Why do you have to mark that you are an organ donor? Isn´t it automatically when you die that you are an organ donor? Edit: I did research and apparently it is very uncommon to be automatically an organ donor when you die - which is, to be honest, rather shocking. There are "opt-out" and "opt-in" countries. In the USA you have to opt in. Here in Austria you have to opt out if you don´t want your organs donated. If you go skiing in the alps and die and you didn´t sign a legal document (or your family says no) your organs will be donated if they are needed. I thought that this would be like that everywhere, but the world is dissapointing me yet again.

@@NezumiEfeu it'd be weird to give out someone's organs if they don't opt for that ... Especially with a lot of the religious diversity we have in the US.

There's danger in getting any surgery. She's a mother. She was scared. What if she died on the table and the suffering was her own children? It's easy to moralize how someone should do something dangerous for the benefit of others, but I doubt you're volunteering to undergo risky surgery to give up a chunk of your liver for strangers.

That scene where the dad walked into the room to see all the volunteers, that is true America right there. All people regardless of race or creed coming together to do the simple human act of helping their fellow man. No other country on the planet could claim such a thing. These days, I think that scene is less and less likely due to so many divisions by our politicians and corporations.

Do the surgery! I used to be absolutely terrified of anything medical - missed out on my hep b injections because I hyperventilated and tried to swing at the nurse 🙄 I ended up having surgery after surgery and care after care for conditions. One condition and procedure is responsible for finding an issue and saving my life. My advice for anyone - get your vaccines, always get checked out, ladies have your Pap smears (it’s because I’ve had annual Pap smears twice they caught and excised cancerous tissue and I’m FINE) and never delay those who can help you and save your life. They have therapists to talk to. Topical numbing agents (unless you have Ehlers-Danlos like me and lots of those don’t work) for injections, lidocaine for anything topical but invasive and anaesthetic for other procedures. Sometimes as simple as sedatives. The patient experience isn’t always bad and if you’re open and honest about your fear they take care of you. I’m an old hand now and they can do anything to me and I can deal with it EXCEPT endoscopic procedures down my throat. Last time I cried and confessed ahead of time. They super extra sedated me and did it via my nose to make it easier for me. It was so much better even though I had a nosebleed. But they took my greatest fear and showed me they’re listening and willing to help me through them.

I still have a really hard time understanding the stigma and selfishness against organ donation. Unless it of course, benefits the person in time of THEIR emergency. I would regularly give part of me, blood or liver, but since they don't know what's medically wrong with me, I can't, without knowing if I could pass something on to others. I mean, even when it's when the person is dead. You're dead. You don't need them. Let someone else use them to live, be their life. Maybe that's just me though, I don't know.

To be fair that was his only option in having a way to save her even tho he would be on bed rest she had more of a chance to live with the choices he decided. Which I think is pretty realistic. There are to many single mother and fathers with sick children who only have them, and not throwing in other family members to randomly support is sad but a very real life situation for many young kids. There’s been many situations were a family member donates a nonvital organ to family, they will almost always be sent home a nurse that’s visits even if they have other people in the home depending on age and how the organ is affecting their body.
