It sounds like he talks more about the tires he likes and how testing has shown what is faster, wide, lower pressure...I don't hear him mention any specifically that he hates outside the initial discussion of old narrow road tires. But I guess HATES in the title gets more viewers.

For the road I have tried everything from 23mm to 32mm. The optimal in my opinion is 28mm. The next big thing for the non racer or pro is durability and puncture resistance. Its all very well having a « fast tyre » but if you spend half your ride up on the verge repairing punctures you arent going very far.
@veganpotterthevegan
@veganpotterthevegan 10 ай бұрын
Durability means less supple tires. Everyone wants a compliant ride, even people that don't race. Making fast tires more puncture resistant would be great but that normally means thin rubber if you care about compliance
@richeeg3271

Isn't going wider going to fix most of puncture issues?
@veganpotterthevegan
@veganpotterthevegan 10 ай бұрын
@richeeg3271 it depends. Some companies make their wider road tires thinner than their narrower tires. The means the sealant creates a thinner plug. Not a big deal with lower pressure but you still wind up with a thin tire that won't take more mileage. Before going tubeless, I trained on conti 4 seasons and the 28s lasted a good 500-800 more miles than 25s. I'm not finding that to be true going from 28s to 30s and 32s. And as the tire gets thinner, I'm more likely to need to use a plug for holes that would have sealed when the tire was new

Bit of a generalization... It depends heavily on the surface. I tested 32mm slicks and 35mm cross tires over a 35K gravel course and 32s were almost 1.5 min faster with identical power output. But that's with good hard packed gravel roads... so yeah, depends on the surface, wider is definitely not always faster!

You’ll also want to keep in mind that a wider tire requires a corresponding wider rim for aerodynamics.

No pros are opting for anything wider than 32-33 mm at eg Strade Bianche. At gravel races with higher speed and smoother conditions eg Gravel WC 2022 in Italy several pros opted for 33-35 mm. Then at tougher courses eg UEC Gravel European Championship 2023 many of the best go for tyres at around 40 mm. Personally I wouldn’t have minded a little more volume on the rougher descents but overall 40-42 mm felt like the fastest choice and I really didn’t see any +45 mm although I looked hard. Then on very hard courses surely it makes sense to go to MTB sized tyres but then it also makes sense to go for suspension which no one uses on easier courses.

If anyone is claiming that racers used 21 / 19 mm 20 years ago, you're just dead wrong. Everyone was on 23mm around 20 years ago. 19/21mm is something from 30 years ago when steel frames helped dampen out the 140 psi. Once everyone was on aluminium, I didn't see 19/21mm anymore. Anyway, I agree with Dylan that many current gravel tyres are still too narrow. Anything under 40mm is still usable, especially for shorter rides, but it's just less comfortable.
@cvdavis

Not true. My friend was a pro team lead rider and used super narrow tires with hard pressures. Not that long ago.

Up until a few years ago bike stores still sold 19s for road bikes, so people definitely still used them. I dont ride anything lower than 28s but because i like my upper body muscles and will never weight less than 85kgs, on ideal conditions the thinner tire are faster, cycling is just accommodating for all these corrupt woke governments that don't even fix the roads anymore

This efficiency thing has taken the fun out of cycling. Just go out and jump on the pedals and blow yourself up then hobble home. Who cares how fast it rolls if when you accelerate and climb out of the saddle it feels like there's a ball and chain hanging off the back of the bike. Low pressure is boring. So is optimum cadence.
