Great job - best vid I've seen showing an E-2 landing with comms. Former E-2 pilot here. IRL you can see a little more but it's still really dark. This video doesn't even show haw hard the pilots have to work in the "stack" before they "push".

As a "Fat Kid" myself, I always respected the E-2 dudes for flying real "working" yoke-and-rudder passes with a big gust-sensitive aircraft. No mode-1 and few gizmos to help ease the workload. It always looked like a handful - much respect! My only critique is that personally, I don't like LSO phrases like "right for lineup" coming from anyone except the LSO while on the ball. Minor quibble and perhaps it was a culture thing for the S-3's I flew. But I could be mistaken - perhaps the pilot at the controls verbalized it (no problem in that case) while I assumed the co-pilot said it.
@edwardlittle5686
@edwardlittle5686 3 ай бұрын
@@WarHoover Yes that was the right seat guy. The difference is in the E-2 he is also a pilot, and often times a senior one. I never minded the help. I wouldn't like it coming from an NFO. I even had senior right seat guys ride the throttles with their left hand and make small adjustments. That was only when I was very junior, of course.

I literally watched both of your videos multiple times over and over lol. I know to you guys it's just another day doing flight ops (day or night) but to anyone who's never been on the deck of a aircraft carrier (especially as a pilot) it's absolutely sick how coordinated the operation is.

From the intercom conversation I would guess this is a non CAPC (Carrier Aircraft Plane Commander) making their first or among their night traps. There is an interesting comment many will have missed. At 4:05 the CAPC advises "a little right for line-up" at 4:09 he advises "Don't let the burble get you." If you freeze the video at 4:09 you will see that the aircraft is passing through line-up left to right and and is about 1/2 to 3/4 of a ball high. Since we can't see the Angle of Attack repeater we don't know about the approach speed. The pilot is 4 seconds away from touch down and has at least 2 of 3 factors that need attention at a very critical part of the approach. For the E-2 this is the most demanding (and potentially dangerous) parts of the approach. As an E-2 CAPC my brain is telling me - if I try to correct for the high ball with a power reduction there is a distinct chance the burble will cause a rapid sink rate and come down at the ramp. With an axial wind this line-up will work okay. I will maintain power settings and tweak the nose down ever so slightly. (Again, this is without knowing the angle of attack.) This is a perfect illustration of what makes the E-2 difficult to land well. Little deviations from ideal can gang up on you and turn an otherwise great approach into a can of worms. GJD - thanks for posting and causing my blood pressure to spike. 😰

@gjd8047
@gjd8047 2 жыл бұрын
RADALT is a RADAR Altimeter. Naval aircraft have a traditional altimeter as well as a RADAR altimeter (determines altitude by bouncing radio waves from the aircraft to the surface and measuring the return time) that works below 5000 ft. The whooping sound you hear at 4:02 is the RADALT going off to let us know we're passing 200 ft.

You need at least 3/4 of a mile visibility to be able to pick up the meatball at CATCC (Carrier Air Traffic Control Center) drop off. Rain is the biggest enemy as you are fighting the low visibility but also the rain off the windscreen. I can't watch one of these videos without a heart rate increase. I am proud to have flown the E-2 but am very glad I will never have to make another low visibility night trap.
