The old Dyson suffered a terminal failure involving smoke. Time to see what's inside and what went wrong

Excellent tear down. There is a Hall effect magnetic sensor on the unit which is activated by a permanent magnet in the front filter. Filter needs to be installed to allow the motor to work. Your video showed me how the black fan cover comes off! Thank you for that!

Thanks for you teardown of the dyson dc16. I bought a faulty one that cuts out after 3 seconds, I'm planning of running it from a drill battery that has double the current as the orgional dyson battery on a short lead that I can attach to my belt that easy the cleaner will be lighter. I paid £20 for it boxed and in really good condition obviously hadn't done much but still failed. I think Paul Dyson should be derailed from his throne as a great inventor on all the hype fake marketing that has made him unworthy successful. I enjoy taking things apart and this has been an eye-opener as to the junk Dyson is. This unit hasn't even got a brushless motor, shame shame on dyson, but I suppose at least he rips off the rich like Robin Hood did, I pity anyone who was scammed by dyson with empty promises of this cheap junk, lidl would do a better cleaner. I paid £20 Ann in totally disappointed by the quality of the over priced hyped up junk. I want to point out some of my findings to back up what I'm claiming. 1:Too small of a battery pack that is running overloaded which will cause it to overheat, soluction: could have had double row battery pack with twice the current. 2: battery should be able to charge separately from the cleaner and faster like a shark has that option. 3: should have a soft start brushless motor to ease the startup current as motor gets up to speed. I could go on but it's a waste of time, I'm glad I didn't buy a new one. I've seen this model in Sainsburys supermarket at £160 back I think 2016.

Thanks for the comment & glad if the video’s of some help. I like the sound of your hack. I could do with a hand held to use in the garage; I may well look for a failed Dyson (or similar) on eBay & try a similar thing 👍

What's your experience of the volume of this dyson? I have the same model and it's slightly uncomfortably loud. I'm wondering if it's undergoing a similar self-destruction as yours.

Hi. Ours didn't seem to get louder in the run up to failing completely. I wasn't the one using the machine when it failed but maybe it was bumped against something, causing the impeller to touch the static vanes, leading to a cascade of destruction until the motor stalled and burnt out. Maybe it was the 'last straw' for a long term fault developing in the spinning parts. Either way, there was no noticeable change in volume ahead of time.

I paid good money for that quite a few years ago i still have it. It broke maybe 2 years after I purchased it and I could never get it to work again it runs for 15 seconds and then shuts off. I try to repair it now and again but no luck about 5 years ago I bought a cordless Shark and I couldn't be happier it picks up everything I don't need all them fancy contraptions to put on the end the shark spins and picks it all up it never stops never sputters it's just picks up all the dirt I empty it it's ready to go again I love it I used to love my Dyson but it just decided to stop working if I didn't have vacuum today and I was going to buy one a handheld and I had a choice between a Dyson and a shark I will buy a shark every time and I don't even care about the price it has nothing to do with it I can afford any vacuum I want easily. The shark is just better for me

Thanks for your comment. From my Dyson experience I have to agree with you. I've had several versions now and each generation gets more complex. I've just spent virtually a whole day fixing our V7 Dyson, which had the usual stop-start issue. This seems to always be down to either the battery, or the internal passageways clogging up - it was the latter in my case. I took the V7 completely apart, which is far from straight forward and involves c.14 T8 torx screws, some virtually invisible down deep recesses. Not a job for a casual end user. It was filthy inside the tiny cyclone cones & other complex passageways. FInally got it cleaned up and reassembled (with only one screw left over!😆) and it works like new again. Dysons are great when new but they shouldn't fail after a few years just because their inaccesible internals get dirty. They do seem to have lost a sensible balance between performance, high-tech marketing appeal & practicality. It's also not very 'green' if people end up throwing them away after a couple of years. I don't expect to buy another Dyson and will likely go for a simpler, more serviceable type. I'll definitely have a look at Shark; thanks for sharing your experience with it
