Here it is, one of the biggest trad whippers you're ever likely to see, taken from our film 'Lexicon E11'. We were actually packing up and was about to head down. We'd gone back up to Pavey Ark to get some cutaways for Neil's first ascent which was already in the can, it'd been a day. We just nipped along the gully to have a natter with Dave Mac as the light turned a little dusky. But what was this?... Looks like Steve is getting on the lead, holy s**t, better get the camera out. Dave set his camera up on a wide lens setting, you could not conceive that the climber might fall out of that frame..... this is about as close as it gets.
Of course after this we raced back up to the top of the route to capture some of that special energy that was in the air. You'll have to watch the whole thing to see that and experience Steve and Neil's reaction; 'you can't say the lad didn't try'.

For real! I’d like to add my opinion, insisting it stems from nervous laughter. I don’t believe I was hearing Neil Gresham? Which says a lot! Just Steve and Dave, in a way like children getting away with almost throwing a ball through a window. Dave’s edit on his channel is quieter, with just the *phew! Followed by commentary saying he was “keen” not to take the same whip! I admire these climbers, what they’re about, and basically agree with you, friend.

I think the reason why SM swore is because, for once, this was not a staged fall. SM and others, have uploaded a fair few videos now, where they take huge falls, on hard trad routes but onto bomber gear. A really good example is Robbie Matheson taking a right flyer (~20+ metres) from near the top of Scarface (E6) on Wasdale Screes crag.

Curious as to why he fell so far? Looking at how far he was above the last piece of pro, I was surprised how far our man fell. It looks like a complex anchor set-up, but to my mind, he should have ended up around the level of the blue bag, and with rope stretch, maybe finish around where the ropes cross or just past that. It sounds like one piece of pro pulled, and even allowing for stretch, he very nearly cratered - I am wondering if his belayer was caught unawares and nearly dropped him?

How can a roe not snap and why he not linking in ever 4 5 feet or whatever
@DeShark88
@DeShark88 Жыл бұрын
The ropes stretch. They pretty much can't snap unless they're loaded over a sharp edge. They're made up of several strands that are twisted, called the 'core' of the rope, and then there's a braided sheath that is wrapped around the core to protect it from edges and the like. The reason he isn't linking in every 4 5 feet is that there's nothing to link to. The style of climbing he's doing (trad) frowns on making any permanent changes to nature, so it would be taboo to drill holes in the rock and fix metal gear, so he's reliant on jamming metal wedges into cracks. There were no cracks on the bit he was climbing, which is why this climb gets the grade it has - E stands for "Extreme" and increases in how extreme the danger is from E1 up through E2, E3, etc. This is at the high end of that grade because there's not many places to place protection, so the consequences of falling are likely to be significant.

One of the cases the belayer should run at the opposite direction if he has space? (given first anchors' pull strength).
@Consta76
@Consta76 Жыл бұрын
That would create a more static fall, slamming the climber into the wall. It was a perfectly soft catch.
@dannygrout92

@@Consta76if you climb in the UK you get used to running backwards to take in rope to stop your man hitting the ground. . . . . A hard catch is softer than being stopped by the ground . . . . .

@@dannygrout92 I've climbed in the UK and abroad for 30 years, and running while belaying is absolutely NOT the norm.
@nikfiot

@@weedaviecThis fall and this kind of climbing has nothing to do with normality! In many similar cases, "running" in the opposite direction is the only way to avoid falling to the ground... Belaying is a very responsible job... Maybe the climber here was lucky and stopped 3-4 meters before the ground, it seems that the belayer was not in control of the situation... As he said he was surprised! This fall should be shorter because it wasn't that much higher than the last piece. But okay.. They are professionals.. they probably know what they're doing..!

@davidpleydell3522
@davidpleydell3522 2 жыл бұрын
They don't have a death wish. They've each climbed thousands of bolted routes. But they return to head-pointing for a greater challenge and a more memorable experience. As for "smug"... they're just psyched up by an awesome climb, so no need to go hating on them.
@billr5842
@billr5842 2 жыл бұрын
I think some people are attracted to that type of climbing which is more mental. There are plenty of bolted routes to choose from thankfully and even gym climbing which is very nice too. Personally I think the vast majority of people take climbing way too seriously and there are far more important things in life than climbing a rock.
