Come and join ol’ mate as he cycle tours the 900 km off road Mason Trail stretching from Blinman in the Flinders Ranges to Adelaide, the Capital City of South Australia. This trip has it all…suspense, drama, heartache, misery and most of all; a sense of achievement.
In this vid, ol’ mate inches closer and closer to the finish line but every day there seems to be a curve ball outta left field. He is now ahead of schedule and just as well because he continues to confront challenges as the Mawson Trail snakes it way southward. By days end, it looks like ol’ mate might end up sleeping rough with nowhere to go.
Grab ya gear; Lets go!

hahaha this is amazing. Ive been watching the entire series and a subscriber for about 18 months. And then you roll into the town i live in, lobethal. And then you roll upon the lass awaiting an ambulance outside the bakery. And it clicks. I was there watching the same thing unfold. And theres my truck in the back of the Carpark with me in it having a roll for early lunch. I hazard a guess you wouldve been perfectly safe throwing up your swag tent whatever right where you were next to that powerpoint. Its the Polocross facility and only gets used 3/4 times a year. And certainly not on a weekday. Interested to see where you sheltered up and hid.

We were riding down in Maclaren vale we found ourselves in a similar situation at the end of a no thru road but we could see that we were only 400m from being on the main track where we wanted to be. We knocked on the house door and the lady of the estate was so lovely and was happy for us to go cross country across her property. I think we made her day!

That's the way to do it! A sprung 2-wheel trailer with the cargo stored below (weight stability) and a big flat solar panel up top. If you plan for overcapacity (like the the youtuber "Far Beyond Ordinary") you have motive power even on cloudy days.

BMW Assist let me down...they rejected my claim and refused to move the Bike. My Insurance company came good and got the bike back to Perth and repaired but it took a total of 4 months. Parts were ex-Germany. Apparently, nobody breaks the Paralever Torque Rod except me. I claimed compensation from BMW Assist for out-of-pocket expenses and the $500 Excess on the Insurance and they acknowledged (after investigation) that they f***ed up and it was not in keeping with their ethos. We agreed on a settlement. Allianze are the Underwriters for BMW Assist.

All those towns are familiar to me from the olden days and little has changed. A few things to take away from this video Steve. Cycling long distance keeps the mind very active, more than you would calculate which is why it is one of only a few sports/activities where you see older riders physically and mentally active. When you also talk of the tough days, yes they were. No medical services and very little any services really. The cemetery visit reminded me of a childrens cemetery called Pennyweight Flat near Castlemaine, Victoria. I was living near there when a good hearted journalist did a story about the 200 odd children that died in a matter of months in the gold rush days due to an epidemic. Most of the headstones were hand chiseled by the miners but during the next two weeks after the story, nearly half of the headstones were stolen. No idea why. Because of that locals feined any knowledge of a welsh mining village left mostly intact. And those stone walls. Could you imagine constructing them. Phew! Memories. Thank you for sharing your travel and narrative. Really, really appreciate it.

Some years ago I was working in Launceston. Laid up in my hotel room crook one day, the housemaids went about their work, chatting away. Picking up on an obvious UK regional accent, I asked how long they had been in Tasmania, "we're not from the mainland" they replied. What I was actually hearing was the Cornish accent their mining forebears had brought to Northern Tasmania several generations before.

Your comment on the Cornish miners is interesting. They were also brought out to places like Bendigo during the gold rush because once they got down very deep only the Cornish tin miners had the skill of managing water and airflow at those depths. Sadly in Australia you can only run a 250watt motor, but most of us run 750watt motors and they are more than enough to do anything you want, as for drag when the motor is off, with mid drive motor, you get no drag at all, but if you use a hub motor, you may feel abit of drag due to the motor being g on the wheel and you have to use your legs to spin it up, as for batteries, we use 20ah triangle battery, yes they are heavy, but if you don't peddle at all you can travel 50km, if you use peddle assist level 1 and you peddle to help the motor, you can get about 250km to a charge, what you will find d is that at first you use peddle assist alot till your legs start to get stronger, then you will find that you only start to use it when you are going up hills or you have a heavy bike full of camping g gear

@rickute1458
@rickute1458 6 ай бұрын
@johnjohn7407 you are more than welcome to ask 1 million questions, I am more than happy to answer all of them, in regards to wet weather, it is never a problem, we both have ridden is the pouring rain and all is well, the only thing I would say is if you do water crossing, like deep ones, the water will get into the motor causing big problems !
@rickute1458
@rickute1458 6 ай бұрын
@johnjohn7407 also I have a cargo bike with a hub motor and if you do deep water crossing it that the water will get into the motor as well, that bike has a 12ha battery and I do not peddle I get only about 20km to a charge, but if I peddle as well helping the battery, I get around 70km to a charge, the day that my hub motor on my cargo bike finally dies I will rip out the hub motor wheel and use a normal wheel and I will get another mid drive motor set up as the hub motor only helps to 25kph and then stops helping, the mid drive conversion kit, let you use all of the gear range and in 7th gear with peddle assist level 9 I can fly along at a massive 60kph and I am a 150kg rider ! Mid drive moters are more efficient because you can use your full range of gears on your bike.

I bought the trailer (BOB Ibex) in 2003. It was bloody expensive back then (Aussie dollar was only worth about 0.56USD) and is no longer in production. There are some on the second hand market and there are plenty of cheap knock offs but the build quality is sometimes a bit dodgy.
