Access to clean water may be a right, but it's often hard to come by. Contaminated water kills. Henry Othieno and Saudah Birungi have developed eco-friendly filters for use in schools and homes. They turn dirty lake water into drinking water.

mismanagement man. These charities would rather spend 1300 on a week's worth of bottled water than put effort into creating a good water system for the same amount. When your business is giving away money and you get a percentage of that money your goal is to git rid of it a quickly as possible whether or not it does any good.

@Sum Dup Depends. You have Red Cross in Germany that ensures shelter for hundreds of thousands of people, free clothing for homeless, poor meals, kindergartens, financial aid for poor families, old people's homes for people with low pensions and so on.

Granite only creates the conditions for elimination of germs, we us it because it has particular properties that are useful for this purpose and its not just a mechanical process, it is mainly a biological one. I would also not say that the people without clean water somehow worry about carbon emissions but rather us trying to provide the safe water they don't have without endangering the environment.

It’s an emotional grift. Someone most likely got public funds or grant in the name of “green renewable deal” and that’s the “economic development project” that made it all compliant. They need to put them in a well with a solar powered pump and/or hand pump and they might not even need a filter. But then they’ll need some guns and ammo to prevent whoever will want to seize it and claim it as there’s. They might want to start with the “innovative green technology” first...

Very little competition and the fact that areas are isolated means this filtering firm can charge prices similarly to a monopolist. Furthermore, higher transportation costs due to poor infrastructure in Uganda lead to higher input prices.

This is a great idea but I wonder if granite and other sediment is enough to filter out pathogens? It seems like it only removes the large dirt and dust particles giving the water its yellow color but I can’t imagine all germs being removed by a simple filtration process

Initially yes - if it's fine enough. But it reaches saturation very quickly. There's a reason activated charcoal filters are used by practically everyone.

In many of the small railway stations located far away from towns , the staff had a problem if clean drinking water, so they had a system of filtering water . They had a wooden or bamboo stand on which three water pots were placed,filled with cinder or burnt coal on top pot,while sand was filled in middle pot and the cleaned water used to be percolated to the bottom-most pot .

Ths seed pods of the moringa tree can also be used to purify water, after the oil ahas been pressed out. I saw a video of them doing that in Senegal.

@@ShayaqRaza In water treatment plants the sand filters are meant to filter out the larger impurities of the treated water but the main fogginess of the water is removed with coagulation and there must always be disinfection of the water.

I like the idea of planting "Muringa" tree or "Drum Stick Tree" whenever a plant is installed. The leaves of the are one of the best source of Iron, which is very essential for young girls and mothers to avoid Anemia. The leaves can be just boiled with salt and sauteed with grated coconut and it tastes great. They can also boil the leaves and make tea / soup out of it. Same goes with the vegetables and flowers of this tree. A staple here in South India and easy food to consume. Kudos to the thinkers!

@@bhson95 granite contains of silica, alumina, pottasium oxide, etc. Each of this chemical component has their own characteristic, they contribute to the properties of the granite it self based on how much the composition. And chemistry could find out about that

1200 dollars for a membranfilterset, that costs normaly under 100( maybee 150 with instalation parts) ? ??? !!!! I think the report has not shown the proceeding in the minest : 1)First filter the water rough of most of the greater particles(sandfilters etc/mechanical filters) 2) then put some mealen Moringaseeds into this pseudoclean water, that will bind the finer particles, and also transformes some of the soluted elements also in massives, so that they can be divided from the water ....

You can make an even better filter using a large PVC pipe then use granite, sand and activated charcoal for a perfect filter.

Fantastic but.. The normal water treatment in Europe uses the same method but in a larger scale-infiltration dams. You build it up with layers of sand and drain the cleaned water after passing the sand.

In India a college student has developed a portable water cleaning device that clean water on the spot, you just need a plastic bottle on which that filter will be placed. The best thing about that filter is that you can purify 20L of water with a single piece and the cost of a single piece is Rs 20 ($0.25 US) which I believe is very cheap.

I've seen a project where they kept water in transparent plastic bottles for several hours in direct sunlight (which they have plenty during the day in those regions, and the UV light killed most of the pathogenic germs. This simple and cheap method maybe could be used as a pre-purification step to make those filters last longer.

Really wish there were more news like this. I live in Norway, where the tap water is so good that they put it in bottles and sell it in restaurants around the world for almost the price of wine. Voss is a place an hour or two away from where I live.

Is that filter kills bacteria? Even if the water looks clear bacterias still will be there in that water. They must boil that water after filtering.

These kinds of filters won't take out HMs or toxins once they get past a certain saturation. Even then they still leave some things in solution. They also still make it look clean long after it's still passing nasties through so maintenance is essential.

The thing about most innovators in Africa is no matter how small, they share their process and methods to help the world not just buying patents and making sure people have no access to the technology just as some "people" did with the covid-19 vaccine.

i hope you bring them birth control, too, and messages about how overpopulation is ruining the world and how it can lead to starvation and war. You are saving lives without considering how to handle an increased population. Will those you save end up dying anyway from the things I mentioned? Will they end up invading Europe like so many Africans now do? Telling people not to have so many kids isn't heroic, is it? It is a message that is resented. But, it is truth.
