Dwight Howard Full Series Highlights
2009 NBA Finals
Orlando Magic vs LA Lakers
- 15.4 ppg, 15.2r, 2.2a, 1.6s, 4.0b / 49% fg, 60% ft
Although 2010-11 was Dwight at his peak, no Magic squad during his 8 seasons in Orlando got further than the 2008-09 team did. Led by the 23 year-old Dwight, Hedo Turkoglu and Rashard Lewis, the ‘09 Magic finished 3rd amidst the Eastern Conference with 59 wins. En route to the Finals, they defeated Philadelphia in 6, the reigning champion Celtics in 7, and MVP LeBron James’ Cavs in 6.
Orlando fell short of their ultimate goal, but 2009 nonetheless proved to be Dwight’s breakout campaign. It seemed he’d elevated himself from all-star level to superstar status. The high point was likely in game 6 of the ECF, dropping 40 on the Cavaliers to clinch the Magic’s 2nd ever Finals birth. He struggled offensively against the Lakers, but this wasn’t necessarily a surprise. Without a legitimate sidekick at the PF/C spot, 6’10 Dwight was forced to battle two 7-footers (Bynum & Gasol) essentially on his own. No easy buckets were given, and lots of fouls were taken. The most notable of which surfaced with 11 seconds left in the 4th quarter of game 4. Nothing but “what ifs” regarding those two free throws.
Dwight’s season was filled with much individual accomplishment. He led the NBA in rebounds and blocks per game, becoming only the 5th player in league history to lead both categories in the same season. On November 12th of ‘08, he recorded his first and only career triple double with 30 points, 19 rebounds and 10 blocks. On February 17th, Dwight became the only player ever to post at least 45 and 19 with 8 blocks in a single game (blocks counted as official statistic starting in 1973-74). He made his 3rd straight All-Star appearance, was named to his 2nd consecutive All-NBA 1st Team, and claimed his 1st of 3 Defensive Player of the Year awards.

Stan and jameer sold, hedo and Mikael folded and the lakers were just battle tested enough to beat them. Lamar helped in big spurts. Fisher hit clutch 3s. Gasol was a machine. Dwight had 3 guys plus on him ever time he touched the ball. All these other centers talk and aint carry a franchise yet. He had 20 points, but he had 30% efficiency or maybe even below. That's not good. Pau was also extremely inefficient in that game soo it's not Kobe who played bad in that game 7, but all of them because that was insanee game defensively all the time. Kobe was the best player all the time. And all those players are ROLE players, just role players and that's it.

Idk if you were watching the NBA back then or not but this Orlando team was actually built on three point shooting, one of the first teams structured that way. No one was running 4 out with a team full of shooters and one post before this, other than the Suns with Nash and Dantoni. Also on feeding Dwight on the low post, it definitely worked. They were competitive because of it. Which is why I hate that he got a reputation for not being good at it and people wanted him to play like non superstar bums like DJ and just set screens all game

Basketball is a team game which requires cooperation and intellect . Dwight did not bother to develop a go to post move that enables him to score at will. Yes he decided to put his God damn ego aside when he joined the Lakers and I'm glad that he finally won his first chip. But is he the go to centre in the game like Hakeem , Shaq , Robinson , Ewing ? @@dcshow I think Dwight Howard did his best in that year’s playoffs, but it was kind of difficult for any center to take on Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum at the same time, maybe he needed another good center for help like Yao Ming if he doesn’t have injuries.

People act like the Lakers were stacked but looking back he did carry them. Pau was soft and wouldn't have been a hall of Famer without Kobe. Bynum had great potential but not great production those two years, Odom was good but not consistent and Fisher was average and they had good role players but Kobe did carry them

Well that "soft" 7 footer did a fine job defensively on Howard. A better job than Big Ben and Varejao in the previous round, both of whom were much better defenders than Gasol.

Man I swear if vangudy had played Gortot on the floor with Howard that shit would've went completely different. Dwight Howard was a fucking monster and they had to play a lineup of damn near 4 seven footers to stop him. He tried his best but Gasol, Bynum, Artest, Odom and kobe were too tall of a team for him to beat.

Love prime Dwight but if you swapped him out for prime Shaq, do they win more games and maybe even take the series? I know Bynum & Gasol did a great job on him but a part of me also feels he was somewhat passive & settled for the foul. I feel Prime Shaq would have dunked a lot more of those opportunities that Dwight went up weak for. I could be wrong 🤷🏽‍♂️
