Michael is very competitive. He also just embarrassed himself in front of that entire crowd. Then his employee, a guy he just said he was mentoring, comes up and outdoes him by giving one of the greatest acceptance speeches ever. I don't think Michael was trying to abandon Dwight, after all he covered for Dwight when he was too nervous to go up on stage. But afterwards Michael was so humiliated that he couldn't stand to be in that room any longer. It was sad that he couldn't be happy for Dwight, but his competitive nature prevented that. Michael thinks "Dwight did better than me." and gets upset. But I'm glad Michael showed some vulnerability here, these kinds of personality flaws are what make the characters human. There's a little bit of Michael in all of us.

@@user-gz1uw4gs4d Look at it from Dwight's perspective there. Dwight is panicking over his speech and michael saves him by going on the stage. Maybe he did it initially because he wanted the attention...but once he started bombing he seemed really happy to finally leave the stage. He failed on stage but he at least reasures himself by saying that it's a tough crowd. So when Dwight succeeds that removes any excuses for Michael. Since Dwight was panicking at the idea of bombing in front of that audience...He would probably understand why Michael reacted poorly to bombing in front of that audience, especially after how arrogant he was about it. More importantly he would understand that it had nothing to do with Michael disliking him. someone doing good things despite themselves is a lot easier to hate than someone doing bad things despite themselves. Michael would be the latter.

Not only the years we've been at war, the war of work, but from the moment as a child when we realized that the world could be conquered. It has been a lifetime struggle. A never-ending fight. I say to you, and you will understand that it is a privilege to fight! We are warriors! Salesmen of north-eastern Pennsylvania, I ask you once more: Rise and be worthy of this historical hour! No revolution is worth anything unless it can defend itself! Some people will tell you salesman is a bad word. They'll conjure up images of used car dealers and door to door charlatans. This is our duty: to change their perception. I say salesmen... and women of the world unite! We must never acquiesce for it is together, TOGETHER, THAT WE PREVAIL! My English teacher assigned us a "one-pager" (a singular page filled with symbols to represent the topic) and you are required to write a rhetorical analysis on that specific topic on a separate page. The topic for this assignment was a speech, and of course, she gives us a list of the greatest 100 speeches in history. She also adds that any speech is allowed, as long it is run by her. In mere milliseconds, my mind lands on this episode, and I get the transcript of his glorious speech. My teacher gives me the green light, and let me tell you, I will make Dwight Shrute proud.

A lot of what made this show so great (especially early on) was in the subtle things. Best example of it here is Mochael going to do his robot impersonation by covering thebmic with two hands, but then realizing he needs a limb part-way through for the visual. I feel like those sorts of 'mistakes' (intentional or not) are details that couldn't possibly be written in the script. And they do a great job of making the show feel a little more organic & real, even in a situation/setup as ridiculous as this.
