At the Colonia Dignidad compound in Chile, Paul Schäfer ruled over his followers with an iron fist. Exhausting work, violence, and abuse dominated daily life. During the Pinochet dictatorship, political prisoners were tortured and murdered there.
Decades of human rights abuses at Colonia Dignidad made the settlement notorious around the world. Horst Schaffrik still lives at the compound, and says: "The sect's structures are in place." In 1961, the settlement's founder, Paul Schäfer, started building a totalitarian religious community that was completely cut off from the outside world. This documentary investigates the influence of Schäfer's reign of terror, which is still felt even today.
Filmmaker Matthias Ebert interviews Willi Malessa, who was forced to dig up skeletons in the 1970s, and then watched as the bones were burned to hide evidence of the atrocities. But the remains of political prisoners are still said to be buried there -- and Malessa wants to help find them.
Many former leaders of Colonia Dignidad refuse to take part in any investigations -- and they've stayed silent about the alleged mass graves. Meanwhile, the sect's financial structures are still in place: agricultural businesses, a hotel, and real-estate companies are combined in a corporation that has publicly-traded stock. Schaffrik calls this a "diabolical structure." He says that former cult members like him worked with Schäfer to build up the huge company -- but only few benefit from it today.
This documentary investigates the long shadow cast by Colonia Dignidad.

Hey that's great, you are an expert in archeological ground research or something, perhaps you could volunteer some time and tell them this is the best method to utilise and encourage some of your local businesses or governments to assist in donating that equipment. Because you would not people advice in a field you had no authority in, would you, otherwise all you are saying is thoughts and prayers (which is garbage) and you really want the world to know about this, that's what you said, help make it so.

@@minirock000 Are you OK ? were you hit in the head as a child so you don’t actually read everything before you comment because what you ranted about made absolutely no sense, you literally don’t have to be an archaeologist to know about ground penetrating radar and that stuff is thousands of dollars, have you ever actually used it because if you have then you would know that. You really should try reading everyone’s comment fully before you act like you’re knowledgeable in an aspect that you obviously have no idea what’s going on in. Oh and if you’re going to rant try using complete sentences and things that people actually understand. Think before for you write. By the way I do have a certificate in archaeology thank you very much but that has nothing to do with radar equipment.

Never mind, you just bought a certificate. Now I really don't feel like engaging with anyone that makes me feel as disgusting as you make me feel. I hate people that must insult immediately. For the record, I was told to use complete sentences by someone that writes this. I guess you prefer all one sentence. Your use of "literally" is incorrect as well. Took me 4 years of work.....and many trips to Chile. if any one is interested it will be published by Delpire and Co, in Paris. released in September 2023 I hope. Under Dark Roots/Colonia Dignidad. It shows even more than this film....and sadly, yes, no one has been compensated bar a token sum given by the German gov, and the search for DNA have been halted again, as those in government in charge of the excavations, happen to also be 'friends' of Colonia Dignidad.... a never ending search for the missing, not even their names have been revealed by members of the sect who participated in their disappearance. The last of the leaders involved in torture and the disappearance of some 30 men and women, died in jail last month without revealing anything.

It's a great documentary, but I think that the title is not ideal and could be improved. Few people are interested in the business of cults, people know what cults do, in particular in South America. However, Germany's involvement in the abuse of forced child labor in Chile would have a different impact on your viewers and attract more people to see what it's all about, in my opinion anyway.

There is a lots of ways to find charred remains. Dogs are a great way and Satellite Imagery can also be used. But, I do not think that you will even need that. What you will need are people who are trained in phycology. Because by watching what I have seen and read about. The people that still live there may not want to leave for fear that they will either have Mentle Lapse or Some Government Agents might want to question them further. Because I believe that they know more too. And believe me when I say this, I fully understand what those ppl are going through. You can try to take samples from the tree's. Tree's are unique, in that they filter pollution through their bark. Find and Arborist, to help. And the ppl that live there now, may have been drugged to perform tasks that they do not remember. Because living there now, would be a nightmare that never goes away. These ppl may remember things during certain situations. I'm sorry, I don't see any other alternative. The question remains, why do they still live there?

This is beyond egregious. The gvmnt has zero interest in seeking justice because they are complicit. American slavery was more horrific, lasted over 200 years, and there was never any justice only the perpetrators were compensated til this day. The plantations where these horrors took place are now venues for weddings, bed and breakfasts, and movie sets. The evil of men.
