The motor is brushless with electronic control similar to stepper/servo motors used in robotics. The motor stops and then indexes to parallel retract position to stow it.

The batteries are likely in tracks in the wing rather than use water ballast and can be externally charged too.

this glider is one of the most advanced and expensive gliders in the world. You can buy different gliders that cost less or buy a used. But the most inexpenive way to fly gliders is to go to a flight club

I think they actually do good. 250.000/25 are 10.000 per employee per month. In addition, they are also selling the engines "without" a plane, so just the propeller for example. Also they are a maintenance organisation and have a good reputation, at least in Germany.

Who doesn't? But even if you don't have a quarter of a million euros you can go fly using hardly any fuel. With the right weather and a bit of practice you can fly for hours with just a couple of minutes begind a towplane or a tiny bit of fuel for a winch (some even have electric motors). Actually they are Bruce, remember that Wind is causes by heating in one place and cooling in another and the displacement of Air between , thus moving air stream which collides with a Mountain or coastal ridge and is forced upwards can and in fact is created by thermal activity.

+mozzmann We were talking about thermals. Sustained winds that cause mountain waves and ridge lifts area caused by air pressure differentials, not updrafts. Wind is caused by a complex process of pressure differentials, difference in air temperature on different regions of the planet, the coriolis effect, the ocean is not considered terrain and yet has a huge effect on weather. Falling rain causes winds, that's not the heating of terrain. Yes I am aware of the fact that the sun fuels the weather on earth, but it's not because of thermals. Heating of air is one thing, a rising bubble of air known as a thermal is another. I studied weather back in 1980 when I started flying sailplanes, I know all about thermals, mountain waves and ridge lift.

+Bruce Yes but the Wind as we know it IS created by Thermal activity pure and simple , ie Temperature difference from place to place creating a pressure difference and thus wind. This is a pressure difference and that is initiated by thermal activity that translates to a wind or more correctly an air mass moving from one place to another and if there is a mountain range of coastal ridge then low level lift is created. Mountain wave is similarly created by Thermal activity and then enhanced by it where the pressure ridge forces the air mass upwards BUT that air mass cools and descends and depending on the range can bounce from the valley floor picking up more thermal energy because it triggers more thermal activity ( sometimes you can have an Air mass that is hot and wants to rise but there is a cold layer above that stops it , ann then you get a wave bouncing then trigger's this additional rising air that adds to the wave propagation gaining more height. This is why sometimes when you see Lenni's or Lenticular cloud formations they can often be seen stacked up 4 or 5 and well away from the actual mountain range as well This is ALL created by Thermal activity which can be a localised like a whirl Wind too a reasonable "thermal" any thing up to 300Ft to 1000 Ft across to a thermal mass over the state of Texas drawing in air in the afternoon ie generating a wind from the Gulf of Mexico drawing in moisture and can create storms too. A classic example would be the " Fremantle Doctor" in West Australia , it is ALL created by thermal activity or temperature difference. You need to go back to Soaring school

+Chuck Croston Speak for yourself, do some fact checking. Mountain waves and ridge lift are absolutely riding the wind. The wind is going up faster than the sailplane is coming down, if that's not riding I don't know what is.

And what happens if there is no mountain or ridge there. What is the wind going to do for you than? 3 types of lift, thermal, wave or mountain/ridge. Wind is a component of the last 2 but you are not riding the wind itself. The lift is produced by the wind being deflected up the ridge or mountain. And that is also why you never fly on the opposite side of the mountain from the direction of the wind as it then has turned into sink and you sure are not riding sink.

BTW, wave lift is different than mountain or ridge lift. Wave soaring is a completely different type of soaring than ridge lift flying is. Look up a guy named Balleka on hefe, he has plenty of videos of him riding ridge lift produced by wind. But with out the ridge he would not be staying up where be is flying.

I know what ridge lift is, I know what wave lift is, also know as mountain wave lift. I know what thermals are. I've know all of that stuff for 35 years. I know that mountain wave lift and ridge lift is definitely riding the wind. Call it what you want, but I know what it is. A sailplane is riding in an ocean of air and if the ocean of air is going up faster than the sailplane is descending you go up. You are riding wind. If you airspeed is 100 knots and you are going into a 120knot wind you are going backwards over the ground at 20knots, again you are riding the wind. A thermal is the same, it's air that's rising faster than the sailplane is descending you are riding the wind. I agree sailplanes are not powered by the wind, they are powered by gravity, but they absolutely are riding the wind.

To use your example of flying backwards which I have done myself in a 1-26. A Super blanik L23 lifts off at about 35 knots more or less. If you have a head on wind of 40 knots and you are sitting in the Blanik on the ground; what happens?

yes they can, I came to see this electric drive because the gas ones sometimes don't start and then you basically have a giant spoiler deployed. There has been a few pilots who deploy to low and then end up dying when the motor doesn't start. I'd rather have my exit strategy planned rather than relying on tech to save my butt.

weight is a good thing for better glide. think like this: you throw a cotton ball in to the wind; you throw a baseball in to the wind. think about the result. Ballast is a common thing in gliders. Built in with the batteries plus it provides the self launch. no brainer.

Tom Kelsall nope, there’s these columns of rising air called thermals that can keep gliders in the air for hours. When you fly on airplanes and hit turbulence, you are flying through thermals. There’s also mountain waves that have brought gliders up past 50k feet with no motor power! Gliding is an incredible way to fly.
