I freshen up the stable in 87, 90 & in 92 bought a CR 250& 500 what a year that was, after that my son received the new bikes as he began racing. We’ve had many modern 4 strokes and being a performance engine builder coaxing rideable power improvements was the goal but the expense of doing it is not practical for anyone but the top pro’s. But the linear power of the 4 strokes is the ONLY reason to consider one but you better have a deep pocket and an understanding wife that’s for sure! GOD BLESS AMERICA AND YOU!!!

Yeah I find it funny how people still think the 500 2 stroke is so godly. Modern 4 strokes have surpassed 2 strokes nowadays but they deny it. Tune a 21 yz 450 with simple bolt on mods and itll pull away from their modded 500s aswell as turn a faster lap time being more manageable with the power.

Surprise surprise, a fully built race engine is more powerful than a showroom stock one. Yes there's many years between them, except that the race builds are top-shelf, recent technology too. And midrange torque is something to consider, but you can drop several teeth on a 4T and make up the difference because of how much higher it revs (torque can be directly multiplied by gearing). I ride desert and mountains with my modified, 52whp '18 Husqy FX350. It's magic-carpet smooth and always predictable, the perfect adventure companion. It's plenty fast, especially because I can stay a gear lower and really cash in on the topend versus a 2T. If I want thrills and big power hits, I get them on the street with big turbo cars. To each their own.

Ultimately your still putting 20yr old tech vs modern tech. I'd love to see a 500cc 2T developed similar to the modern 300's 2 strokes. I think the amount of usable power would the biggest gain. Imagine a 500 that didn't vibrate your teeth outta your head with minimal engine braking.
@michaelmeykens34373 жыл бұрын
That is actually 35yr old technology vs modern technology. Honda detuned the CR500R engine from 1985 on. No matter how you look at it, you have got to give it to the two stroke engine design. Let’s be honest (yes, you spent 10K on a new 450, it’s all good), taking everything into account, the two stroke engine is the best design for motocross racing.
@dormantmenace3 жыл бұрын
@@michaelmeykens3437 no.. the 2 stroke engine is clearly NOT the best design for motor cross racing. The modern 4t 450 only makes marginally better hp than a yz 250 2t. And within a couple pndft of torque. Yet destroys it in anything other than a drag race to the next corner.. Simply do to usable power over a much broader power curve Power that always thier Resulting in what really wins races.. TRACTION. The 2t unloads everything it has all at once. Wich might make great peak hp and torque numbers and be a blast to ride. But it's shit in comparison to usuable power. It's like high hp drag racers. You can only use what you can put down. I've owned some nasty cr 500. I've rode nastier kx 500. I've blown up my share of 450's and I currently ride a yz 250 2t. Cause I love it and will take it over a 4t every day. But plain and simple modern 4t didn't replace 2t because of peak power numbers. They replaced them because of how easy to use and broad thier power is. Wich 100% makes them the better racer. Oh and the 4t bangs out much higher rpm. Wich allows the 450 to literally walk away from the big 500 2t on the big end. Given traction 500 all day till 5th gear redline then 450 just walks on buy

I have a fully built kx500 snowbike it's not the peak horsepower that is impressive about these bikes, it's the huge torque numbers from extremely low rpms that a 450 four stroke has no chance in hell to match. That's what you feel when you ride them. You need to over lay the dyno pulls and look at the torque. 2 stroke makes power every rotation of the crank four stroke makes every second add load like snow and it separates the men from the boys! If someone made a 500cc twin thats max 5kg more than a single cyl and has two cr250 jugs it would rip HARD

Yup just look at the moto gp older 250 2 strokes. Those things ripped and the 500 gp bikes probably put out 200hp.

One think to keep in mind , if you scatter a 450 , its gonna cost you big $$$ !!! Rebuilding a 2 stroke has always been far less . Plus 2 strokes flat out rule !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BRAAAAAAAP !!!! just sounds better too ... lol

Hate to sound like a nerd but a 2 stroke engine in theory should make double the hp of a 4 stroke of the same displacement. It's really impressive how the new 450 4 strokes make 2 stroke 500 power with 2 extra strokes for 1 power cycle.
@franksmith66832 жыл бұрын
There's a couple of reasons the 2 stroke don't manage that; The technology is decades older for a start, and they can't run a very high compression because the fuel is effectivly contaminated with oil, thus reducing effective octane and knock resistance. The 4 strokes are pretty cutting edge high compression racing motors and a lot has been learned since 2 stokes were left behind.

With the new four stroke You lose out having a motor that when it blows up and if you ride it, it will blow up - it ain’t no old school Xr or xl that can have years and years of trouble free riding. The new four stroke blow up almost in two stroke lifespans and cost insane money to rebuild. That’s why they make the power they do, while it’s amazing for a regular bike owner it really not a smart investment you’re better off with a cr125 or 250 then the four stroke equivalent unless you have more money then me. Or just buy a low hp non race based motor.

56.14 is a record for 500s? That sucks, the new 21 crf450rwe makes 56.7 :(

Yamaha and Suzuki are underpowered compared to the 450 competition (Honda, ktm, husky, gasgas) they all make around 63 at the crank

@@RT22-pb2pp yup, sold my 85 (for a fortune) because like you, he thought it was the most powerful and fastest dirtbike there was. I wasn't about to tell him my new 2020 was not only faster, but more powerful as well. Here's a nice comparison between a cr500 and the underpowered 08 crf450. Even that slow CRF turned 6 second faster laptimes. The 19+ CRFs make about 8 more hp than the 08s (and a couple more than cr500s) www.vitalmx.com/forums/MotoRelated,20/Shootout-CRF450-VS-CR500,60661

I love the 2 strokes but love the 450s. My 17 450 seems to have more usable power, especially with 3 maps on the fly. But I’ll always keep both cause I still love the hard hitting 2 strokes. Just according on the mood and where and who I’m riding with. That KX is badass, but It’s Honda’s for me.
