Here in Holland, the cheapest now is a '99 300.000km completely trashed M5, € 11.000. To get it driveble and pretty decent, you have to invest another € 10.000. The average e39 M5 is € 30.000 ($ 35.000). So $ 7000 for this car is DIRTLY cheap man.

Here in Chile a decent M5 is around $30.000 as well... about 3 times as much as a 540 and there are so few of them that is almost impossible to get one. Sadly we can't import used cars here :(

That's a pretty good deal! It's getting to the point where a higher mileage M5 can be had for decent 540i/6 money. The best part about a cheap, high-mileage M5 is that you can daily drive it in any weather without worrying about it.

Bernardo B your stupid that you paid that much for a 528i lol if milage is that low it's probs been sitting for a while and not being driven like it should. And anyway a 528 has no value in the first place with that kind of money you can buy nice E36 m3 or a 540i

I drive one. It is a great car. Rust is the issue with this car. Plus while it is running great now, there is a lot of paranoia involved in driving a high mileage M car, I have 2; 107000 miles on each. My position is 'they will break'. I try to control the agenda by being proactive. M5 - Magnificent highway car. Absolutely - King of the Road. A faster car is reflective of the driver not the car.
@E39Source
@E39Source 7 жыл бұрын
107,000 miles is nothing. Expect another 100k if you just remain proactive. They only break when neglected. And neglect includes ignoring brittle plastics and prompt replacement of consumables.

Gavin R I know, I keep an eye on the market, they mainly seem to be advertised on Carsales. But they don’t really sell at the prices being asked. The market here is quiet stale at the moment and it seems only true enthusiasts will be the ones making offers on E39 M5’s. I wouldn’t sell mine for less than $40k, it’s in excellent condition, much better than the one shown in this video, I am 2nd owner and it has 104000kms on it. So I do agree with what you are saying, but keep in mind they are only worth what someone is willing to pay for them. Cheers

What's the jacking points and cills like tho? Mine is a 99 car and I got it for £4.4k on 128k mile. Came with all 4 new CPS and a timing chain tensioner plus other bits. Has some rust patches on boot lid and over the rear bumper near the drivers side arch. Rear jacking points are just starting to go now too. Had it near 3 years. Also vanos are near silent and it uses no oil at all. Love the car. They are a great buy. Unfortunately here in the UK the prices are all over and most are well over priced.

@lepe55amg
@lepe55amg 7 жыл бұрын
I'd say that newer bmw's are less reliable and more expensive to maintain. Parts for E39's are easy to get. It's just a matter of getting one that has been well taken care of. I drive a 540 though, it has been a great car for the past 4 years and it hasn't gave me any major headache. M5 parts are probably 20% to 25% more expensive.
@E39Source
@E39Source 7 жыл бұрын
The E39 M5 is an incredibly reliable car. If general upkeep is completed, these things won't ever leave you stranded and will run forever. Parts are super expensive, but buying OE parts vs OEM parts saves a ton of money, as does doing your own labor.
@E39Source

M5 parts aren't much more expensive, but there are more of things. Two MAFs. 8 throttle bodies. etc. They need a LOT less maintenance than 540is though.

Thanks for the reply! There is a school of thought that in spite of BMW insisting on TWS ... that 5w40 is actually better for newer (tighter) engines. Rod knock in higher-mileage engines being the concern of course.

What is a DSP box? Also my center console area ash tray won't close by just pushing the lid forward (I have to push down the ash tray then close the lid) and was wondering if there is an easy fix you know of. I refer to the carpeted box in the roof of the trunk as the DSP box. It houses the two 5-6" subwoofers that the DSP sound package includes. I don't know why sometimes the ashtray needs to be pressed down to close that door. I've never dealt with it in any of the E39s I've worked on. My guess is that a part is missing or broken that holds the ashtray down once installed.

You would have to remove the center console and then that tray area to fix it I think. I have also never dealt with that issue though.

How much would it cost to get rid of all the rust the right way, and what would need to be done?
@E39Source
@E39Source 7 жыл бұрын
They'll sand out the rusty areas, fill or weld in new material, smooth, paint, clear, and polish. We get great rates from a local guy, so I'm thinking no more than $2,500 will remove all of Nick's rust.

l'm guessing closer to $3,000. just picked up an 528it with half as much rust as this and an estimate of $1,700. Although if you get good rates it will be less. Keep us posted when done. By the way what is the color?

Definitely! I got a 530i 2001 as a daily and paid just 3800€ for it. Very reliable and enough power although it had 143000 miles on when I bought it

The cheap M5s need attention, it's as simple as that. If you're handy and know how to get parts as cheap as possible, they can work out. Otherwise, I generally recommend people by a more put-together car at the $15k price range or so.

Get a pre purchase inspection and have over 2k ready to go just in case. That's how I am going to go about my BMW. You need big boy money to keep these cars perfect. This car is so beautiful because over 20k was put into it before he got it. 2k a year to keep your e39 perfect sounds chill. Happy hunting bro!!

You know, I should do a video on my 97 540ia. I got it recently for 500$. I’ve had to do the timing chain guides and all gaskets, and there is rust. But for around 1200$ total I have a nice fun car. I think I’ll do a video, there’s already one on my channel but I don’t think it’s E39 Source appropriate (sorry for my language) that video is when I first got the car. I think I’ll do a new video now though show everyone what you can get for a good deal!

i haven't driven my m5 in 2wks however I've turned the ignition on about every 4 days or so, and my battery light just came on. The car is running fine, the lights inside aren't dimming. should i let the car idle for awhile? thanks guys
@E39Source
@E39Source 7 жыл бұрын
The car needs to be driven. Give that a shot and see if things go back to normal. If not, you're probably going to need a new alternator.
@legendaryveg1270
@legendaryveg1270 7 жыл бұрын
i checked the voltage of my battery on the cluster and it showed 11.2V even after turning the engine on it stayed the same, will it charge up after driving it awhile. and what should the voltage be at? thank you
@E39Source
@E39Source 7 жыл бұрын
That sounds low. It should be around 13-14 volts. It sounds like your battery is beginning to fail or potentially the alternator. Drive the car for a while and see what happens. Also check the age of the battery. Places like AutoZone will do a free test on the battery too to see if it is making the proper voltage.
@legendaryveg1270
@legendaryveg1270 7 жыл бұрын
drove the car awhile it stayed around 11.2, is it possible to just charge the battery?
@E39Source
@E39Source 7 жыл бұрын
Not really. If it's not taking a charge from the alternator the battery is probably dying. If the battery is older than 3 years old, just replace it.
