many times haha which is my own fault for going direct haha I'm in the car business. I sell both used and new. When someone buys used and expects "new car" quality, I have to speak sense into them and let them know that those expectations are unrealistic, hence the lower price and thousands you save. The thing that makes a new car a new car is it being brand NEW and the very best warranties and sometimes (in toyotas case) FREE MAINTENANCE for two years! If you buy a used Toyota, you still get a quality vehicle most times, however, buying new minimizes the need for repairs and head aches and such. That's how I see it. But I agree with you about the real estate analogy! Lol sorry that was long! Thanks for the reply!!! Keep up the awesome work!

Hey Jen! I do always find these interesting, even though I am not a DVC owner. But I am curious; if you make a reservation for an extended stay- or a resort that costs more points... so your next vacation is going to cost 210 points. Half of your points are direct and half are resale. First- are you able to even do that on one stay? If yes- do you get all the perks during that stay because half were direct?

Great question, Teri! If you own points you purchased direct from Disney, you get to use ALL your perks no matter what combination of points you're using for that individual trip. Hope that makes sense?

Nice info, Jen. Purchased my resale in 2014 and not really sure exactly what my perks are! Doesn’t matter too much as I feel like you re most perks I’d never use.

Yes!!!! but to get the 10% off merchandise, the purchase must be at least 50$ or more. Also, we used to get 10% off all dinning but now its just select restaurants.

To my knowledge the only people that can purchase table and wonderland is annual pass holders and the blue DVC card holders.

You only get a discount on gold passes, you will pay full price for platinum passes but they have NO BLOCK dates.

Sorry I'm blowing up your comments section lol, I'm curious how much a person should expect to pay in dues each year and what your experience has been with increases each year in those costs, and if you have a point in which you'd say this is no longer worth it?

Ashlie, I’ve had 2 different contracts since 2000...one through Disney and the other resale. Dues are around $1000/year based on 165 points. But each resort is different. Just google and you can find historical prices and what each resort is presently assessing dues/point. The more points you buy, the more dues you pay.

I believe there is a discount for CA parks as well but I’m honestly not sure? There wasn’t one for the DL annual pass I purchased but there may be for others??

I think buying resale would be the way to go for me. I don’t actually live near Orlando or go to Disney more than once a year, so the AP wouldn’t be worth it. I agree that the amount of money saved far outweighs the discounts. Overall, I do enjoy saving money 😁

I bought resale because it just wasn't worth the extra money I'd have to pay to get those points directly from Disney. It would have been faster to buy direct, but I'll take the waiting to save almost $15k.
