I like how Charlie wasn’t just a self pitying guy. He was a little bit of an asshole he had done some unforgivable stuff. I love well rounded characters. Charlie kept it real. He knew he deserved the heat he got from the people he hurt

I've watched a few sad films, films that cover topics close to me, but I've never cried from them before The Whale. Charlies addiction hits really close to home because it's not a 'typical' addiction, but it's killing him throughout the film. I find Ellie really relatable, too, which made their scenes quite upsetting. The ending especially.

Brendan, the range of emotions you brought forward were truly Impressive and captivating. Then your physical struggles with the weight made me keep watching, despite how some of the characters annoyed me. I felt the pain of your character. The film isn't for everyone because of the depth of feelings and self imposed suffering. Who has never felt self hate or endured self sabotage? I'm not a fan of Marvel and other action films. Ty to the director and writer and cast for making a movie about real people that made me experience real feelings. It's everything a movie can be.

A very interesting aspect of Charlie's character is that he seems the most hopeful out of all the people around him, despite being in the worst situation out of all of them. He used his hope to fuel him to better himself and reconnect with his daughter no matter how difficult she makes it. While the others are the ones who are stuck in their pain, anger, ideology, etc. And I think Charlie realizes that his loss of hope after the death of his partner is what lead him to that state, but a bit late as he's dying. Throughout his dialogue with everyone you see him trying to inject hope into them because he knows what it's like to lose it and what it could lead to. So in a way, it was liberating for someone as physically and mentally stuck as he was, and I feel like that was his message and Brendan fricking Fraser shows every possible emotion of relief that he's sort of "made it" but also the regret that he couldn've done this way earlier, reconnect with his daughter, save himself and his friend if he only had some hope.

This movie is unparalleled and truly one of a kind. It speaks the darkness of addictions and how far it can go. The self doubt but still having that light at the end. There's something about this film that never fails to make me cry, I'm still trying to understand it but it speaks to me on such a deep emotional level. It definitely has something to do with my addiction and my strive to see the light. Best film I have ever seen in my life

It shows what a truly collaborative process making The Whale was...from the director to the writer to the actors to the composer, they all seemed to talk about putting something of theirselves into the creative process. I watched the film last night. Woke up thinking about it this morning. All the actors were superb in their roles as was the writing, directing and score. When Brendan won his well deserved Oscar, the whole team won that day. Bravo.

He'd already "played" gay 6 previous times and his past experience of walking out on his own wife and kids in 2007 for a guy he met in China (Mummy 3) made it a walk in the park.

About Ellie's essay... The disconnection between human dreams and reality is the core of Ellie's essay. This is the reason why she feels sad for Ahab. On one side, the aspiration and pursuit of meaning, on the other, the overwhelming weight of indifferent nature. The essay also makes us think about those situations in which we may have strived for something, only to realize that it didn't bring us the satisfaction or happiness we expected. After all, how many of us have dedicated our lives to a goal that, in the end, will not help us at all? Moreover, when Ellie says "just for a while" (which seems to be the excerpt from the essay that enchanted her father the most), this can be interpreted as meaning that although Melville may offer us a temporary respite from the emotional and existential conflicts in the story in order to spare us, he cannot sustain this "pretense" indefinitely. At some point, there will be no way out but to face head-on the fundamental problem of human life proposed. There is a poetic beauty in this approach, as it acknowledges the inescapable reality of the dilemmas we face.

I honestly feel like I'm going crazy for thinking that "Charlie" was actually God being portrayed, like the words that he said to "Ellie" Even when "Ellie" spoke so ill to him he kept on saying she was amazing, he still saw the good in her and which he was right because "Ellie" was in fact a good person who just didn't know how to be one because of the trauma that was caused because her dad (Charlie) left, but my point is the characteristics of who God is were being portrayed, because I believe that God no matter how bad you are or how evil you think you are he would still say that you are amazing which is why the statement "PEOPLE ARE AMAZING" was highlighted through out the movie. When "Ellie" was angry at her dad, "Charlie", he said to her that "you don't have to be angry with the whole world you can just be angry at me " which is exactly what God would say to you.
@Loverati_
@Loverati_ Жыл бұрын
God doesn't want you to be angry at the world but he wants you to be angry at him because his the one that made you/formed you from the beginning that's why he doesn't want you to blame other people for the pain that you feel, but instead he wants you to take out your emotions at him because he wants a relationship with you, that's why during the film when "Ellie" came by and wanted to leave "Charlie" told her that you can leave if you want to because he didn't want her feeling like she's forced to form a relationship with her dad, which is exactly how/who God is, God doesn't want you to feel that you are forced to have a relationship with him but he 100% wants one with you without a doubt, "Charlie" was even willing to pay just to have "Ellie" around which I think is what God would do, God would do anything just to have a relationship with you.

Love the movie! But I feel like the religious kid could have not been in the entire film and the outcome would be exactly the same.. does he really need to be here? Lol

Yeah mainly for the movie to show ellies transformation. She saves him and helps him go back home. Ellie would just be even more of a bitch without that haha

A kind of bizarre thing to say. Every character's story is woven into Charlie's so that every facet of the grief surrounding the death of Allen is revealed and so every character including Thomas gets to tell their story, or that it's revealed. The character of the kid (Thomas) is especially important in revealing Liz's character and her grief as she reveals the circumstances of her brother Allen's death and how deeply it affected her. It's also to reveal to the viewer that by the end it didn't matter what Liz told Thomas because he was more obsessed with getting Charlie to convert than to see Charlie as a person. Thomas condemns Charlie's homosexuality using bible verse and sort of weaponizes it as a way to blame their homosexuality for Allen's suicide rather than seeing how his religion affected Allen and it's domino effect. You take Thomas out of the equation and that whole throughline is never revealed and that would ruin the movie. Sam Hunter's story and biographical insight is imperative to the storyline involving his homosexuality and his religious upbringing. That truth is imperative in revealing the relationship of Charlie and Allen in that particular environment.

@@ifyouonlyknew811 With all sincerity, you need professional help. If you devoted a fraction of the time you spend daily, trolling Brendan Fraser fans to INSTEAD: talking to a therapist & addressing your mental health problems surrounding Brendan Fraser, his fans, or anyone you deem "undesirable" (men, gays, etc.), --With enough clarity and distance from the internet you might be able to truly see and fix your problems and heal from whatever it is you're projecting onto this man and his fan base on a daily basis. Chances are, you are not dealing with reality and you'll ignore this and continue your harassment, homophobic comments, and hatred of Fraser and ANYONE who compliments the man. Until of course you hit rock bottom with all the negativity. DEEP enough for you? Good luck.

The daughter is just such a black and white “i hate u” character, not much depth in the dialogue imo. The asian female was just plain annoying the whole time as well. Brendan was just so nice and constantly being yelled at
