On this episode of Transit Tangents we talk with Kelsey Huse, a resident of Austin, TX who is very active in the urbanism and transit activism community. She is an organizer with Rethink 35 (Links below) and creates related content for TikTok and X.
Kelsey bought an e-bike in 2023, and like many folks we talk to, it changed her life! In this conversation we discuss her shift from using public transit in Austin, to now primarily using an e-bike to get around. We also learn her "origin story" into transit activism with a campaign to save a bike lane, and more!

I remember back in the 90s it was faster to bike 30 minutes rather than wait for the next bus and pray the bus doesn't miss the next bus depot sync time. Hell I remember bicycling faster than the bus by going all out, and once I passed the bus I stopped at the next bus stop to take a break by hopping on the bus I just passed. I did all this on a regular bike. An electric bike would have decimated the bus.

I'm from the Philly area and became interested in Urbanism only after I had to move to SWFL. They don't even have passenger rail down here!

When most cyclists treat occupied crosswalks with the same respect they demand of bike lanes, that's when the average voter wants to vote for better bike infrastructure. There is a decent amount of a lawless culture on bikes, partially from infrastructure planners often being seemingly unsure of if bikes are pedestrians or cars, because we seem to be expected to be exactly both but somewhat rarely where we actually are in between.

@dukeloo The police are supposed to take care of that. The police are supposed to enforce bike laws to, but at the end of the day, the government refuses to believe that bikes aren't pedestrians.

@dukeloo That's what cops are for. Cops should also be ticketing/arresting people on bikes for dangerous/illegal behavior, but it's easier on both cops and cyclists when municipalities consider bikes to just be pedestrian-ish

Nah all states need to just adopt the Idaho stop and move on with their lives -sincerely a former Idaho resident
