For many, New York City is a place of dreams. But John Torres knows it's darker sides. He and his family live in one of the city's homeless shelters.
For more than a year John Torres and his wife Zoe have been looking for an apartment, without any luck. A daughter being added to the equation hasn't made things any easier. John has a part-time job, but it doesn’t pay enough for them to make ends meet. The challenge he faces is one affecting many. As of January 2023, around 650,000 Americans are in a similar position - the highest number of homeless people in the USA ever, with more than 90,000 in New York alone. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, many aid programs have been discontinued and the cost of housing has risen so dramatically, that in some cases residents can no longer afford the rent and end up on the streets. Many of the organizations offering aid are privately funded, like the one helping John Torres. But finding affordable housing is difficult. A report by Benjamin Alvarez Gruber.

John, please do not have any more children until you get on your feet financially and steady. If you have more children, you will only find it harder to climb out of poverty. You have a beautiful baby girl, work hard for her now so that she does not have to struggle later in life. Marry your girlfriend so that she has financial security should something happen to you (New York City is a very violent and dangerous place to try to survive in). Best of luck and congratulations on turning your life around and staying out of crime.

I don’t why many American parents kick out their children once they turn 18. In other cultures like Indian and Italian, children are allowed with their parents as long as they want and there’s no societal shame in adults in their 40s living with their parents.

Maybe a lot of parents really cant understand that its not the same as 30 years ago, and that getting a job simply isnt cutting it anymore. You either got to have a job that pays like $6000/mo at least, or you got to have a lot of patience, or you have to be really lucky and have good friends you are prepared to share a house with. You cant "just get" a place nowadays. Maybe parents think: Well I got a job, went through all the effort and managed to stand on my own two feet, and simply cannot grasp that this is just not the case anymore.

I worked as a recruiter in the solar industry and residential and commercial installers with no formal education were making $65K plus. There are folks with college degrees making less. Despite pay; it was a struggle to hire and keep talent because the work wasn’t easy. BUT I witnessed many employees climb themselves out of holes if they were committed to that work. To be perfectly honest, that doesn’t seem too bad for a homeless shelter. This is sad. But there are several reasons why NYC has a housing crisis: 1. Not enough supply to keep up with demand. The population of NYC has increased to 8.5 million people. and the only new construction of homes is for wealthy investors and investment companies that buy them and add the assets to their balance sheets. 2. People who lack marketable job skills and higher education. For people who only have a high school diploma, well, an adequate paying job to support one's self, much less a family, will be virtually impossible to do. Paying rent and other expenses will also be difficult, to say the least. Of course, there is more that I can write on the housing issues in NYC.

I know it's annoying having people act like they know more than you do, but sometimes THEY DO. She says, quite casually, that people told her that he wasnt good for her and was going to get her into a bad situation. NYC is a vert, very expensive place to live for someone taking economic responsibility for their self. That little rabbit warren they were in coul easily rent for well over $2000 a month. Ant the there'd be no guarantee the landlord wouldn't double the rent or evict them at any time.

'You assume Americans are entitled to have more in the first place??' And true, these Americans live a much much better life as homeless persons than homeless persons in most other countries, even better than a lot homeful persons in a lot other countries Edited again: Unless this is not about homeless, this is wealth-transfer in the disguise of homeless Yeah, I heard three-tries before getting the shelter, only the selected ones get it Look at their situation(the pics), never had a food problem while lots of ppl in other countries who live in good houses cant afford good food Edited again: And the applications(fridge/tv/playstation/standard bed/stoves) are not really as expensive as ppl may think, 1k USD is enough to set up all of them, a bit more expensive in big cities though. And the big city is not the sustainable way, go to small cities/towns where you can get large amount of lands, so you have space for your kids to grow naturally

Until you have your own apartment that’s not a homeless shelter, be sure your girlfriend does NOT have any more babies. That’s a responsibility that’s BOTH of yours. Some women have babies so they can stay home and not work. This may not be your case. It takes TWO to make things work. Pay yourself first when you’re working. Make it a point to save. Saving gives you options for Your future. Without savings… you’ll live. Heck to check and never get anywhere. If you really read this, I wish you well.
