A gigantic flying boat from Soviet times could bring tourists flocking to the Caspian Sea. Even if the 'monster' no longer flies, it is still very impressive.

Huge capacity for it's speed, hard to get detected by both sonar and radar since it fly close to the surface. And it's amphibious. Sadly, it can't be used in the ocean if there is any big waves. So while it is still useful as a landing craft and a damn good one at that, it can't be used as a combat vessel as some design intend it to be.
@NozomuYume
@NozomuYume 3 жыл бұрын
It does have the advantage of being a mobile platform on a large inland sea -- the Caspian Sea is basically tailor made for an Ekranoplan. Back when Iran was a US ally, the Soviet Union had serious concerns about the US staging troops across the Caspian, and using small/medium ships to attack and take Baku, cutting off oil supply and acting as a staging ground for pincer attacks against Tblisi from Turkey and amphibious attacks to create a beachhead to advance on Stalingrad/Volgograd -- essentially a more direct version of what Germany tried to do from the west with less risk of having supply lines cut off. But really an Ekranoplan could serve as a mobile weapons platform on any large body of water that's shielded from ocean waves. You could use it on the Great Lakes or San Francisco Bay, for instance. The Soviet Union could have used it as a strike force across the Mediterranean from their base in Syria as long as the weather wasn't bad. Heck even the Gulf of Mexico is calm much of the time -- they could have launched these from western Cuba to strike across the American south (though this would have been strongly limited by weather and be mostly useless during storm season).

Good report. One thing: The "Caspian Sea Monster" was the KM Ekranoplan, which operated from 1966 to 1980 & crashed in the Caspian on a test flight. This sank soon afterwards & was never recovered (too heavy, expensive). This is the Lun Ekranoplan, the only one of its class, which was designed using many lessons from the KM. With 6x Moskit Anti Shipping Missiles along it's spine, it could move at over 300mph, which would have been a very pontent threat if it became operational. The short wings though, didn't generate much lift, so it was restricted to 2-3m above the waves. Anthing more that a little choppiness of the sea state would effectively ground the Lun. It still was a superb feat of engineering for sure. Very impressive & I'm glad this one survives.
