This video shows you how to replace an ABS pump in an E90 BMW 335i. This would be the same for any E90 exc. AWD. I'll explain how to swap modules. Save money DIY it with a known good used ABS pump.

Great video. This worked perfectly for my 2010 335i E90. Bye bye nasty ABS warning lights. I was quoted $2500 to do this job from 2 shops so I decided to give it a go. The second hand unit cost me $125 and this whole job including bleeding too around 4 hours to complete. My additional tips are: (1) When removing the 3 nuts at around 7:50 on the video (dont drop these whatever you do) as I didn't have magnets I used some kitchen aluminium foil doubled over to wedge between the nut and my socket. This wedged the nut fairly securely into the socket recess so I could lift it out and later put it back in place on the bolt for tightening. (2) Second tip is that the 3 or 4 warning lights remained on after the replacement but they disappeared after driving the car for about 50 metres. I guess there is some kind of synchronisation process that requires motion and/or braking to get it started. Thank you Vehicular DIY. I owe you a few beers.

Great video. When I did mine I was too pissed that Bosch built such a piece of trash pump. I bought the whole assembly from BMW of Minn for 970 bucks. I replaced my pump and ABS module but swapped my electrical module. I then decided to fix the pump and sure enough the brushes were gummed up. Bosch never accounted for graphite material build up in the holders. Also removing the DC electrical motor once the tabs are dremeled off take some force because the motor magnets hold the the motor rotor to the housing quite well. I cut access slots in the electrical motor can to release inner tabs on the motor outer can to the bottom of the Bosch base. Once loose sure enough both brushes were gummed up but one was not making full contact on the slip ring thus the rpms for the motor could not be achieved causing the code. It was not that difficult to remove the motor can to access the motor internals and I did not break the internal tabs that hold the motor to the base (this is where the magnets hold the base to the motor housing well). Once reassembled I peened the aluminum housing to the motor base close to what the original connection was and used high strength epoxy to provide a 2nd level of security. At the time no one would reveal that other Bosch BMW ABS units would work and I didn't wish to take a change since the car would be down if I was wrong. If I had to do this over again I would either buy a used unit for cheap or just pull the motor and repair it. Excellent video and should help many BMW drivers to fix what Bosch screwed up. My confidence in Bosch is waning after rebuilding my alternator and finding Chinese bearings inside. Again a great contribution to helping DIY. FYI the dealerships are charging some poor owners up to 3K for this repair...

You not kidding. The dealer wanted $3K to put a new one in and told me you had to buy the module and pump together. My question is are the new pumps fixed or is the problem still there and eventually I'll get the same problem of gummed up brushes ?????? So far I've been driving with the problem and haven't fixed it.

This is awesome. Many thanks from Australia. The hardest part seems to be the brake bleeding so I'm thinking of replacing the pump and then taking my car to the shop around the corner for new brake pads, fluid and bleeding.

Great video, well explained. Sent my unit to be refurbished for £240 including VAT and has solved the issue. Taken off myself, refitted myself using this video and all went very well. Unit can be a tad tricky to take out and place back in due to the small enclosure. Did not need to recalibrate the unit, however power-bleeding the unit following installation seemed to drain battery significantly and as a result it brought about 5/6 new and insignificant error codes, plus the car on a lift image on the dash. ran the car a couple days and all seemed to be back to normal. Quick delete using DIV57 and all good. My recommendation would be to reduce the level of fluid within reservoir to below the level of the abs unit, then when disconnecting the rigid pipe lines minimal fluid should leak out. I learned the hard way! Thanks again, great video.

Sorry but just to add, great video! This video confirms how simple this job is. I'll be purchasing a 6 cylinder pump for e90 3 series and swapping the modules over like you did, so I'm hoping I don't need to code anything, as I too have the 335i. A reconditioned pump that matches my part number is £630 off ebay... I can get a 6 cylinder pump for £200. Only the 4 cylinder pumps are super cheap which is a shame!

Matty Bt Funnily enough I'm going to be doing this job from next week. I'm sending my existing pump and module off to a company that repair/refurb the part and send it back. It's what they specialise in. And it's cheaper than any six cylinder pump I've seen for sale. All the 4 cylinder pumps are cheap but no good for our cars.

@Vehicular DIY Questions: 1. Does my car not brake when i do not the bleed procedure? Is it dangerous to drive with that to the next workshop 15 miles away? I dont know how to do the bleed procedure with that kit. 2. How do i recalibrate my DSC module via INPA? Is this the step to eliminate those yellow lights? 3. Does a 4 cylinder abs pump of an E90/E87 work on my E90 325d 6 cylinder? (Looks the same) no active steering 4. I have to change my front and rear brakes completly as well as the brake liquid. So when the workshop is changing the brakes on my car they have to do a bleed procedure too right? So is the bleed procedure via INPA necessary? 5. sorry 4 my bad english thank you!

Hi, thanks for the video. Is it always necessary to calibrate the DSC unit if I'm just using INPA/DSC pump to bleed the brakes? Is it safe to always use INPA instead of a Motive bleeder pump to bleed (dealership-level bleeding) or would that damage my DSC unit and need calibration? I'm just looking to do my own brake fluid flush/bleeds, not swapping out any modules. Thanks!
@VehicularDIY
@VehicularDIY 6 жыл бұрын
No you should't need to calibrate the DSC just because you used the bleed procedure in INPA. It's safe to use INPA yeah, the pump can take it and no calibration isn't needed just be doing a rework. Just make sure you don't let the reservoir go dry and you'll be in good shape.

So I have Delphi system and WOW (haynes manual online) only! Do I need to bleed my brakes? And can this be done manually or do I have to use INPA?? Thanks!

+Shahbaz Manzoor Yes you will need to bleed the lines and you can not do it manually as you'll need to get the air out of the new ABS pump. You should be fine with just moving the module over, there should be no need to recalibrate your DCS.

Hello, thanks a lot for the great video. I have a 2010 325 that is having the same problem. I do not really see the DSC pump though, it seems to be much easier to find in the 335i. Do you happen to know where it is located in the 325? Thanks.

Aveman1, I was interested in doing this exact repair as I suspect the same discrepancy. Would you be able to say if I can any e90 DSC pump with another pump of e90, e92, 93 excluding AWD? Both exact same part number have to match or can we use different P/N? Is there an interchangeable part number list?
@VehicularDIY
@VehicularDIY 8 жыл бұрын
+Alex Arteaga As far as I can tell yes, as long as it's not AWD. All E90/E92/E93s non AWD models use an ATE MK70 pump. I went for the cheapest one I could find which was from an 06 325i and it worked perfectly. They are always the cheapest so might as well go for that.

Hey man I have an 08 335i. Rwd mechanics have told me my abs pump is shot that’s why I’m getting a grinding noise when i start my car. I had another mechanic tell me it was the Abs module and that it was going to cost me 3500. That’s BS in this video had you purchased and swapped over the black box what would that have cost you.
@VehicularDIY
@VehicularDIY 6 жыл бұрын
Your best bet would be to see if you can get the codes pulled from your current module. The modules don't usually fail (black box) it's typically the pump assembly. If i had to buy the entire thing used with the black control module it would have cost me max $350 as I would have isntalled it and encoded the module to the car using my laptop. No shop should be charging you more than $1500 even if it was all brand new. See if you can get the codes pulled so you can determine if it's the pump or the module.

If I bleed my brakes old fasion way with 2 people, surely it will be fine? As I don't have Inba and I need to do this as I have the ABS/DSC/Brake error
@VehicularDIY
@VehicularDIY 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, you need to bleed the air out of the pump. If you want to do it the old fashioned way you could manually bleed it then take it out on the road and hammer on the brakes to get the ABS to engage then go back and bleed out the air. This should move the air from the module into the lines and out when you bleed it the old fashioned way. But ideally you should setup inpa.

Aveman1 I'll look into getting Inba! It'll be more efficient and no doubt come in handy in the future. Thanks for the reply, keep the vids coming! I've almost convinced myself to keep my 335i since watching your vids

Vehicular DIY Well, it's better to stick with one from an e90 but it's harder to get for me. They are almost the same and the part number is very similar as well. In my case the problem I have is that my e90 has a 6789303 part number and most of the ones I've seen are form older models than 2010 and they sellers tell me that they won't fit because they are 67xxxx. However, the pump and electric motor should be the same. In the one that you used, was the part number very similar to the one you had originally in your 335? Thanks

what do you do when that used pump fails? just buy another from eBay?
@VehicularDIY
@VehicularDIY 7 жыл бұрын
Stephen Burns Yes I definitely would. So far almost 2 years later and 25k additional miles and it's still working. The trick is to get a 325i pump as they aren't breaking traction as much as a 335i. Therefore the pump is going to be in better shape
@stephenburns2081
@stephenburns2081 7 жыл бұрын
I have to disagree with the theory that breaking traction causes the pump brushes to seize. my 328i has been babied and I'm having this issue at 100k miles. maybe lack of use or just bad craftsmanship.
@VehicularDIY
@VehicularDIY 7 жыл бұрын
Stephen Burns whether the failure is due to the brushes wearing down from use or due to lack of lubrication or essentially a design flaw would be hard to call. The going rate for pumps originating from a 335i is higher. It could simply be because there are many more 325i/328is available to dismantle. So I recommend a 325i pump, there would be no logical reason to go for a 335i pump and pay more with the assumption that because its used more often the brushes are less likely to stick imo.

+Aveman1 I do have one question still. I took my car to an indy shop afterwards to have the brake fluid flushed. They used the pressure bleed technique. I told them that I had replaced the dsc pump, so they bled the dsc pump in addition to bleeding all 4 four brakes. Does that make sense? I did not actually see how they did this but I think they open the brake lines at the pump to bleed it....
@VehicularDIY
@VehicularDIY 8 жыл бұрын
+s2syed Well as long as you have a firm brake pedal you should be fine. Chances are they used their scanner to cycle the ABC pump as did in the video. If they cycled the pump with the scanner and opened at the pump it's kind of a ghetto way to do it but it works.

Hey Aveman. Have you ever seen error code 5E1D? I have it in german and it says that the chassis is invaled. However, after investigating the error code it is an internal error of the ECU which makes me beleive that the ECU is broken. I have already purchased an used dsc module from a 328i. Have you ever seen the code 5E1D? Thanks a lot!
@VehicularDIY
@VehicularDIY 6 жыл бұрын
That code does seem to correlate to a bad control module. Before ordering the 328i pump did you have it scanned?
@MCALL99
@MCALL99 6 жыл бұрын
Vehicular DIY Hey thanks for replying.No, I made a mistake and I have already ordered. I spent 180 dollars on it. I can still sell it though. I have checked the codes myself and the only code I get with Inpa is that code which I don't understand. I have also tested the pump with inpa and it works. The only issue I noticed is that voltage on ucc (-) is 9.9v and it's not normal. I also have problems loading dis/gt1 as it gives me low voltage error and I cannot diagnose. By looking at the code list 5e1d says it's an ECU internal error which leads me to believe it's the module which is screwed. I appreciate your help. I'm thinking of replacing the module and see if that solves the problem. Do you think it could be related to a voltage problem?

Hi Gabe, I knew because of the codes I was pulling up. I only needed to recalibrate because I messed around trying to diagnose it initially. If you just move the new motor over to your existing module and reinstall you should be able to get away with no calibration.
