Varanasi, teaming with musical luminaries such as the eminent tabla maestro Pt. Kishan Maharaj, the Thumri Queen Smt. Girija Devi, and the legendary Ustad Bismilla Khan, played a pivotal role in shaping RonuJi’s early musical influences.
Growing up in a disciplined manner, Pandit Ronu Majumdar diligently followed the Guru-Shishya tradition, visiting his mentor’s house for lessons. His unwavering dedication, commitment, and focus bore fruit, helping him overcome the challenges of a challenging life.
PanditJi emerged as a trendsetter and style influencer, contributing significantly to the global popularity of the flute during his era. His remarkable journey is marked by numerous accolades, starting with the All-India Radio Award, Aditya Vikram Birla Award (1999), Sangeet Natak Academy Award (2014), Lifetime Achievement Award by Navbharat Times, National Kumar Gandharva Award (2006), and Pandit Jasraj Gaurav Puraskar (2008), presented by the Honourable Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri. D Burman, Vishal Bhardwaj, Baaba Maal, Asha Bhosle, and Khayyam, he has left an indelible mark on the industry. Noteworthy is his contribution to Pt. Ravi Shankar Ji’s album ‘Chants of India’ and his participation in the merchant ivory film ‘In Custody’ (1994), alongside Zakir Hussain and Ustad Sultan Khan.

Both are so great. Remember 1983 Sawai Gandharva, Shahidji was sitting on the stage with folded hands,as Ustad Vilayat Khan Sahab was performing Raga Abhogi. Pt Shamta Prasad on tabla. It was so mesmerising,as if some one is actually singing. Today, Shahidji reminds me of Ustad Vilayat Khan Sahab. To be frank, sometimes,I feel ,is it Ustadji or Kishoriji performing? Both, my weakest points. May the Almighty bless our music. Yes, I feel extremely happy to hear our youngsters, sure, they will make sure….

This jugalbandi would have been better if the two instruments had combined to compliment each other from the very beginning, instead of the Sitar taking minutes on its own, and the flute waiting without any contributions and then vice versa.
