Love the way the tutor is saying they 'should' be able to do this, asking 'why not' and putting the pressure on. This is my life daily.

Every person that does anything in education should be required to undergo one of these sessions. Now all we need to do is configure one of these simulations for dyscalculic students.

same. I'm also deslexic and it's hard no being able to read and write like your friends and family and going slower than everyone else and when teachers think they know everything about it but they don't and they don't know how to help either. do you know how many days I've spent trying to fake being sick so that I didn't have to go to school because I was afraid I wouldn't understand it.

I too have dyslexia and this looks like a good simulation for teachers and parents. One thing I see in this classroom setting is that everyone was experiencing the same feelings of being inadequate. When you are a child with dyslexia you are the only one in the room that feels this way and everyone else in the room knows all the answers. So you feel like you are not intelligent, you feel fear of ridicule and rejection from your piers and the teachers. A student with dyslexia feels alone in the classroom and in this simulation the students were looking at each other for conformation. They were able to see that they weren't the only one not finish the task. In this case everyone felt like it was hard. But what if you put only one person in that same simulation and everyone else in the room was able to read and answer all the questions. Now that one person would feel the intensity of how a true dyslexic feels like.

There are diffrent aspect of dyslexia. Not all dyslexic people have trouble reading. Some only have problems with numbers. Or maybe just writing. There are different forms that affect diffrent things. Even multiple. It effects, how you remember like list or procedures. Memory , speech, reading both numbers and letters, writing. Those are other aspects people can face with dyslexia.
@mrfant338
@mrfant338 8 жыл бұрын
+KZfaq Trash Technically if it is likely to be numbers only it is probably dyscalculia opposed to dyslexia. Yes I agree there are lots of different aspects but this simulation has affected the recall of information due to the processing involved to decode. I think this is helpful providing the awareness is that it is not only these aspects. It may also be co-morbied with a processing disorder.

This simulation make me cry, I discovered myself as a Dislexy after notice that my son could have a learning disability no one was believing on me. It's was and had been a really hard time for me. English is my second language and I am learning yet. So to take my son through all process to be diagnostic it was a challenge, trying to read all this complex vocabulary and talk to the neuro psicologist doctors , teachers social therapist. Now that we know what he has I am researching for improve my rotines to help him keeping in trail and be success adult. And not be fustrad.

This is the closest I've heard of nondyslexic people experiencing a childs dyslexia - mine was worst in 3rd & 4th grades - I hated school with a passion, played sick a lot because couldn't read. I spent all my time trying to figure out what each individual word was, let alone string them together as a sentence. My 5th grade teacher actually really and successfully tried to help and encourage me (a first). I was able to read my first book that summer (all on my own & it was great!!! a milestone, I was slow and still am but I could read a book and enjoy it). College was hard but I got my Ba and then Grad school. Keep up youre really great work.

This is a pretty good test. I often feel like i'm guessing words when rading a text. Over time i learn the shape of certain words, and so i kind of see a picture of a word which i remember reading before. And so i can remember the sound of the word. But every tim i read a new word i stuggel.

Gizly McFluffy same, and when I’m writing I often leave out words and letters. Sometimes even sentences. I have to read everything over in my head, and it’s so frustrating. I thought it was normal, but then I got tested in high school and I realized it wasn’t.

I’m exactly the same. I use higher functions to read. I do the same as you, know the shape of a word, then guess context and have a mostly accurate system but means I can miss some details. Like I know someone called June and I kee thinking her name means the month not her lol. I saw this simulation of dyslexia where the words constantly jumbled within themselves and I realised just how incredibly adapted I am to my dyslexia because I could read it fine while non dyslexics couldn’t do it at all 😆

To make simulations like this even more life like, there should be one or two people in the “class” that are given normal texts or texts that are only slightly more difficult than usual and the “teacher” should praise them and use them as examples of what the others “should” be able to do. I greatly appreciate work like this being done and hope that one day many more people will understand the challenges of being dyslexic.

People think that it's all reading words and while that is a problem it's not the only one. In my opinion math is even harder, because words have a pattern that can be learned. Math on the other hand is a whole new level of terror, because if you misplace a symbol, flip a number, or forget a letter you fail. Don't even get me started on word problems: I have to decipher the words, figure out what it's asking for, write the equation, and solve without messing up. I have spent up to six hours on one high school level word problem and still gotten it wrong.

i hate math...to an astronomical degree. it sucks when no one believes i have this just because i like reading. do they know how many times i have to read something in my head in order to be able to remotely say it out loud. or why i keep mixing up equation time and time again because that is simply what i see.

This is "Dyslexia for a Day" What would it be like if you had it every day? Would you think it was fair? Would you think people see you as dumb? Would you worry about getting through school? Would you worry about your future? It is not about just reading and writing. It is about the world around you. That is why we need informed and caring educators for students with dyslexia.

I hated it so much I remember back in third grade I tried to fit in by reading huge books like everyone else but I couldn’t read it and I also used to have adhd I also still have it but not as much so when I tried to do things I just wouldn’t understand anything. I wish the teachers understood. my d’s where b’s and my 1’s where 7’s everything was backwards so whenever I wrote or read anything it would be wrong and my mom was also very strict so it was so hard for me to learn if you are dixlexic always keep an alphabet next to you that’s what I did and still do today.

All the way though school I was told to "try harder" "answer the question then" "what is it you don't understand then" All of them being horrible and causing the other children to laugh at me, only a year ago was I told I had dyslexia. Teachers told me I had to do it or else I wouldn't be going home. Long nights I spent in school to try and complete a book or work I "had" to do. Teachers need to be on the look out instead of making children think they are "stupid" "thick" "an idiot"

+giancarlo vassal You can do it, I have dyslexia I have now got through two degrees and teach mathematics at secondary school. I have found that because academic studies use very formal language I have learnt to write in a very academic manner because it obeys the strict rules. Because research involves thinking and struggling over material anyway the additional time that it takes me enables me to ponder ideas and to apply these academically. While I am not presuming it will be the same for you it is definitely possible to study with Dyslexia,

I'm 24 years old I love being dyslexic now, I'm in the middle of owning and my own real estate company, and I'm going to be the best at it. but I didn't love it during my school years. when you come up in age you are going to embrace dyslexia. Snow 123. That's not good for your kids though. School is the hardest part, but school is also where they're going to learn how to deal with people making fun of them. It harts but that's some I feel like all dyslexia people must go through. Your going to keep them in homeschool till they finish school, In they going to get out in this real world not knowing truly how to accept their disability, and deal with other people. that's important for the function of the brain. Let them go to school.

Mia Enten First off Congratulations! Second... You are not stupid. I have dyslexia as well, I'm 22. It's a challenge everyday don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I'm not going to say it gets easier, because it doesn't. You just get better at figuring out what works and doesn't work for you. My dyslexia helped me speak through poetry. Dyslexic people are the most creative people around. We shine at different stuff that people without dyslexia aren't as good in. All I can say is, find your niche and run with it. Mine just so happens to be poetry... You will eventually find yours as well... Just give it time. Don't worry... You'll be fine. I have complete faith in you. Good luck and have fun along the way. Bye! 😊

Still relevant as a way to teach teachers and others about the challenges of dyslexia. In third grade I was sent to a tutor for a bogus reason but she picked up on my "reading" the first syllable of a word and guessing the remainder of the multi syllable word. Her biggest advice to me was two part - read, read, read all kinds of different subject material to increase my vocabulary - next was after each sentence or paragraph to think "did that make sense". Even if b, d, p, q, m, n, u, v, w played their games I could generally figure out the first syllable as many just didn't make sense so words such as baseball, basement, baseless could be guessed in the context of the subject matter even if I skipped over the second syllable. At age 69 now I still laugh at my misreading KZfaq titles and other things but things like dyslexic font and "dark mode" do make things somewhat easier to manage. ASD, ADHD and dyslexia don't disappear with age, many of us manage with various work arounds to cope and manage. Then spell check is nice if it is working correctly but sometimes I just can't figure out even the close to correct spelling for spell check to make appropriate corrections. The "test page" I could likely read the full thing within the time limit now without referring to the "changed letters" but may need to reread some sentences due to misinterpretation of some words.

As a child in the early 70s, i can see my self as artistic, i am a good illustrator than anyone at my age that time, A good singer, a good dancer, But one terrifying task that i face each day, was school, I had a severe learning problem, a read slow and learned slow, and iam weak in mind and my physical motor, often bullied at school, and the worse is that i couldnt memorize all the multiplication tables, even if i tried, those days they dont know anything about this in the philippines, all they know, if a child learn things so difficult... is you are just another stupid dumb kid in school, or they can say abnormal or idiot, My journey thru life is like hell for me, because of my severe math problems, i had lost so many chances, like joining the US NAVY, since i coulndt pass thier math exams when i was a teen, Just because this dyslexic demon had kept me out of the normal world, I had graduated from a design school in 1988, and i had been able to get a job and got married and had two kids, whom very fortunate who are very smart and does not to have dyslexia, A kind of curse that tormented me all my life until this moment., If only i can ask GOD, if i will get a chance to live again in this cruel world.... is to be born as normal like everyone else who can learn math and be so good at it, and so as to exceed in my school and be a productive & very intelligent person to serve and perform in any complicated job that i can achieve.

There's another aspect to dyslexia that I don't think I've ever heard talked about. Even if you can figure out how to read there's this thing you have to deal with where what you just read doesn't...stick is the only way I can describe it. As an example, the last time I was tested it was done unusually. Normally it's one on one over 2 days. This last time though there was about 15 of us in the same room. We were given this 2 page story if I remember correctly. We had to read it and answer some questions. There was this kid in the back of the room reading in a loud whisper kinda under his breath but everyone could hear it. He was hunched over his desk had both elbows on the desk and his hands on either side of his head. He was focused like a laser on what he was reading. Instantly I knew EXACTLY what he was doing because I've done the exact same thing at least a thousand times. What that kid was doing was every word he was reading he was literally SCREAMING in his mind. He was trying to SLAM that information into his brain so he could retain it! There's times when I can read a page 10 times and I have no clue as to what I just read. When you hear us dyslexic say that reading takes allot out of us that's what we're referring to. That's also why so many of us get pissed when we're called lazy!

It would be nice if ppl could understand better why I didn't learn how to use adobe or how to make a game or just understand why I don't read a lot of books and know why it takes me so long to read one or read summaries or just like all numbers related things, numbers are impossible, I know the process for basic maths but I can't read the numbers and I want ppl to get how frustrating that is.
