Our self built shed made of our own sawmilled lumber is nearing completion as we work on the soffit, fascia, eaves and more. I also get into testing the limits of the RK24 tractor from Rural King with the grapple bucket from Titan Attachments. We use the simple Harbor Freight sawmill and I start thinking about my milling technique. Should I be quarter-sawing more often?

When flat sawing, 2 or 3 boards in the center of the log are always the same as quarter sawn, so save them for cabinets. That way you have the simplicity and economy of flat sawing without the headache and waste of quarter sawing. Still binging!

You should look into sealing both ends of logs with latex paint as soon as they are cut. You could build a solar kiln to control & accelerate the drying process of milled lumber.

Howdy "Virgina Pioneers " , Michael here for an update ! You both have gone from 👩‍🏫🧑‍🏫 to 👨‍🌾👩‍🌾 giving testimony to a dream that has come to fruition ! Sure there isn't Native American blood in your ancestry 🛶🪓🏹 ? Love the improvements and equipment upgrades. Great choice to get the skid steer. Used one when I worked on a golf course in the 80's. You both are quick learners . In my military enterence testing I scired highest in mechanical attitude so equipment operation comes natural to me. You both are doing good 👍 remembering "safey first because those toys can kill you ! Reminders and tips 👇 Composting : add some water a little 10-10-10 fertilizer as a catalyst and mix pile regularly. Wood ash from your 🔥 pit your brush burn pile and your wood burning stove you can spread on your garden when winter comes and plow under in the spring . A used disc and two bottom mold board plow is a good investment for preping your soil. Easier than a roto tiller. You are versed in conservation techniques relative to road construction. Contractors don't throw material away they only relocate said material as you do. Amen ! Your videos are your children's legacy growing up. God Bless and stay safe ! Peace and prayers always Michael

Thank you, Michael! Funny you should mention Native American ancestry, Jon has Kickapoo Cherrokee ancestry. Guess you could say these ways are in his blood. Glad you are enjoying and thanks for the tips. - Meg

Cupped or not, the shed is still looking awesome. As you have said before, now is the time to learn and work out the kinks before starting to build the house. Moving forward, a more quarter sawn slant would provide stability, but also pay attention to stacking, stickers, and dry time. In order to do more quarter-sawn, you may have to consider purchasing some larger saw logs if most of the trees on your place tend to be under 20". It would be wise to pick up a wood moisture meter. Also, it is a very good idea to seal the ends of the logs as moisture exits much faster on the ends and that is what causes the checking and cracks. The garden is looking good. You can purchase (or make) some stakes with wheels to put along the path to prevent the water hose from going all Godzilla on the baby plants. I hate when I look back and see that I have killed a nice plant when dragging the hose through the garden. Keep up the good work, take time for fun, and we'll be looking for the next video. RM

Thanks for the well thought out tips, Randall. Amateur question here, but what do you recommend as a sealer? I might give that a shot. As far as the garden goes, we're taking this year as a big experiment. See what grows well with our soil and region and then hone in our efforts on compost next year. So far so good though. Corn, melons, zucchini, cucumbers and much more look very happy.

@@WalnutsandWineberries Practically any type of primer that prevents moisture from escaping from the ends. Anchor end sealer does a good job but is a little pricey. Last year I moved a wood pile that had been decomposing for about ten years and I put the compost from the dirt underneath in our garden and it grew just about the best we ever had. It is a very good idea to find your county extension agent and get some soil sample bags. Send it in for analysis to determine the best fertilizer to add for amending the soil. It doesn’t cost much and it helps the plants a lot.

If you didn't do it put more monofilament on your garden fence about a foot apart to keep from the ground up to keep the deer out .Worked for me . But make a movable entrance for you to get in and out ... Oh I guess I should view the whole video before making a comment . LOL Just saw the fencing ....
