I am not sure if i can help your child but you try to let her have lessons with me . I can tell you what is going on with math , but i cannot tell you about others . i teach math differently and my students at their young age usually are far better than the others and i am talking about in Hong Kong So in other places i am sure they are 1 to 2 years ahead of others . let me know .

I still to this day struggle with math. I still use my fingers to count and back in grade 4, I had a teacher who would get upset with me and told me I was not smart for not being able to grasp my multiplication tables and other math-related things and she would tell my parents that there was something wrong with me. I exclusively used to get more homework than everyone else, and at home, I didn't feel any better. My parents then later signed me up for Math and English tutoring classes. In the tutor classes, there were a few kids with me there at a table. On the math tutor days, she used to get frustrated with me for not understanding. I would always feel very nervous because I don't want to get people mad at me, so I try my best and tell her what I thought the answer was and every time I got the answer wrong, she would always slam the table REALLY hard and yell at me about why I can't understand these things in front of the other kids and it would startle me. I remember I ended up lying to my mom that the math tutoring was over at some point because it would constantly give me anxiety and constantly nervous. I would still go to the English tutor class because I felt smarter and more included in the calm environment. Basically, math in general is a very traumatic concept for me. Since finding out I might have dyscalculia, I told my parents about this and all they are responding to me with is, "Ohh you're fine! That's all fake don't let the media trick you!" I wasn't ever diagnosed or anything, but your childhood, (woman in the video) it resonates with me and every time you explain how you felt, it kind of felt like a bullet to the chest. As if I felt that too. I don't know, I'm rambling. 🤷‍♀

Thank you for this. I have a teen with dyscalculia who was diagnosed 4 years ago. I see many parallels and this gives me encouragement to not give up.

Thank you for posting this. It must have taken a lot of courage to speak so honestly about your struggles. My son is twelve and has dyspraxia and dyslexia with high levels of anxiety. Knowing that he can do the Functional Maths and English exams and go on to university and have a career will really help him over the next few years.

Hi Lauren. This is so helpful. It’s funny I do the 5 times table thingy with the clock. My bf thinks its crazy but i explain thats how I do it. Its easy for me that way. I had an awful experience with the doctor trying to get diagnosed at age 24. Basically saying you’re a full time carer for your mum why do you need to learn? I couldn’t believe the response I want to do something with my life. Any advice would be amazing!!

Hi Lauren, thank you for this! I've just watched it with my daughter who is 15 and is diagnosed with Dyspraxia, Dyslexia and I'm quite sure she has Discalculia but thisb hasnt been tested yet. She gets so frustrated with herself when she cant find her words or she gets 'in a muddle' - it's hard to see and she does struggle with it, but like you she has such fantastic people skills and never sees disability in people. I'm just trying to work on her self esteem now. Can I ask what you did at Uni? Many thanks, Maria

Hi Maria thank you so much for your kind message! Unfortunately Dyscalculia is difficult to get diagnosed you’ve really got to fight for it. I can imagine how tough it can be for your daughter at times, but as she gets older her confidence will grow and she’ll embrace who she is! My degrees in broadcasting that’s where I found my passion I absolutely loved it. I’m now building my career in presenting ☺️

@@laurenduffy3809 thank you for your reply! I wish you all the very best in your career - and thank you again for what you are doing for others, it's very empowering for the young people especially, to hear from someone who's been there themselves and is now doing well. We'll keep an eye out for you! X
