It's positive. Telling someone who is taking a dive, to hang onto the living thing that is her love for them 'cause it's a terrible thing to lose.

I always thought it was about love. That love is a living thing and it’s a “terrible thing to lose.” Such a great song. Those violins get me every time.

A great band from my high school days. They bring back memories. All real good ones and good people.

The band’s lead singer and prominent songwriter, Jeff Lynne said, “I was even asked once if it was about a whale, Christ knows where that came from. It was just a song about nothing more than lost love….the words just rhymed, that all.”

I love this song. It's a good one to play when you're down.

In my own opinion, I think it's about love. Love is truly a Living Thing. It's like a Garden, you have to work hard to keep it alive and thriving, if you don't, it will wither and die, just like anything else that is alive, and that's a terrible thing to lose! Once it's too late and you've realized that love is gone and you've neglected that garden until it's too late to bring it back to life, what a dive you'll take!

This is my fave ELO song out of many that I love, this one featured at the end of Boogie Nights when he got his big old member out 🥖

I remember hearing this blasting out of some old Klipsch house speakers when it came out. Takes me back.

I don’t know what it was, but when I was nine years old and heard this song on my transistor radio, the violin melody used to scare me. I’m glad I got over my fear, I have loved ELO ever since!

It's about loss of love. I highly doubt Jeff Lynne and ELO had a public statement about such a highly politicized and controversial topic, especially in 1976's pop rock scene. They weren't that kind of band.

Seen them twice, from my home town of Birmingham, ticket to the moon, E. L. O classic.

Heard this back in Late 1976-early 77, and fell in love with it. This song, and Manfred Mann's cover of "Blinded By The Light" were my faves at the time.

ELO's music is so fucking good that you can't explain it with words. They are in a level of their own. And so MANY great tunes...u'd need a discography just for all the hits.

Jeff Lynne explained many times that the song is about loss of love. He let it slip out that it was about a bout with food poisoning that he battled while on holiday in Spain.

I saw ELO at the Montreal Forum in 1976, and this was the encore song. They had 3 cellists on stage, plus the full band and a whole lot of lasers. This song is forever burned in my memory!

Very simple, love is a living thing. Thats it. I've been an ELO fan since I first heard Mr. Blue Sky. Jeff Lynne didnt hide what he was writing very often. The majority of his songs were up front and to the point lyrically. What you heard was what it was meant to be. He wrote songs and produced for many people, including Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, and George Harrison. Actually formed a "Supergroup" with them on Harrisons suggestion. ELO were such a Big und the seventies and 80‘ here in Europe. So great Albums so many good Songs. Lots of Memories. And he Produced so many Great Albums for others. Roy Orbison, Traveling Wilburys, Xanadu, Tom Petty, The Beatles, George Harrison, Bryan Adams.

Luckily got to see ELO live at Wembley Stadium London 3 years ago and was amazing the best concert I've ever seen

E.L.O always takes me back to childhood. I’m 29 and the best years of my life are the ones where it was only me and my mom, from about ‘94-‘00 in San Pedro. Anyway there was the best classic rock station in California, ARROW93.1, it mostly played tunes from the 60s and 70s but once in a while would play 80s rock, and E.L.O were one of our favorites...Sadly ARROW died one day...no joke, one day ARROW93.1 is on and my mom and I go to lunch and when we came back to the car turned on the radio and instead of music on ARROW was a steady heartbeat.

This song is so BADASS. It's a shame ELO is so underrated. The Electric Light Orchestra is truly LEGEND.
