DR Congo has one of the best leagues in Africa too, with Mazembe and Vita Club being amongst one of the most successful clubs in Africa.

This was a surprisingly eye opening video, i learnt a fair bit, nicely done DW!

Good report. But I was expecting to see Zamalek name when you talk about African clubs and popularity. I support Egypt but always enjoy the talents of Algerian, Moroccan, Ghana, Nigeria and Cameroon players as well

The DR Congo has contributed a lot to football. Players like kompany, mbemba, wan bissaka, mandanda. It’s a long list I can’t name them all. They all play it top leagues around the globe. The top 3 to be exact. The problem is the Congolese football association. Look at France and Belgian teams and you will see the amount of players with ties to the DRC. The problem is no player wants to play for a country with no structure. Plus the way in which the country is looked at by western countries is not appealing. Just search any African country and say players who could play for them, you would be surprised.

The issue with African countries winning the Afcon Tournament more than other countries, is not the size of the west Africans or the technical Abilities of the North Africans, the main reason is the Investment in football from a young age, that certain countries do that others don't do, I'm from Eastern Africa in Mozambique, my country has many talent but the government doesn't invest in the youth, that's why my country doesn't do nothing in football, my country has produced talent like Eusebio that played for Benfica of Lisbon, he was one of the Best players at the time and who invested in him was the former colonial power Portugal, if the reason for success was the size of West Africans I can bet that Cameroon or Nigeria would have more tittles than Egypt, but it's not that it's investment from a young age that's the secret.

First of all great piece. It really tried to give an elaborate explanation as to why certain regions don't excell in football while others do. I'm a Kenyan and I'll try as much as possible to debunk some of the myths why Kenya is currently not reffered to as an African Powerhouse. Well first and foremost Kenya has always been and still is a sporting Nation with Kenya being represented in almost all sports. Rugby, Athletics, Cricket, Volleyball, Basketball, Football, Tennis etc. However, lets stick to football. Kenya has qualified for AFCON 6 times 1972, 1988, 1990, 1992, 2004, 2019. The first 4 times only 8 nations used to qualify. So we were a big team if we consider the number of teams that qualified. Now there's a reason for that. And just by the way Uganda reached the final of Afcon 1978 and lost to Ghana 2-0.There was a period East Africa was dominant. Gor Mahia which is the most successful club in Kenya with 19 titles is the only team in East Africa to have won a continental title in 1987 and was also the first in East and Central Africa to do so against Esperance de Tunis and in that year two Kenyans Peter Dawo and Ambrose Ayoyi were named in the top 10 best players, in fact, Dawo scored 10 goals in that campaign. Other teams such as Tusker FC formerly known as The Kenya Breweries, reached the final of the CAF Cup winners Cup in 1994 but lost to DC Motemba Pembe and if you look at the history of the continental club competitions in the 80s and early 90s, Kenyan teams regularly featured in the latter stages of the competitions. In the 70s up till the 90s, regional club football was taken seriously in this part of the continent with the CECAFA club championship being the creme dela dreme of club football and between 1977-1987 Kenyan teams won all but one regional club title which was dubbed the Cecafa Club Championship and in 1988, CAF Cup Winners Cup could have potentially have had an all Kenyan final were it not for African politics where Gor Mahia was denied a training pitch for 3 days when they face Inter Club of Congo and AFC Leopards, Kenya's 2nd most dominant club, were knocked out in controvesial circumstances against Diamant of Cameroon. The reason why Kenya was strong in the 80s and 90s is because the government had established centres of excellence in various regions in the country and the players from those centres were really talented and skilled and hence why Kenya was dominant up till 1992. However, systems grow when you inject new ideas and that is what Kenya failed to do and the centres were eventually closed. Albeit, Kenya still produced good players and teams in the 90s and this was witnessed when the Kenya Breweries reached the final of the Cup winners cup in 1994 but lost. What absolutely impeded the growth of football was the 1996 AFCON. Kenya was slated to host that edition but due to politics in the country the rights were snatched away from us by CAF and handed to SA and Kenya was subsequently handed a two year ban which resulted in us missing the 96 and 98 AFCON editions only to make a comeback in 2004. From that period, no concrete investment has been made in football and sports in general with many parents discouraging their children from pursuing any sports as a profession. In fact sports is only regarded as a hobby and is seldom taken seriously in Kenya. We don't have proper youth structures in Kenya across all sports and if Athletics was a team sport, there's a high possibility that we wouldn't be as good as we are at the moment. Lack of investment, poor leadership in the early 2000s to 2010 ocassioned by wrangles within the federation stunted our growth and even after the wrangles, the subsequent leaders have not provided visionary leadership to take us back to our glory days. The few individuals who have made it from Kenya for example Wanyama, Mariga, Oliech, Olunga just to name a few, have been extremely disciplined because it was all down to sheer luck. They did not get the best preparations but due to their passion and love for football, they managed to progress their careers and rub shoulders with the best in the European continent. If sports was economically viable and promising in the country, we would invest our time, money and effort into it but it really isn't. Kenya has a vibrant economy and other sectors are more lucrative than sports so hence the reason why we don't invest in sports. The notion Sports is a hobby or a pass time engagement has massively hindered the growth of sports and football in this case and until we get rid of that notion, we will continue sinking in the depths of despair when it comes to football.

Kenya is not about ambition as the Nigerian said. here, its an issue of systems. there is no established youth system and the good players we used to see in high school decide to drop out of the sport as there are better career options than football in Kenya. add to that the mismanagement of funds by the football bodies in Kenya, it makes football nothing but a last ditch career option unless they can secure their way out of Kenya while young. We have talented footballers but the football body only cares about the money they get from FIFA and enriching themselves.

In Southern Africa football as a sport is competing with many other sporting codes. As opposed to North and West Africa were the main sporting codes are football followed by basketball 🤷🏽‍♂️

Great Documentary Dw. From a Kenyan Perspective, I would say that their is talent in abundance in our country but the main issues are lack of structure ( scouting, football pitch), too much football politics be it in management ,team selection and running of our almost dying league there is also an issue of sports as hobbies and not serious careers leading to a blaise' attitude moreso in football where there is close to no success story for inspiration. Lastly their is a saying amongst football fans in my country...If you want to see serious football go to the village and grassroots there is something serious there unfortunately there has never been any serious scouting done to tap these individual they end up hanging their playing boots quite early to feed their families.

This Documentary is very thought-provoking but has lots of proven facts in it. I will be more upset if I wasn't from Ghana and Nigeria.

The Al Ahly fans and their passion @ 11:33 while watching a training session is amazing. I can't believe the pressure an Al Ahly player must face. If you don't put in 100% effort, there is no way such a committed fan base doesn't notice. For youngsters, it must be intimidating but ultimately rewarding if you manage to break through. Big ups to them.

Great piece at chasing shadows. All arguments made do not make sense. Each region in Africa has a sport they excel in. East Africa excels in athletics, volleyball, hockey and rugby. East African teams especially from Kenya dominate these fields. South Africans have excelled in Rugby and cricket. My point is, lack of motivation cannot be a factor why Kenya does not excel in football and Nigeria does. That would also means that a lack of ambition makes West Africa not excel in Rugby or athletics. As I said, this piece was very excellent at explaining nothing and chasing shadows.

I am speaking for my very own country the DR Congo 🇨🇩. Speaking of brave and ambitious, Congolese could easily the bravest of all African. One thing not mentioned is that, sadly the most talented players from countries such as Dr Congo prefer to represent European nations such as Belgium and France.

Except for Amine El Amri’s take, I found most of the commenters' reasonings biased. Saying the average Kenyan isn’t ambitious than the average Nigerian is just too gross generalization!

I'm an avid watcher of AFCON I love the physicality and competitiveness. Proper football warriors.

African football is as diverse and beautiful as it’s many nations. Imagine if the likes of Zidane, Pogba, Mbappe, Saka, Lukaku, Benzema and many, many more had chose to represent their African countries? This video would have a different tone to it. Seeing France win the 2018 FIFA World Cup with a squad that was predominantly 80% African was bittersweet. It was as much a win for Africa as it was a loss, as this only goes to perpetuate the desire of players with African ties to represent European countries as they seem to have a better chance of winning on the world stage.

I think you should also talk about DRcongo, we have one of the best league in Africa, in fact only our clubs compete with the north, for example TP Mazembe comes second after Al haly of Egypt, and all our 5 major teams have atleast a continental trophy, the clubs are prospering because private organizations are investing in, the national team is at the image of our country, luck of organization, our best players don’t want to come to play for the national team…we could have a very strong team with players like Lukaku, kimpembe, kompany, Bashuayi, tielmans, Christopher Nkunku… all of them rejected the national team cause of a lack of organization but the talent is there…football is the major sport.

As a Kenyan and football lover I would say Culture, Mentality and Politics are the big issues here. Well as much as I would like to acknowledge physique I have to say it's laughable; for God's sake Senegalese 'giants' were well matched by 'minions' Japan in the 2018 WC with a 2-2 scoreline. Technique and skill is everything. In Kenya, culture is the biggest impediment; generally people don't value it as much--hence the low investments and mismanagement.
