I was eleven the year E.T. came out. This movie was a joy to see on the big screen. But my first time watching it was not at any old ordinary theater. My first time seeing E.T. was at a drive-in theater. It was so much more magical and special watching it under the stars. It was the perfect way for the 11-year-old me to watch it. That is one of my most cherished memories.

Spielberg said that little Drew Barrymore was convinced E.T. was real on the set. So her emotions interacting with him were genuine. This movie takes you on a journey of emotions like you said. It was very entertaining watching the two of you react to this for the first time. It won’t be the last time you see it I guarantee. It’s one of those iconic movies you watch again and again.

ET is actually a film about divorce. Spielberg's own parents divorced when he was young, and he put a lot of personal experiences into the film. He also has always been interested in UFOs and Aliens. So there are a lot of personal touches to the film, which is why his films, especially early films stand out so much. Even a film he only helped with the screenplay, such as Poltergeist, has personal moments sprinkled within it. Which ET was filmed the same time Poltergeist was, and both films are 1982 releases. 1982 is probably the most insane years for film. Tons and tons of highly acclaimed and popular films released then. If you made a list of films to see, solely based around a 1982 release, you would react to some of the most popular films in cinema.

My 12yr old self saw this in the theater when it came out, and cried my eyes out. My 54yr old self still cries when I watch this movie.

Next logical step : Spielberg's Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, then The Fifth Element. Those aren't as scary as Alien.

I find it so heartwarming that Drew Barrymore thought ET was alive. "We found Drew over there just talking away to E.T. and so we let director Steven Spielberg know," said actress Dee Wallace. "And so Steven, from that time on, appointed two guys to keep E.T. alive so whenever Drew came over to talk to him, he could react to her." Keeping the magic alive! I think Drew Barrymore had a great child performance 2 years later as a lead in the Stephen King adaptation of Firestarter (1984).

This film actually led to a fight between makeup artist Rick Baker and Spielberg. At the time, Baker was working on the aliens for NIGHT SKIES (Spielberg's alien horror film) and John Landis' wolf effects for AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON at the same time. When Spielberg changed directions to make E.T., Baker said it was not possible to literally design and execute new aliens for E.T, so fast. The two argued so heatedly that once their meeting was over, Baker told his entire team to exit the building and bring all their work (convinced Spielberg would throw everything out). Spielberg replaced Baker on ET with Carlos Corodini (who had done the alien creatures for CLOSE ENCOUNTERS), and Baker ended up winning the first Oscar for Best Makeup. A few years later, director William Dear wanted Baker to create his Bigfoot character for HARRY AND THE HENDERSONS, but because the movie was being produced by Spielberg, Baker was convinced Spielberg would veto him. However, Spielberg agreed Baker was the best man for the job, and the two reconciled their issues. Baker would win his second Oscar for HARRY and worked on other Spielberg projects including GREMLINS 2 and the MEN IN BLACK films.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind is another Spielberg must-watch! Very different in tone from E.T., but it's still an amazing movie even today.

I can't believe it's already been almost two years since I saw E.T. on the big screen for its 40th anniversary and before that I saw E.T. in 2017 for its 35th anniversary. Patricia Anderson Welsh was the voice of ET and she was actually in the film as a trick or treater dressed as a nurse lady with the dog.

Back in '82/83 I was scared, as a 5 year old. Refused to watch it for the rest of my childhood. Another TV screening in 1988 - I fled upstairs, because I couldn't take it. Such was the power of this. Not because I was scared, just the emotional horror. I can watch it now, as a 45 year old, with the Blu-ray - and the emotional horror is still there. John William's score is utterly amazing.

Theres a reason why ET went for Yoda at Halloween- His species can be seen on Coruscant in the republic representitive coloseum briefly in Star Wars Phantom Menace...so he recognised Yoda LOL

ET is not the only movie with a nice alien. Off the top of my head, you have flight of the navigator, Starman, the Day, the Earth stood still, the original, and the remake. autobots from transformers, Terranova, cocoon, the abyss, this is just some off the top of my head. If you actually spent some time and looked into it, you’d probably find many more.

Fun Fact: Those were real doctors and were unscripted. Steven Spielberg asked them to just do whatever they would do in that situation. Such a powerful scene!

I love that subtle little ET moment during the goodbye where he gets down to Drew’s size to not seem intimidating towards her and then back up to the older brother’s height because he’s taller. The sweetest alien of all time 🫶🏻

Peter Coyote, who plays the main scientist, actually auditioned for Indiana Jones during the making of RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, but he was so nervous, he literally broke a lamp just walking into the room. Spielberg said if RAIDERS had been a comedy, Coyote would've easily gotten the role. When he was casting ET, Spielberg was inspired by Coyote's failed INDY audition and brought him in to play the role to make the character less threatening.

I understand why Chandra would have been afraid of aliens and too spooked to watch this movie when she was younger. After Alien (1979) there was plenty of justification for one's trepidations about alien movies. I saw this movie with my mom when I was a teenager, originally thinking that my girlfriend wouldn't be interested in a movie about an alien. Two weeks later I took my girlfriend to see it. She cried her eyes out when E.T. "died", then punched me in the arm afterward for not telling her that he wasn't really dead.

He points to Elliot's head to say he'll be in his memory "I'll be right here." I like that he didn't point to his chest, it's more poignant and real the way they did it. The movie's sentimental but in a smart way. It deals with divorce, and loss and growing up. I often think that Spielberg forces sentimentality in his movies where it's not needed, but because E.T. is about childhood innocence it makes sense.

Another GREAT Steven Spielberg “Alien” movie is “Close Encounters of the Third Kind “ - being afraid of alien movies I assume you never watched it, but I highly recommend it. Late 1970’s but mind blowing effects!

At the time of the movie's release, this movie was a phenomenan in it's own right. The killer is that it was really a kid's movie, but it was the ADULTS who really reacted to it. One of my all time favorite films.

I probably saw E.T. on VHS at some point when I was a kid, but I actually don't remember when I saw it. I was born in late 1986 so I definitely didn't see it in theatres, and we never owned it on DVD, so it must've been on VHS in the early to mid '90s when I saw it. That manner of dissecting a frog was actually common at one time for 6th through 12th graders. The chloroform does not kill the frog, so its heart is still beating during the dissection. (The cruelty of which is probably why it was discontinued.) By the time I got to dissect a frog, I was in 10th grade and the frogs were dead and preserved in formaldehyde. My sister's class dissected small pigs.

The race of "E.T." is from the Star Wars Galaxy as seen in The Phantom Menace. E.T. recognizes Yoda on Earth and tries to run to him. How is it possible that there are pop culture Star Wars toys and costumes on Earth? The answer is simple, George Lucas is unknowingly a strong Force Sensitive and through the Force has had visions of the Star Wars Galaxy that he interpreted as inspiration and wrote it all down, including Jar Jar Binx.

Great Reaction! A fabulous movie about Aliens is ARRIVAL with Amy Adams. Written and directed by Denis Villeneuve who also did Dune and Bladerunner 2049. You won't be disappointed.

Back in the 80s, pizza was still mostly being made by Italian Americans in little family restaurants. And it was good. I never knew there was such a thing as substandard pizza until post-college. Believe it or not, some of the best pizza still around is in New Jersey. You have to know where to go, but you can still find the real deal.

You're right about most extra-terrestrials being portrayed as horror devices this was preceded by Splieberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) and Robert Wise's The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) which are the only two others off the top of my head that put ET's in a positive light.

Tbh E.T. traumatized me as a kid but when I rewatched this movie hundreds of times in middle school I lost my fear of E.T. and it became my favorite movie of all time.

There are dozens of films each year from 1940 to today that are 'good'. Don't let the fact that films are black and white prevent you from watching. Don't know what you like but a few of my early favorites are... 1951 Day the Earth Stood Still, 1956 Forbidden Planet, 1968 Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, 1968 Lion in Winter. I could go on and on. The ETs were botanist. They go from planet to planet collecting plant life. ET noticed Yoda and said home. No spoilers if you haven't seen the Star Wars movie, but ET and Star Wars are canonically in the same universe. ET and Poltergeist were filmed at the same time in the same neighborhood, so Spielberg was going back and forth between the two movies and all the kids from both movies played together every day.

E.T. is a great movie and holds a very special place in my heart. And so I was dismayed listening to some of Jordan’s jokes/comments throughout this reaction. Did not find them funny and thought they were more annoying than anything else. Please do better.
