A really exciting new arrival (along with the Expert Senior in recent videos)! Circa 1928. Beautiful cabinet by Darrieulat.
Apologies for slight overload on the audio during the record: Ginette Neveu, violin: Piece en Forme de Habanera (Ravel). La Voix de son Maitre (French HMV) DA 1871, issued in 1947. Burmese Colour Needle (thorn).

My! That is one BEAUTIFUL Machine! What Bass! This sounds absolutely AMAZING - even with its hard Gaskets! Would love to hear it after it had been restored. I’m both intrigued and most envious of all those Records you have stacked there! I would be in absolute HEAVEN playing and going through all of those! 🙂 Thanks so much for sharing.

Thanks for the comment! There are a few other videos of it on my channel (after the soundbox was overhauled). Frankly all those 78s were overwhelming! I went through them many times and kept a lot of great stuff, then recently passed them on to a collector friend who has found lots of great stuff too. Everybody happy! 😊

Many congratulations again Andy and it is wonderful to see this extremely rare EMG Mk VII gramophone in your capable, loving and appreciative hands. Certainly the chance of a lifetime. What a joy forever to be the custodian of such a high quality instrument. The superb condition is really quite amazing after 91 years and clearly previous owners have taken great care of their charge as demanded by the creators and designers. What a treat to hear an oh-so-rare long-bar soundbox which, even with semi-hardened gaskets, overflows with audio quality and character---perfectly matched to the acoustic system. The motor too seems to be in very good order judging by the pitch stability. Violins quickly find errors and fluctuations don't they ?! Ginette, Neveu, as ever, gives a superb performance which is a privilege to listen to---well chosen indeed ! Very many thanks for sharing this most exciting moment of history.

Thanks so much for your hearty appreciation Graham! My great pleasure at being able to take this wonderful Mk VII into the fold continues to multiply. It really is a marvel. What an incredibly clever and talented chap Balfour Davey, who seems to have been the chief designer, must have been.

That is stunning. Almost sheer perfection with such simple yet elegant lines. No words needed regarding the sound quality considering the original condition of the gramophone. Thanks for sharing the video.

My pleasure, and many thanks. I agree! EMG advertised it as "the connoisseur's gramophone" in 1928 and it really does fulfill that description.

No other gramophone than EMG can produce such a tender tone.

I never knew such a thing existed. The very definition of audiophile equipment in its time. The music is exquisite.

Thanks for the comment Charles! I'd never have known myself if I hadn't got into the world of EMGs and all the kindly people and enthusiasm that surrounds them - and the fantastic book by Frank James.

Thanks Alex! It really is, it just oozes quality. It seems to me to have something of a mysterious quality too, so I chose a record to suit! I'm really looking forward to setting to and overhauling the soubdbox, but it will be some time before I can get round to that.

Ebonite, as in the material for bowling balls? That horn must be really heavy and non-resonant.
