An autumn-leaves walk along the Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway's Victoria Subdivision, between Mile 135.75 and 137.70.
This is between Royston and south Courtenay, on Vancouver Island.
No trains here since 2013 or 2014. This railway is owned by the Island Corridor Foundation (ICF) and the operator is Southern Railway of Vancouver Island (SVI). The railway was previously owned and operated by Canadian Pacific (CP). The railway's history is represented by the Canadian Railroad Historical Association (CRHA) E&N Division.
Along the way I see two old spurs leading to former pole-yard customers (Island Pole and Chinook Forest Products), as well as an old logging and mining railway grade that used to interchange with the E&N.
Seen by me on October 24, 2020.

I like the new format where you show where everything is. Good job!

Thanks Matthew. I think it's easier to understand where a location is, and it allows me to better explain the history of something. It is fun editing.

This is my favourite video thus far Mike. Those hidden spurs are magical and mysterious - I love them! It is a shame that the train isn't running. Just think of the possibilities.

Thanks Jaylien :) The freight possibilities are many, and it was sad to see the working pole-yard without any rail service.

I found the foundation to the water tank a while ago it was only a few feet from the Royston Rd crossing.

Thanks Aidan. I will look for that next time. I'm also curious if the Royston siding was on the ocean side of the railway, or the mountain side.

The Trent river trestle were the trestle collapsed. The conductor and the engineer heard a thunderous crack and instantly they both knew what they had to do. They both jumped of the train and at perfect timing they landed just barely before the ravine dropping down to the river they both looked over the edge in terror as the train along with the trestle went crashing into the river below. But obviously jumping out of a fast moving object comes with consequence they both had a couple injuries. Don’t judge me if I’m wrong it’s been a while since I’ve read about it.

This was on the mining railway, in 1898. (The E&N railway line wasn't built until 1914) I think I read somewhere that the collapsed mining railway trestle was further upstream from where the current E&N trestle is. Here's a webpage that I found about it: sites.rootsweb.com/~bcvancou/places/trent.htm

Ah, you're in my neck of the woods this time. And I never even knew those spurs existed. And just what is a pole yard?
@LowLightMike
@LowLightMike 3 жыл бұрын
A pole yard is a business that makes tall wooden poles (like for utility lines). Long, straight logs are the raw material.

I love this. Very good scouting! Does anyone know why some switch stands have a yellow flag and some have a red one? Thanks

It’s been almost a decade and they still haven’t fix the tracks. I know it’s because of lack of funds but this is ridiculous. It’s very unlikely now

For sure. The weeds and trees grow fast. Soon it is out of sight.
