Docks, or dochans as they are known in Orkney, have wind-blown seeds which give a rusty red colour on animal fibres )including silk). As this dye needs no mordanting or fixing, it is ideal as an introduction to natural dyeing. As the leaves of the dochan are edible, it is quite safe to do the dyeing in your kitchen. This is an ideal introduction to dyeing for adults and children, but make sure children are supervised, due to the boiling water involved.
