Ms. J. It's a fair assumption. After all, it is the 'New World'. I wonder though if the Hollywood Western music you're thinking of was really more from Aaron Copland. He in turn may have been influenced by the Dvorak.

Dvorak used a different rhythm from Beethoven but in a similar chord progression making it inspired by but not the same. Have to say, playing this movement on the timpani was one of the highlights of my life

That would be, I am sure, that a large amount of modern film music is based on symphonies. Look at movement 4 for a snippet that was taken for Jaws, for example. And Vader's Theme was taken, with inspiration, from Mars, Bringer of War, by Holst. As things go, I very much feel that nothing can live up to the originals.
