We drove through Mandurah in January en route for Denmark. The freeway through Mandurah was chockablock. Yet there are beautiful, empty trains servicing the same route. Well done on your journey. I have a spare battery for my E bike so, inspired by you l should just get on with it.

Keep 'em coming Steve, they are always informative, I learn something new every time, and the scenery/places you visit (ebike/motorcycle) are great on the eyes. I got myself an eMTB. In hilly Brisbane it really is the difference between not riding at all and having a 100km day out when you’re older and have bad knees. I’d argue that when you have ailments you get way fitter riding an eBike than thinking about riding a normal bike.

Tried following the Wadandi to Augusta but it peters out, had to bush bash, finished up over near Boranup and then had to make my way east to Augusta where I was due to be picked up (literally !). brilliant country to ride thru though, even on the Cape to Cape ride (Twice, never again !) I have visited her and her wee family four or five times and have fallen for the South West. It was a bit emotional watching your vids today that are set in that region, because I will probably not be coming back again - my son in law has been transferred to Qland and they just moved out of their Busso home this weekend en route to their new home near Bundaberg. Bugger. Dust in the eyes. Good thing is that it is only a 3 hour flight from here to Brisbane, shaving 5 hours and many dollars off the cost of getting to Perth... Thanks again.

@mongreldogproductions
@mongreldogproductions 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mr J, cycling the GCR has no appeal to me personally but i have bumped into cyclists on that road during my travels. One rider, Bryan from NZ was averaging 12 kph. When i asked him about water supply he said he relied on the goodwill of tourists which i thought was a bit careless, reckless and irresponsible. A lot could go wrong out there. It would be a three day ride between some resupply points (Docker River, Warakurna, Warburton, Tjukarilya, Wiluna) so you would have to do some serious planning. Glad you liked the vid.

Lovely countryside. I presume there was a nice Shiraz to have with the lamb!! Does the bike have regenerative braking when you go down a steep hill? I know it’s pretty flat where you are, but just thinking about other places in Oz where it is hilly.
@mongreldogproductions
@mongreldogproductions 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Scott, ‘regenerative braking’? I’m not that technical. The ‘motor’ stops assisting over 25 kph (Australian Standard for Ebikes here in Oz) and after that you are doing all the work yourself. When going downhill there is no resistance and I try and get a good run up for the hill ahead. Thanks for watching.

Great vid Steve. Ironically I just got myself an ebike. I’ve seen the trailer before, when you go riding with a mate who has bung joints and he rides an ebike. You usually go pedal power with him to level the playing field. What trailer are you using? You have mentioned it before, I just can’t remember in which vid. Single wheel, I assume gives less rolling resistance? I’m a bit like you, keep the pedal assist down low and put in some b.h.p of my own. Anyway great vid and inspirational. Firstly, I did the 2009 Busselton IM and seeing the aerial view of the jetty brought back some great memories! Secondly, having recently gone to an ebike but still continuing my passion for multi-day ebiking adventures, I'm curious as to how u plan each day so as to ensure u can recharge at the end. How long are your daily stages? I know the 1st day was 30 odd kms and your 2nd day was around 70kms. Would this be the maximum or do you try and go further on certain days depending on your destination? I know it depends on conditions eg head winds but what sort of distance can you get from a battery charge? And do u carry a spare battery as some bikers do? Also, do you usually stay overnight in caravan parks for the power supply to recharge? Or do you use other options like Warm Showers (I see u stayed overnight at a farm stay. Was that an Air BNB?) or youth hostels etc? I live on the east coast of Oz and am contemplating some ebike adventures soon. TIA. I enjoyed your video, stay safe on our Australian roads!!
@mongreldogproductions
@mongreldogproductions Жыл бұрын
Each day was planned to ensure I could charge at the end of that day. If the terrain was hilly or steep (rolling country) then I would reduce the distance accordingly. I usually start on a low power setting (the bike has 5) and as the day progresses, if the battery has heaps of charge, then I let the bike do more of the work later in the day. There is no sense finishing the day with a half charged battery…might as well use all (or most) of what you got. At a pinch, while your having lunch, ask the place you’re eating at to top up the battery while you are there. It could mean the difference to having to pedal under your own steam. I use caravan parks or any other option as long as I’ve got access to power at the end of the day. A spare battery is an option, but not one that I’ve considered. A second battery for that bike costs $1,400. Good luck with your adventures.

Hi JZ somehow, I managed to cross the terminals over and shorted out the battery. It shouldn’t have been possible but under all the wrong circumstances it is doable. The only fix was to replace the battery on return, $1,400AUD. Expensive mistake. Glad you enjoyed the journey.

Hi Steve, I came back to this video as I've gone ebike now after many yes, no, yes, no's. I was curious about the shorted battery situation. Was that user error or something else? I also worried about range anxiety but my local dealer has hire batteries for the more adventurous. A young guy with forward thinking. As for the bike I ride more than ever and use it for groceries, market runs and even fishing since I can ride to the perfect fishing spot. Thanks for posting your adventures.

@mongreldogproductions Жыл бұрын
Hi Richard, I think i would have to admit that it was User Error although... In my defence, it wasn't completely fool proof. The charger and cable are 'keyed' to only fit one way (supposedly) but if given poor lighting, not wearing your glasses and a bit of fatigue thrown in for good measure, then it was possible to short it out. Hire batteries sounds like a great initiative. Where are you located (State of City)? Glad you enjoy the Channel content. NB...I'm thinking of cycle touring the Philippines in Jan/Feb 2023 but that will be on my conventional bike with trailer.

@@richardharker2775 The reason I asked where you were is that E Bike batteries can not be carried on Aircraft (too big) and so any overseas touring has to be on conventional bikes. I've looked at hiring e bikes overseas but with language barriers (last time was Taiwan) it can get a little overwhelming. See you on the other side.

Hi there, I really enjoy your videos. Having watched this one to Augusta I've decided to do it myself. I'm 74 & on the heavy side of 100kg. I have been riding a bike on and off for 20 yrs but not regularly until I bought a NCM + fat tyre Ebike early last year. I intend to ride some of the Munda Biddi having done Mundering to Carinyah, the KEP track to Northam & the Heritage Trail several times, that's it so far. I'm thinking of getting a trailer but can't decide between a single wheel like yours or a two wheeler. My initial thoughts on the single is no because I think it would affect my bikes balance. The unloaded weight of the bike is 40kg & I've fallen off several times because when it gets away from me there's no stopping it. I'd be interested in your thoughts. Cheers

Hi Bob, I've had no experience with two-wheeled trailers. The only disadvantage I see with a two-wheeler is that it will limit you as far as where you can go. The Munda Biddi for example has a lot of single track and switchbacks...not suitable for a two-wheeled trailer in my opinion. I'm happy to loan you my BOB Ibex trailer to see if it suits your needs.😀

I'm guessing the battery isn't that big and the trailer is taking a bit of pulling as I regularly mountain bike 70km in the UK with at least 1000m climbing and come back with 15-20% battery left. Mines a Bosch system with 625 battery.

Hi mate, it’s a Giant Fathom E Pro with a 500 amp hour battery. The trailer weighed about 25-28 kg and does provide a bit of resistance. It is still easier than conventional touring which I’ve done previously. I’m getting a bit long in the tooth to consider elevations of 1,000m (although the Ebike would certainly help). Thanks for watching.

@@mongreldogproductions I think you have your battery spec wrong. A 500 ah battery would be massive. Perhaps 500 Wh maybe. It would be an interesting exercise to test what effect the loaded bike trailer has on the range. Could ebike touring become a "thing"?

@@livewire.. you’re probably right about the wh/ah. Ebike touring is very popular in Europe where distances aren’t extensive (between charges) and the cycle network is extensive. G’day Steve, are you using the paid version of relive or just sticking with the free option? What sort of e-bike mate? Hi CH, the freebie option of Relive…it meets my needs. The bike is a Giant Fathom E Pro. As far as the stigma is concerned I think I’ve earned some respite from the haters and my attitude is that I don’t have to prove a thing. If they think that I’m ‘soft’ for riding an Ebike then let them think that. I did enjoy the benefits of the Ebike on this trip and it makes towing the trailer a breeze. It will be short lived…I’m sure I’ll be back on the ‘ol 24 speed conventional bike for the next trip. Thanks for watching.

I used to do 100-140k a day with panniers loaded up. Ebike, two batteries, I can do 100k in 2.5 hours with the panniers loaded up. It makes a huge difference when you have seen enough red dirt and low bushes to last several lifetimes. Downside is weight and cost of the batteries. Basic formula is volts x amps /10, e.g. 48v x 16 amps gives you about 76k worst case scenario. Instead of averaging about 22kph the battery ups that to max of 60kph but I sit on about 35. One thing I have found is that for the battery to do its job into a head wind, you have to crank the speed up to match the wind speed. If the wind is 40 and you sit on 20, the battery will drain faster than if the wind is 40 and you sit on 40. If the battery is making 20kph and you are pedalling to up that to 40, youre on a hiding to nothing. Better to have the battery do 40 and pedal to get the bike to 50. Good hard pumped up tyres makes a huge difference, as does the road surface. Flat tyres cost you 20% range. Smooth roads add 10-20% to range. My bike, panniers and batteries weigh close to 100kg before I get on it.

This bike (Giant Fathom Pro) cuts out at 20kph. I thought that was an Australian Standard. My guess is (and you have a much greater understanding of the technical bits then I ever will) that you’ve modified or built your Tourer from the ground up. Impressive figures that you have traveled daily…I am getting old and plan to tour Phillipines early next year on a conventional bike with trailer. I’ll have to stick to the coast cause the hills inland would probably kill me lol. Thanks for commenting.

@@mongreldogproductions Most controllers will have a setting somewhere that allows you to crank up the max speed as they are sold worldwide and most countries do not have 20/25kph max limits. Yes I built mine and I am an idiot anyone can do it its just join the dots. I found Leafbike is the best to buy a kit from, Chinese Co but very good after sales service, Peter is the man there. Good luck with the Philippines, lovely people there, I reckon you would have spent a lot of time in the tropics in your working days, will bring back memories of blood sweat and tears. Theres nothing wrong with throwing the bike in the back of a truck and cheating, in fact its compulsory. Cant wait to see the vids of your travels Dig.

For such travel you need stronger ebike and fat tyre is the prefered option with hub motors. Eunorau Defender S has two motors use only one on flat and must have two batteries 35Ah, what will make bateries to last for your life. Excellent rolling better than mid drive 1000W with 2.5" tyres? Hub motors 750W are excellent , with one motor keeps efficiency on low power ( not possible with 1000W plus motors) with two uphill no slow down switch on both motors , fat tyres low pressure 10 to 20psi makes huge difference on rough sealed roads and misaligned footpats, plus full suspension when you compare with 40plus psi on 2.5" tyres. Fat low pressure tyre means less chance of puncture. With 2 bateries 100 to 150km. With ebike you select mode and gear which suits your condition so you do exercise continuosly, normally I ride pedalling faster and coasting the most speed 25 to 30km/h in clear areas, over 30km/s becomes too noisy and windy so normal range 15 to 35km/h pass1 gives easy ride 20 to 30km/h if you want keep avg 30km/h move to pass2 and go up to 35km/h. Pass 4 and 5 practically not used for hills pass 1,2 and switch both motors on hills and keep the speed without loosing any time. If you use pass4,5 use for short time voltage sag and losses in batteries heatsup specially on longer hills. On single battery do not use at all or limit current to 20A 1000W. The second and third batteries can go at rea rack to reduce the weight at the front. You can select smaller 15Ah bateries will do good too , 17.5Ah you have to fully push up 2nd battery external to be able rear suspension operate normally or mount on rear rack.
And The Winner Is...
