One weird disc golf drill to add distance (using a hammer) | Physics of Form Ep. 5

For this episode of Physics of Form Danny Lindahl helps Anthony add distance and consistency to his backhand form with a drill to help make the throw feel more natural. Using a hammer to add weight to the swing, feeling how your arm reacts to being less tense while throwing can help add a lot of distance!

Anthony's form looked SO MUCH BETTER using this method. Add to that the fact that he says he didn't feel like he had to exert as much effort as before I feel like if he dialed this in he could add serious distance to his throws while also reducing energy exerted and wear on his body. ANTHONY. KEEP DOING THIS.

This is similar to something I heard Simon say in an old clinic video. He said let your arm stay completely loose and let timing and rotation do the work. Your arm naturally comes into the power pocket and snaps out. I’ve been doing this and went from trying super hard to get an inconsistent 400ft to hardly doing anything to get 400ft consistently with good accuracy. Also something I realized that really helped me stay consistent and get more power is that my grip is focused through my ring finger then middle and pointer do some grip and take care of stabilizing. I could cut my pinky off and it wouldn’t change my game. Focusing my grip that way seems to give better energy transfer from my body to the disc. And I always know when I did it right bc I can feel the disc slide out of my hand. It’s a weird feeling that almost seems like my fingers stay hooked on the disc too long. Hope this helps someone and would love to know if Danny gives the grip a try!

Great video. Really like the little debunking of straight pull-back - I've found DG like a lot of sports is trying to create the brew of a straight back to front momentum yet also rotating, both at the same time. By using the hammer you are keeping the rotation machine humming. By delaying the reach back a bit, you are preventing either a) rounding when trying to incorporate this into the hammer rotation or b) defusing the rotation by reverting to a more straight back to front only. On a less preventative but more positive note, I think in essence the slight delay is also creating almost a mini-circle of hand elbow rotation motion that on a macro level should be straight back to front - but now with lag, that when combined with trunk rotation is generating a lot of power. Now just got to keep the disc angle and feet on schedule. Thanks for the video.

Gave this a try and got my release to have a bit more snap, I feel way better about my release point - way less shanking into the woods! Distance is still holding at a 250 average with an occasional accidental 290, but at least it feels easier after the hammer drill.

Interested in whether this would increase rounding, definitely seems to be increasing the chance of that. Or is it risk/reward
@docv73
@docv73 2 жыл бұрын
It shouldn't. Having the disc/hammer the proper distance away from the chest, and a forced (from the weight) follow through just looks like a rounding issue. "Pulling" the disc is more likely to cause rounding, because to "pull" in a "straight line" while rotating and shifting weight requires you to continually change the direction of the disc, moving it around your rotating body, to get the "straight line," and it involves shoulder and back muscles that are hard to get to STOP at the right moment. You are likely to round, and it's harder to get snap. If you hold the disc in front of you, in the power pocket, and "karate chop," that is the disc golf throw. Rotate back and "karate chop" out as your rotation peaks, that is the reach back. Rotating forward again, with a relaxed arm should ALLOW the arm to tuck it back into the power pocket - proverbial lag. Then "karate chop" out as your rotation forward passes the power pocket is the throw. The release should be slight out in front/away from you, at 10 o'clock. The momentum should then lead to a follow through. This hammer drill he's doing uses the weight of the hammer to exaggerate the sensation of how that should work and feel. Part of that is the 90 degree elbow/forearm and 90 degree at the shoulder. If that is correct the disc should be further out in front of you than what feels natural. But it also allows you to stay more relaxed, and allows you to feel the release point, which should be in about that 10 o'clock position. The weight of the hammer tries to use newton's law to continue moving in a straight line, so at the peak of the arm extension it meets resistance from the arm and feels heaviest as it tries to pull free. THAT point is the release point, and at that point the disc should pull itself free from the grip. If it's done right the only thing that can mess it up is trying to force the timing and release early, instead of letting that point of max weight force the disc out of the grip, or grip locking. When switching from the hammer to a disc, add to this drill holding the disc with only your thumb and one or two fingers, so it's almost impossible to grip lock, but with that weakened grip TRY to hold on to it. At the peak, when the disc/hammer try to continue straight, but your arm runs out of extension it will snap free, and your rotating body will create the follow through. There shouldn't be any rounding. It might look like it because the arm/disc are so far out in front, but everything should move in a straight line, so it LOOKS LIKE a "pull." The weight of the hammer, and the weakened wrist/ grip from the two finger drill also let you feel the disc/hammer force the wrist to cock as the reach back stops and the body rotates, changing the direction of the disc to moving forward, creating lag in your arm AND wrist. That cocked wrist will add the extra little pop at the end of the extension, like a bull whip. That last little extension is the proverbial snap. Reaching that elbow extension from a "chop" creates a solid stop point, whereas a "pull" with your shoulders softens that point and creates rounding. All of that is easier to feel and understand with the hammer.

This was a drill to correct a mistake, not teach from the ground up. Rounding is incredibly common from people who don't have a base of form knowledge, but not Anthony's issue so I took a different approach from a well established teacher. Spin and throw focuses on spinning as fast as possible and I wholeheartedly disagree with that premise. He didn't invent that idea, he's just taking a small part of the throw and focusing entirely too much on it and causing rounding in more people than he's helping.
@michaelgollin7853
@michaelgollin7853 2 жыл бұрын
He admits he didn't invent it but he has broken the backhand down and put together a teaching method and drills to help people. I came from a ultimate background been playing a long time but was always capped on distance. I did reach a 900 rating and have won tournaments in different divisions. Play masters now. Tried to rework my throw and completely lost my swing. Went back to only mids for awhile. Anyway I think he makes some good points and has good video breakdowns of pros.

@@michaelgollin7853 He has some good points but gets a bit lost in the sauce if you know what I mean. He cultivates a very close minded community and seems to have a "I'm the only one correct" mentality. The parts of value can be found from less toxic places, and the rest is just wrong.
