They need to attach Bao Sanniang to Guan Yinping.. She can still have her infatuation with Guan Suo, but I would write her as being lifelong friends with Yinping.. And whilst Yinping is growing stronger, Sanniang feels she is weaker than her friend and fights to grow stronger and prove her worth

Zhen Ji- They made her too codependent of Cao Pi. Kinda of like those married couples where one of the spouses loses their hobbies and interests because they're too focused on their spouse's.

Bao Sanniang is a character that has a lot of potential! In DW9, in the Capture of Chengdu she defended the first gate and I remember her being harder to defeat than Lu Bu. She should have a more significant role even after Guan Suo's death, in her biography she heroically defends Jiameng upon learning of her husband's death. She was also a free-spirited and courageous woman, not liking to live with the conservative norms of the time. Also her portrayal in ROTK is one of the most beautiful for me.

The Qiao sisters need the biggest change in design and in personality. Make them 18 and 17. 12 and 13 is just weird when they are shown with their spouses. To Zhuge Liang I'd add a pokerface personality trait. Historically this guy was soo much more of a menace than his counterpart Sima Yi.

My list would be, not in any particular order: Honorable mention: Cao Ren (They should lean more heavily into the whole humanist and pacifist side of his personality that came out more in earlier games.) 10. Xu Huang/Taishi Ci (They could honestly be the same. Just generic honorable warrior types. For Taishi Ci they should lean a bit more into the family angle highlighting his mom and how Sun Ce not only admires his skills, but his devotion to family. Make him more of a compassionate and softie type warrior, at least to his allies. I have no ideas for Xu Huang, but he needs a better personality) 9. Xu Zhu (The whole fat and hungry thing is a disservice to Cao Cao's bodyguard and one of their strongest warriors. I'm fine with his personality still being childlike and gullible, but making him stupid and fat is a bad move. They could make him childlike without stupid.) 8. Deng Ai (He has the personality of a wet paper bag in the games which is a shame since he was pretty much the main star Wei general after 234 and Jiang Wei's rival. He should have a much more dynamic personality. He needs a total rework) 7. Yuan Shao (His personality until DW5 was perfect, now he's just a meme for an aristocrat. Revert him to his former self.) 6. Han Dang (The whole I'm forgettable thing is lame. Lean much more heavily into how he feels an increasing sense of responsibility for the Sun family after Sun Jian's death, sort of like an adoptive fatherly role, especially as all the old guard dies and it's just still him looking out for Sun Jian's legacy and family) 5. Zhu Ran (Great look, just needs to be less of a meme about fire and burning things. Make him a bit more serious focusing on his childhood friendship with Sun Quan) 4. Xiao Qiao (She's an annoying child in the games which also makes Zhou You look like a pedo. She needs a complete overhaul) 3. Bao Sanniang (She's incredibly annoying and has no role in the story at all. They have never had a clue what to do with her and they need to rework her entire personality and role in the story) 2. Guan Ping (He looks awesome but his entire personality is him talking about his dad. He needs a personality of his own.) 1. Wei Yan (He was cunning and tactically smart, not a dumb barbarian. He needs a much better persona that allows his personality to shine, Also focus on his and Ma Dai's relationship a lot more)

I agree with all but one. Yuan Shoa. I think his pompous, arrogant attitude well represents his characterization in the novels and other three kingdoms media. I would replace his spot with a double, as I have long felt these 2 characters could switch aesthetics. Ma Dai and Xu Shu. The assassins creed vibes do not fit Xu Shu at all, while Ma Dai handled special/secret assignments for Zhuge Liang, including the assassination/execution (depending on its framing) of Wei Yan. The mystical painter/strategist aesthetic would be better suited to Xu Shu than Ma Dai, as I don’t feel Ma Dai is all that much of a strategist, as they tried to paint him (pun intended) in DW7/8.

Thats not a cowboy hat LOL. Its called a "Futou" and its always shown in paintings and art of Zhou Cang (and a couple others like Ma Dai). The only thing "wrong" about Zhou Cang's look is actually his lack of a beard as he is described as "A strong, muscular man who wore his Futou tilted forward. He had piercing eyes, and a scruff of beard making his features look similar to a bears"- Legends of the three Kingdoms". I think he was designed like he was because his descriptions would have him looking very similar to Zhang Fei. He was also gruff, and spoke his mind like Zhang Fei did as well, so they did him this way to make him more unique. I completely agree with two on this list. Guo Huai and Xu Zhu. Both deserve a more respectful presentation. Xu Zhu stood toe to toe with some of the best of that time, like Ma Chao, Yan Liang and Wen Chou, Gan Ning, and many others. He was no slouch, but a monster of a warrior. Guo Huai was a good leader and strategist.

I absolutely adore Guo Huai & Han Dang. They may not have the most development but they both stand out to me, I love their looks, movesets and personalities and they’re both in my top 10 characters. I’d swap Guo Huai on this list with Ma Dai - I honestly cannot stand him and I hate the paintbrush (I’m not counting the axes as his because I like each character having a unique weapon and they’re Zhang Liao’s). Yuan Shao is another one I’m not sure I agree on - I like a lot more DW6 onwards. I agree with the majority of your other picks though!

From these top 10, maybe I have another opinion (or same as yours) - Li Dian: deeper explanation of how he could discover his foresight ability and retain his DW9 DLC weapon and moveset - Bao Sanniang: deeper story before meeting Guan Suo and her life after Guan Suo's death - Yuan Shao: his personality should be reverted back to DW4-DW5 one since Yuan Shu somewhat mimics his recent personality - Hua Xiong: his weapon and deeper personality than just another (one-sided) Lu Bu's rival - Zhou Cang: his weapon and interaction with Zhao Yun to make his personality well-written - Xiahouji: her physical appearance (she's too babyface and childlike for the wild and barbaric Zhang Fei) and weapon that really suits her personality - Guo Huai: I disagree with yours. His loyalty really takes a toll on his physical health and that what makes him a well-written character for me - Zhang Bao: just change his weapon

Good list, I don't care about some charecters (Guan and Zhang kids (except Xing Cai), Xiao sisters, Boa, Zhu Ran) and if they remove them not really miss em. The only character I disagree is Wei Yan, I love his barbarian stick. But if they explore his unjustly treatment I'm totally okay with that. Yuan Shao need better treatment, Han Dang should be more memorable, Guo Huai shouldn't be annying, Xu Shu definetely need better treatment. And Li Dian is an important figure without their support Cao Cao finished by Lu Bu, his rivalry with Zhang Liao would be much better. And nothing could save Xiahou Ji, she must be completely removed. Here is my additions: Meng Huo and Zhurong: They should be more active and capable. Xu Huang: One of the best generals, he need better treatment. They could explore his friendship with Guan Yu. A better explored Yuan campaing fix so many thing. Cai Wenji: More interaction with story could help her,, I really love her moveset. Jiang Wei: I'm not Shu fan but god this character is annoying as hell. They should make him less annoying or less imbecile.

Id want Xu Zhu: Making him the big fat stupid guy is a disservice to one of Cao Cao's finest bodyguards. You can make him a nice and you can make him simple but he shouldnt be an idiot The Guan babies: All of them are there to say how cool Guan Yu is. Then they die off screen. Give them more motivation than just 'my dads so cool'. Sun Shang Xiang: She really should have more to do than being married to Liu Bei. Remember when she could be the commander of Wu stages if you played as her. Now shes a glorified Shu character but you cant play as her in the Shu story Wei Yan: Making him talk like a barbarian doesnt make any sense. Li Dian should just be homo but not flamboyant. He can also share a stronger bromance with Yue Jin but without being shoved in our faces. Its more respectful imo if they just make their relationship subtle but obvious. OR , just make it follow history Zhou Cang’s speed is hilarious. I disagree with a good chunk of your point of Guo Huai. I think toning him down a bit is a good idea but part of his charm is the fact he's ghastly and frail looking and kicks ass with the Arm Cannon (a Glass Cannon type character). Maybe like Guo Jia have him being prone to overexerting himself. Wei Han I agree with

Honestly I think this is what happens when you just have too many characters within roughly the same time line: Yellow turban rebellion- Wu Zhang Plains. From DW3-DW9 there’s almost 100 characters now. It’s almost impossible to flesh out several characters unless they add new made up battles. I dunno. I just don’t know how they’re going to do it. Especially when the next game comes out I’m sure their going to add even more characters. I knew it was heading downhill when in DW8 each battle you play as several characters instead of just one.

Some great points, but I think being "fat and childlike", or "coughing all the time" or "Dumb barbarian" makes some of these characters atleast noticeable unfortunately. You're right, these characters deserve a better personality, but this dumb schtick makes them different, adds more variety and people remember them more compared to some of the "good badass" characters.

I really liked Guo Jia. His illness bothered me, but he kind of reminded me of a Chinese Vampire. Him and his Arm-Cannon, plus the Musou of life leeching… Damn fine! Still… He could use some work. Hua Xiong… I saw him kind of like a strong follower to Lu Bu’s ideals. I could see him being this strong, silent guardian. His weapon would be a tie between a giant javelin, to a Chinese war hammer. Xu Zhu should be this strong, honorable farmer. Took on the role of a soldier because of the war. He fights because he wants things to be back to peace so he can enjoy farming. He’s not stupid, shouldn’t sound stupid, nor be treated like he is.

They did Xiahou Ji and the Xiao Sisters dirty, it made Zhang Fei, Zhou Yu and, Sun Ce look like pedos. If Cai Wenji was still alive during the Jin Dynasty then her story should've continued. Bao Sanniang sounds annoying af but they made her age perfect for Guan Suo to be his wife but still she sounds annoying. What happen to Wang Yi? she went incognito mode after Ma Chao died. Same with Lu Lingqi where she after Lu Bu died? Wei Wan got insulted, they did him more dirty then those girls i mentioned. Zhang Chunhua died off screen and never mentioned her death earlier. Yuan Shao is new Yuan Shao. Diao Chan disappeared. And there is more characters that need to be revamped but yeah.

I think Li Dian's interesting, they just need to go a little more over the top with both of his gimmicks. Doesn't need a massive change imo, just, make him 'more' of what he already is. I think Zhou Cang is... fine. I like the idea of him just being a speedster, that's kinda fun. Could use a little bit more to him, but I don't think he needs massive changes. Yuan Shao in DW9 'is' back to how he used to be. I really think people just, hear the higher pitch voice, and assume he's still goofy. Dw9 Yuan Shao has more depth than DW5 and prior ever did. Especially since they acknowledged he's adopted. He's not a real Yuan, so it frames all of his "NO, THIS IS MY PRIDE AND HONOUR" behaviour, as trying to prove himself constantly, and makes his interactions with Cao Cao way better. I think you're completely wrong on Hua Xiong. He's not just a big dumb oaf. The game makes it very clear, he's a capable, competent commander. He's just 'simple'. He trusts everyone easily, he doesn't understand social situations well, he's easily manipulated, he's all in all a good person, but he works for the villain. There is depth, and lots of potential there. Especially around the end of his campaign in DW9 where the peons are all talking about how much they love him. I do agree on a different weapon, though of the club users, I did find his moveset the most fun. That is a bit of a low bar though. I really think they should give him something similar to Masanori Fukushima's weapon, which, they did do in Wo Long. They released a design document talking about his visual design, and, that exact weapon, perfectly matches everything they were aiming for with Hua Xiong. That's what I'd like to see in the future. Pretty much agree on the rest, maybe not on 'how' I'd like to see them changed, but, definitely changed in some ways. Personally, I'd add on : - Zhu Ran. Just... The worst written character in the game. Genuinely, every singular aspect of his personality, revolves around, "I like fire and don't like Lu Xun." He's such a dissappointment. - Ma Chao. Ma Chao is interesting, but, he feels like he's constantly being pulled in different directions. Especially with Wang Yi around. Small changes needed I think. - Wang Yuanji. She was so good in DW7. What the hell happened. - Zhuge Dan. Also amazing in DW7. Dear god they butchered him. - Xun Yu. He's boring. Xun You, at least is used comedically, he's bland, but that's kinda the joke. Jia Xu messes with him, everyone's partying around him, and Xun You is just sitting there looking like he hasn't slept in weeks. Xun Yu... Just, doesn't have anything. Like, there's no gimmick, there's no real personality. He's just kinda there. - Cai Wenji. She's actually perfect. But, she's never used in game. She literally just needs to be put in some stages. Make no changes, never give her the whip again. - Taishi Ci. Character who's been around since DW1. Has never seen any significant changes, doesn't look or act anything like the man he's based on, and there's not much to him. I don't dislike Taishi Ci, I just think he could be better. - Xu Huang. Similar to Taishi Ci. He was interesting, there's a lot you could do to add to him. Both Xu Huang and Taishi Ci suffer from, "Being like Zhang Liao, but Zhang Liao is better in every way." - Zuo Ci. Delete him. Or, turn him into a hidden op bossfight. There's no reason he should be in the story mode.

I would love Xin Xianying to got through a complete revamp as well, listening to her go on makes my ears bleed. I cannot play as her because of it. I would also love to see Zhou Tai get some more development too, as he was a pirate first and ended up as a high ranking general who was given authority over Gan Ning and Xu Sheng and was never just Sun Quan's bodyguard.

The biggest problem is the rooster is way too large for KOEI to really build and develop every character equally 👍 They have to cut unnecessary warriors with no significance and boring personalities (Bao Sanniang, Guan Suo, Zhou Cang, Cai Wenji, Man Chong, Xun You, Xiahou Ji,...) and put in some real interesting ones like Liao Hua, Li Yan [Shu], Niu Jin, Wen Pin [Wei], Jiang Qin, Pan Zhang [Wu], Li Jue, Gou Si, Gongsun Zan, Gao Shun [Others] ✅️

As far as revamps go, I'll go with Lingqi, now here me out. I think she should join Shu. Why? Well, out of the two playable survivors, Zhang Liao joins Wei. I feel she would secretly resent that, and would only join Liu Bei to get revenge on Cao Cao. I know it's not historically accurate, but virtually nothing is none of her historical self anyway. I just feel like something more can be done with her, and I feel like she would have contributed well during the escape of Chang Ban, and most likely the Battle of Chi Bi. I feel she would do so well there and show off her father's legacy well. If you want the "daughter of the demon" to survive the war, why not show her still fighting when she said she would? Regarding that, with the whole father complex, she'd get along with or have a friendly rivalry with Guan Ping. Maybe they'd catch feelings? Who knows, but it would be because of this bond that she would stand with him and heroically die during the battle of fan castle.

I did a Zhang Bao playthrough in DW8 EMPIRES and I must say.. It was the worst playthrough I did in that game.. His personality and his weapon leave a lot to be desired

I pretty much agree with all of this The Qiao Sisters need to be aged up a little more mature they can still be naive and innocent (see Xiao Qiao in the red cliff movie) but not childish Li Dian really needs a lot of work build up the romance with Yue Jin and his rivalry with Zhang Liao (I am a fan of making this due to Zhang Liao killing his uncle) and definitely make him pick a personality I would recommend cutting Bao Sanniag and merging Guan suo and Guan Xing but she definitely needs to have a story of herself independent of her husband and then build her relationships with her husband new comrades You could replace Zhou Cang with Liao Hua they basically fulfill the same role except that Liao can get a new role post Fancheng. Old Yuan Shao was best! Give him Back koei!!! 9 was a bit better i agree especially the armor. The problem with making Yuan shao, Dong Zhuo and others joke characters is it detracts from the story. Why is Dong Zhuo a threat if he’s such a cartoony villain. Why would people follow yuan shao in the coalition if hes so… like that. He doesn’t seem like someone cao Cao would consider a threat or even an obstacle when in the games and the lore he was! Zhang Bao should really get the 2010 treatment. Trained under his father acquired considerable skills but without the vices of his fathet however he doesn’t quite measure up to his father nevertheless he is the vanguard of the Shu army post Fancheng leading from the front trying to push his way forward. This would make his eventual death in the northern expedition all the more tragic a man who tried his hardest to be the new battlefield leader but just couldn’t quite get there. I actually like the double flail i was surprised although I think him and guan xing should have a variant of their fathers weapons like in the novel Yeah Hua Xiong needs to be more of serious threat like i said with dong and yuan. They should give him the mace so pang de gets the halberds and Zhang liao gets the guandao Yes justice for Guo huai!!! I rather have wei yan be like ferb from phineas and ferb was he doesn’t talk a lot but when he does he says something really insightful. But if not dw4 is ok. Delete Xiahou Ji!!! I think when it comes to characters like Bao Sanniang and Zhou Cang, I feel like they didnt really try because, ultimately, they weren't real. They were created OC characters. So Toei just went whatever. There is definitely something they could do, but truthfully id like them to focus on other characters. Edit: Also, as i am currently going through Dynasty Warriors 9, i feel like Xiahouji should not have been created. I appreciate how they changed how Zhang Fei and her got together. If you know the history though... Idk, if they werent trying to make Zhang Fei seem more barbaric than he already is, including her probably wasnt in best hindsight.

I think Zhou Cang being a pretty boy was a mistake - back in the day when he was only a ROTK sprite he’s a scruffy bear type with a Nice Hat (that’s why the cowboy hat isn’t going anytime soon). I haven’t played his story, and I’m not sure I got what he fights for from the cutscenes I’ve seen would be nice to be something like he runs away from trouble and responsibilities until fan castle. But I don’t feel his relationships are fleshed out cause Guan Yu will always feel like his boss so they just need someone else that he can play off of (Liao Hua probably would be a good call). Seeing #9... what Yuan Shao had to do with Bao Sanniang??? Also, i wholeheartedly agree with Hua Xiong needing a revamp. I just upset that they made him a dumb character in DW9 and i prefer how he is in DW8 XL more. A probable equal to Lu Bu and someone who might be close to match him.

The only one I agree on even slightly more than disagree is XiahouJi. Wei Yan and Bao I'm 50/50 on and disagree with the rest.

Yea man Xu Chu....He can still be big- fat and just make him meaner and aggressive instead of a giant chubby panda! Also change his weapon from the goofy club to something like the dual halberds or the giant axe! Just imagine how much cooler his interactions with Dian Wei will be or his dual with Ma Chao will be with a look/personality and weapon change! Xun You...why did they make him look so bad? I always liked Guo Huai as a joke character that you also had to take seriously. He was no more a caricature than Zhang He imo. Also, attention to detail. A few weapon abilities in 8 boosted stats if you were in critical health or knocked to the ground. Guo Huai knocking himself over with his Musou 3 or his Musou Rage counted.

10, 9: I'm pretty sure there's plenty they can do for Li Dian. Not sure about Bao Sanniang. Don't like her. Don't think she's necessary nor interesting. 8: Hero worship ain't cool. Sure, Guan Yu is extremely loyal to Liu Bei but not the way Zhou Cang is to Guan Yu. I doubt it's that hard to fix if they're willing to retcon. 7: To be honest I think he's ok. I only don't like him in 5 and earlier. 6: My impression is that they created a bunch of next generation children and they went for the chill friendship thing instead of serious adult thing. Don't like it, but at least I think it's unique to Shu. Maybe Shu fans can appreciate it. For me though Guan Suo Guan Xing Zhang Bao I treat them all as 1 character. 5: He's too ugly. 4: I also was not fine with Guo Huai being the way he is. He grew on me though. Still, he'd be better if they at least hide his sickness a little instead of emphasising it every time. 3: I can't say much. I'm just not sure where they drew the inspiration to make him the way he is. 2: This character is a mistake. Don't revamp her. Delete her. 1: My impression is that when they created Dian Wei, they kinda combined Xu Chu and Dian Wei into one. So when they created Xu Chu they can't just make another Dian Wei. The way they treat him. All about eating and food. No other personality. Doubt they even care about him. At least his line when he came to save Cao Cao after Chi Bi in 5 is forever in my memory.

Why are you trying to get rid of their schtick? For some like Xiahou Ji, yeah her story is already problematic enough. But for Yuan Shao and Xu Chu? Not every character needs to be Cao Cao 2.0 or Guan Yu 2.0. In fact I think some of the newer characters need a schtick to avoid being a bland copycat of the previous character. Before DW7 they add characters with differing personalities that you can either really hate or love. Now it seems like they want every characters to be likable. NOOO Not every character need to be the poster guy. Why can't a character exist to be laughed or jeered at? They have dozens of characters by now surely they already have their poster guys and girls already among them.
